I have a number of guns but iam looking for something new
maybe 17fireball or 240 WBY or something what do U shoot .

Coyote hunting means calling to me and I prefer my 220 Swift M77 (top rifle) for that application. I've shot a slew of them with it and never lost one. But I'll also shoot a coyote with anything that's handy.
I have a .204 Ruger, .218 Bee, .222Rem., and .22/250 that I hunt with but I've only killed a coyote with the .218 and 35 gr. v-max. It's a Ruger #1 and the more I shoot it, the more I like it.
I like this one for saving fur. It's a 17 Rem built on a Howa 1500. I don't have all the camo-tape on it in this photo, so you can see it.
Some others that I have that I've used for fur include a 22-250 on a Rem 722, 6mm TCU on a Sako, 204 Ruger on a Rem 700.
i really like my new haven model 70 classic fwt 25-06... it started as a 30-06 with a skanky barrel, and some workmanship issues...
i ordered a barrel from pac-nor, sent it to "redneck" for a few weeks, and it is a precision shooting machine with 75 gr vmaxes...
i have an H&R .222 that is a pretty fair little bolt gun, too... light and handy, for sure... shoots spooky accurate, too....
My coyote gun is a Interarms Mark X rebarreled to a 22-6mm Remington, with a thumbhole Bell & Carlson stock.
Remington 700 5R Milspec .308. Vx2-6-18 fine duplex with turrets.
MTH, I have shot several yotes with several different calibers and bullets. I'm still experimenting. However, I have not had anything kill them like my 223AI with 50gr Sierra #1330 bullets.. It is like flipping the light switch.. These bullets are fairly tough, they don't explode on grass.. In addition, they are fur friendly out of this round.. I know others milage varies and I know there are other good caliber/bullet combos out there.. I also know it takes several yotes with a caliber/bullet combo to form a steadfast opinion.. I have that with the combo I listed...
Remington 700 .17 Remington
CZ 527 American TAC .20
And haven't christened this one yet, but Kimber Montana .223
My two main yote rigs are a 6/06 and a 7 Mashburn Super. Next stop for me might be a T3 in 22/250 and or in 204. Guessing I may just lean towards the 204.
Dober
(side note, PDS that is a nice tang/Swift)
whatever I have in the truck at the time. Most of the time its a TC Encore in 204, but I've carried everything from 300 Win Mag down to a 17 Rem. They'll all work so I don't sweat the caliber much.
i just bought a browning abolt 243 wssm. Waiting for the scope to get here so I can give it a go on the yotes.
These are my primary 2: obviously dependent upon the time of day.
On Left a CZ .204 Rug and on Right a BDL in .17 Rem
the .17 Rem is the ULTIMATE fur friendly coyote round. You can quote me.
All Right!!!

Heres two...both .223s...

I have a 22-250 and a 243AI in Rem 700 mountain guides, they both shoot well and weigh 7#'s ready to hunt.
I also like AR-15's in 223/5.56.
Have used 204's, 17 Rem, 25-06, 223WSSM, and .222 REM. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few but they all work if you put them in the right situation with the right bullets.
If I had to choose just one, it'd be the 22-250 and I love AR's so that's saying a bunch.
don't forget the shotguns...
here's a couple pics of mine and victims that have fallen to it

MTHunter: I have killt Coyotes with both the calibers you inquire about - the 17 Remington Fireball and the 240 Weatherby!
I enjoy both calibers VERY much!
I have a fully custom 240 Weatherby built on a Winchester pre-64 Model 70 action - this Rifle has a heavy 27" Hart barrel and has a Leupold 6.5x20 variable scope affixed to it!
Its a Coyote killing machine "par excellence"!
Also with this Rifle Whitetail Deer, Antelope and Mule Deer begin trembling and hiding when I bring it out of the gun vault!
Its a dual purpose Rifle in other words - medium game and long range Varmints of any type.
I have been using my newish 17 Remington Fireball for the last 2 1/2 years now and am constantly impressed with this tiny cartridge being able to do so much in the Varminting arena!
I have owned a 17 MachIV custom Rifle since 1995 and many Coyotes, Badger, Prairie Dogs, Fox and Rock Chucks have been brought to bag with this "wildcat" twin of the 17 Remington Fireball.
Anymore though when push comes to shove I have been favoring one of my 5 Varminters in caliber 204 Ruger when the quarry is going to be Coyotes.
The list of virtues of this caliber on all manner of Varmints is simply to long to espouse by me right now (afternoon Goose Hunt coming up!)!
I say - 204 Ruger for the most part anymore!

Slider1: Great looking rig you have there!
I have a VTR (with brake) and I got's to know - where did the "brake" go on your Rifle?
Is that a Remington Model I have not seen afore?
Those Leupold 4.5x14's are wonderful scopes aren't they?
I have never had anything to do with that illuminated model you have but I am sure its a dandy as well, out in Coyote country, come dawn and dusk.

Mw406: Great photos of you, your quarry, your Rifles and Montana!
Thanks for sharing those!
I was a young man (I am 62 now) when I saw the owner of Goldbergs Fur Exchange in Seattle, Washington pay $200.00 APIECE for several "Montana White" Coyotes!
These were large white Coyotes from Montana that were predominantly white in color! Kind of like your Coyotes in pictures 1 and 2 of yours.
Its a shame that fur prices are down anymore!
What a "classey" Rifle (the 1899!) to Hunt Coyotes with in Big Sky Country!
Wishing you many more "fun" Hunts with the 250/3000!
Keep after'em - theres more out there!
That country you been Hunting sure looks like "my" little corner of Montana (Beaverhead County!)?

My 7-08 birthday coyote, 11-22-09.
What are yote hides worth nowadays?
This one started out as a Savage 12FV in .223 but was not the most plesent to pack in the field.
Converted to .223AI with a 22" sporter barrel. Now it is just about perfect for a calling setup.
I used a .22-250 for a long time with great success, but the .223AI is my new favorite.
What are yote hides worth nowadays?
With most buyers holding unsold goods from last year, not much if you can find a buyer. The better regions will stand a better chance but I might as well use an RPG here.
Been using a LH 223 AI for the last year or two. Run everything from 53 TSX to 75 Amax. All seem to work very well.
Seems to work well on jackrabbits also...
Think a Remingon R-15 or similar is in the works for tax return time.
VarmitGuy, I hunt coyotes primarily along the Musselshell from Ringling to Two Dot. I've done a fair bit of calling in your corner of the state from Dell to Monida. That used to be a great area for red fox. I haven't hunted there in quite a few years since the fox numbers took a nose dive. Have they come back? I do a fair amount of calling south of Miles City along the Tongue River. I've also hunted coyotes in the panhandle of Texas, western Colorado, and the east half of Wyoming. I do believe that central Montana is the best place I know for pale coyotes. Here's a couple more typical coyotes from around Ringling.
Beautiful coyotes and an exquisite old school rifle for the chore. Had a chance to get a some sort of special run straight grip 99 with an octagonal .250-3000 barrel a few years back at a pawn shop and foolishly passed.
Won't let that happen again.
Hey Dan how goes it?

stoeger double barrel 12ga winchester 3in copper-plated BBs,Y'all are talkin bout when they come in your front yard? right?
I use a Bushy Varminter most of the time especially on properties where shots will be 200yards or less. Usually mostly in the early season.
My backup is a Ruger M77 MKII heavy Target in 220 swift. Pretty heavy for a calling rifle but get a dog under 350yds it's a done deal. Normally use this later in the season when calling is more difficult.
I had a Ruger M77 MKII heavy Target in 220 swift sold it should not have done that it was a shooter . I replaced it with a old tang safty ruger it shoots great .
Well I just picked up a 17 FB to try CDL SF 24" now i have to get loading.
Thanks every one fun to see all your guns and story's
Mw406: The Fox did indeed get hit incredibly hard by the mange about 7 - 8 years ago!
They are just now coming back.
I mean they were WIPED OUT!
I went from seeing 6 to 10 a day to not seeing "A" Fox for 2 years!
I once had 3 Fox in my yard Hunting Nightcrawlers before the mange came!
Its still comparatively rare to see one but I do see one every week or so.
I quit Hunting them when they died off in hopes they WILL come back.
Now with the Wolves hereabouts (everywhere!) I don't know if the Fox can come back?
Lots of airplane shooting of Coyotes now as well as "snowmobile Coyote bowlers" (folks that run over the Coyotes on snowmobiles and then go back and shoot them with pistols!) and some trapping and snaring going on now as well.
These activities are especially prevalent from Dell to Monida!
WOW! That second photo with the free-standing 99 and the Coyote is just beautiful - outstanding!
Kudos again for that one!

SSCoyote/Steve;
You are giving me Colorado fever again with those pics. You get out after those pronghorns we saw on the ranch back in August?
I shot a coyote with my LaRue SS Friday before last after dropping two whitetail bucks with No. 1 .375 H&H earlier in the day. The dog ran off onto an unfriendly neighbor's property but he died.
Thinking about getting Connor a .223 or .223AI carbine barrel for his Contender.
MTHunter: I have not used one of the Coyote "Special" BDC scopes as yet.
I am sure they can be field tested to figure out exactly where the bullets WILL strike using the various circles and aim points!
I just tried to copy and paste a "picture" and the bullet impact points for both the 223 and the 22-250 but it would not transfer?
Here is the link to said "picture" from the Nikon Coyote Special online site!
http://www.nikonhunting.com/riflescopes-coyote-special-coyote-special-3-9x40-max-1.htmlI think I have one of the Nikon BDC "specials" on one of my rimfire Varmint Rifles.
Good luck if you decide to try one.

I haven't hunted Coyotes yet. My 8 year old son and I want to start hunting them this year. We have a Remington model 700 BDL 223 Rem. with a cheap Simmons 44 Mag. 3-10x44mm Scope.
I want to put a Leupold VX-II 6-18x40mm Adj. Obj Scope on it. I haven't switched scopes yet because it shoots so good the way it is...and I haven't have the extra $500 or so to spend on it.
It shoots well under an inch at 100 yards with Winchester USA White Box 45 gr. JHP ammo.
If I am hunting in thick cover where shots will be close, I love this Spartan/Baikal IZH94 O/U 223Rem and 12ga Shotgun perfect for shots under 120yds.
If I am hunting in more open terrain I use my Sako 579 in 22-250AI for the long dog

I'm far from the most experienced person when it comes to coyotes but I think you would be taking 2 steps backwards by swapping a 6-18x onto the gun. Thats alotta scope power for a critter that seems to magically pop out of nowhere 20yards away.
Went out for the first time with my Scorpion & Mojo Critter this morning. Had three different set-ups, didn't see anything but I'm 95% positive I had one come in behind me at my last stand.
Ruger Hawkeye .204, Leupold 4-12
I agree with mud bogger, I use a 3x9 on my coyote rifle, and usually set it at 9 power. The area I usually hunt is elevated and I can generally catch them coming in further out. 9 power is good for a least 300 yds on a target the size of a coyote. Another plus is that the 3x9 does not have so much magnification that if one is in extremely close that you can't still get enough of a decent image to take the shot, also without the adjustable objective you will not have the objective turned to a distance that causes the image to blur so much that it is difficult to see what you are shooting at.
Much more important is to have the scope mounted so that when you raise the rifle you are looking down the scope without having to waste time getting a good sight picture. Of course a real plus is having a scope that gives you a good clear image.
I can guarantee you that if you have a high power scope that eventually you will run into a situation where that they scope is set a too high of a magnification or the adjustable objective is set so the target is out of focus. Been there - done that!!

I agree. I had one for about 3 hunts. It's just to much for yotes. IMO
New Yawk; or go hi-tech and mount an Aimpoint Micro H-1 onto your 6-18X at the 2 o'clock position with a rail. Coyote pops up close, tilt rifle inboard, red dot, bang. Several companies are making these mini rails that mount with a ring onto your scope body. Good stuff.
Burris makes just such a thing for their little fastfire reddot.....

I firmly believe that 50%, quite possibly more, of coyotes that respond are never seen by the hunter. Especially a single hunter without a buddy looking over the first hill downwind.

You learn that "tailgunner" trick when you walk through a fresh snow with no tracks on it as you go into the stand site. Then when you return through that area on the way back 30 minutes later there are smoking hot coyote tracks crossing the ones you made on the way in... things that make you go hummmm!

I'm going to leave the 3-10x44mm scope on it for now. This rifle has always been my "varmint rifle". If the coyote hunting works out, I'll probably have to set up a dedicated coyote rifle.
If you guys are allowed to do so in the non-Bloomberg controlled areas of your state, you might consider an accurate AR with a 1.5-5X or a 2.5-8X for a dedicated coyote carbine.
To purchase a Remmy VTR with the 24" barrel and no Muzzle Brake, you have to go to Cabelas. They have an exclusive deal with Remington. No one else can sell them!!!!

My coyote rifle is a Stevens model 200 in .223 Rem with a 4-12X40mm Leupold scope. It's shoots about 0.5-0.75 MOA with the right ammo. Just picked up a new shotgun for the close in stuff. It's a Mossberg Ulti-mag 12 ga 3 1/2".
This is my buddy and his Sako .223, he used it on deer this year and was satisfied. He could wallpaper a barn with coyote hides he has harvested.

This is what I'm using on windy days or really cold days when I'm wearing a lot of clothes and I want a gun with a shorter length of pull. My daughter's M7 in 257 roberts.
I started using the 243 winchester as a coyote rifle about 6 years back and have had nuttin but wonderful results on coyotes with the 243 as I suspect it will be my coyote rig for life....
I hunt coyotes with a Sam Yang 909 .454 caliber air rifle.
nice air rifle looks like dog dont like it much grin

Damn! That is one beautiful .17 SS.
Is that blueprint posted in the Custom Rifles forum?
Travis
Wookie,
Maybe it's just the camera angle but that rig looks like it was built for a giraffe??
Travis
Now my go to coyote rifle is one of several! School is still out on the Savage model 12 .204 caliber, with 5 x 15 Bushnell Tactical with mil-dot turrets on top the barrel. Next is the Ruger with bull barrel, caliber is the 25-06 with same scope as above.
Then we go to the 6.5-06 in model 70 Winchester with a 4 x 12 Leupold on top. A Winchester model 70 featherweight in the .243 with a 3 x 9 Leupold. Seldom do I use the CZ model 527 in the .222 Remington cal. even though is is a tack driver. I like to hammer those yotes hard!
M number one yote gun is an old model Ruger 77 ultra light in 250 Savage. I load 75 grain V-max pills in it, a lethal yote load. I just bought a Stevens model 200 in 223 and hope to tailor a load with Nosler 55 grain bt pills for her. I also hope to use my Rem. 700 classics in 221 Fireball and 220 Swift sometime this winter.
Wookie,
Maybe it's just the camera angle but that rig looks like it was built for a giraffe??

Yup, I have ape arms, therefore I have rifles with long stocks. They don't call me Wookie for just anything
I see. Looks like a killing machine regardless.

This is one of my favorites:
Tikka T-3 Lite (.223),4-12 Leupy with dots.
It depends on whether you're calling them in or spotting them and blasting. If you're calling, the ranges can be a lot shorter. The best professional hide hunter I've known collected most of his pelts with a single shot 20 guage at short range ... less sewing to do.
If you just want to make them dead, that .240 weatherby would be hard to beat. I carried a 6x.284 which is ballistically in the same ballpark. I packed a .25-'06 some.
If you're trying to save hides, I'd give that .17 FB, .17 Remington, and .204 Ruger real serious consideration.
Right now my calling rifle is basically a 700 LVSF package but rebarreled to .257 roberts loaded with 100 grain ballistic tips to just under 3100 fps. Seems good especially since the areas I call have quite a few cougars in 'em. I have a .204 I could use but the cougars are game animals and nothing under .22 cal is legal for them here.
Tom
Well every one U all have some nice riggs . I got in a coyote hunt last week and used my mod 7 in 22-250 shot one at 275 running and missed at 400 and one around 93 standing boy i was pi$$ed . The winning team shot 14 dogs good shooting. good luck and good shooting. MTHunter
The last couple of years or so I've been messin' around with a Savage 1899 in .250-3000. The Savage is a 1917 vintage takedown model with a Lyman tang peep sight.
You definitely get style points with your choice of rifle and caliber! Well done!!
It all depends on the situation and terrain when I'm calling. I may use a Rem 1100 mag with BBs, a Mini-14 with 1.5-5 scope, a CZ-527 American .223 or a Kimber varmint model .22-250.
I saw your post and noticed that you mentioned that you would shoot a coyote with anything handy. I am thinking about trying coyote hunting. I was thinking about using a marlin 60 .22 lr and only shoot within about 65 yards. What are your thoughts about the .22 lr? I have put cans out at 65 yards filled with sand and the 40 grain bullets that I was shooting went through the cans without a bit of trouble. I know many people scoff at the mention of the .22lr;however, I have total respect for this little caliber! Thanks for any thoughts! Clyde
My personal favorite is a Savage Model 10 Predator Hunter in 22-250. Sports a Leupold VX-L scope in matching Mossy Oak brush pattern cammo. Had the scope/base/rings dipped by Tarjac in NY. Finished rig is one sexy package. Coyotes swoon at the mere sight of it...
.223 AR, HSM 50gr V Max, Burnham Bro & Tally Ho. 3.5-10x40 Leupold. Carried heavy rifles and long rifles for several years. Broke down and set up this short, light AR and happy I did.

depends on teh mood i'm in i guess.
remmy 700 ADL .223 in a Ti mtn rifle stock, soon to be 223AI..had a Weaver 6-24x at first, pulled that one off & sticking a bushnell elite 3-9x...was going to use it as a close calling gun, but barrel is a tad long for my tastes in the timber. so pulled that one, now its back to a Bushnell Elite 5-15x. pic is it wearing the 3-9x.
have a new one on the way in, remmy 7 predator camo in .223. not sure what glass is going up top yet, but open to suggestions.
for calling in timber, sometimes take a TC Contender Carbine in 32/20, 4x sightron compact.
dont do much lloonngg range stuff, but when i do its with this one..remmy sendero satinless fluted in 25/06, in an HS stock:
havent called in a few weeks now, last one got popped with a remmy light varmint in 223, topped of with a Bausch & Lomb Elite 4-16x.
NOW THAT IS A BIG DOG WAY TO GO.

personalized Savage 99 in 250-3000
75g v-max made small entry (.257") and exit (.75") wounds. Blood in photo due to exploration of stomach contents, not excessive bullet damage.
My Coyote Medicine:
Caliber: .257WBY
Action: Savage 112 (Bedded)
Barrel: 30 inch Hart (1-9 Twist)KDF Muzzle Brake
Scope: Nightforce 12-42 x 56mm NP-R2 Reticle
Bullet: GSC Custom 100gr HV @ 3940fps
From my testing, what has made this rifle what it is is the GSC 100gr HV Bullet. The Rifle shoots sub-moa out to as far as I've been able to test it so far (800yds).
Who makes the stock on that snazzy .257 WM?
The Stock is a combined effort between a woodshop and the gunsmith. It is actually the original stock but has been "reworked" a bit - or a lot!
It looks like ya saddled up 'The Stock' with one of them English pancake jobs....
Currently I'm sporting an SPS Tactical .223 wearing a vari-x II 3-9x40. Working very well at the moment.
In about 2 months it will be a RRA Coyote Carbine upper on a lower I built wearing a VX-II 1-4x20 in LaRue mounts
For open country calling, it's an SPS Varmint in 22-250 (soon to get ackley treatment) bedded in an HS stock wearing a Monarch 6-24x50 with Fine Crosshair reticle.
the latest addition...remmy 7 predator with a Burris 3-9x ballistic plex, i did a home brewed camo job on the scope.
like the feel of it, but yet to take it to the woods...hoping next week it'll get a workout.
Gerald
What caliber is the Predator?
Ingwe
BTW: Sweet job on the scope
Ingwe...its a .223.
scope turned out better than i thought it would, i taped off the parts i didnt want sprayed, then used a basecoat of textured speckle-paint. let that dry, laid sone branches across there & oversprayed with black & dark green, did the same with rings & bases. just didnt look right to me with a black scope up there, and i had a bunch of "spare scopes" so couldnt justify a new piece of glass.
My dog rifle: M&P 15 with RRA two stage. Was wearing a 6x36 Leupold with LR reticle. That's been replaced with the MK AR 3-9X.

First try posting photos- bear with me. Savage m12 in .243win, leuopold vxIII 4.5x14 w/varmint reticle. Works great when they hang up- and not bad on close work.
