12 gauge 3" magnum with BB (Hornady ammo).

How do the BB's work on coyotes out to 40 yards for you (yes, they pattern well for me)

I shoot Federal brand and try to limit my shots to about 30 yards but I have enough kills at 40 (and a few close to 50) that I would take the shot if he hung up there. Once they get past about 35 yards I try to wait for a broadside shot (versus head-on) and noticed my losses drop pretty significantly.

BB is ok, but marginally in my experience. I've rolled a few and lost them in the thick stuff. They work great on fox so that's why I use it, but I'd suggest moving to Dead Coyote T shot if you can stomach spending $4 a shot.

Steelhead,
Lead or plated lead BB works well enough with nice center dense patterns to 35 - 40 yards. Tungsten stuff is fantastic. Back when tungsten was affordable I bought a crap load of Remington Wingmaster HD-BB after doing a bunch of pattern testing. Those tungsten BB shot break a coyote up like nothing I've ever seen. Unfortunately tungsten is through the roof now.

I have rolled quite a few coyotes with lead BB loads at 40 yds and beyond.

39 long paces and the BB's penetrated to under the hide on the far side. 1oz NP BB's in a 2 1/2" 16ga, my goto gun for the thick stuff, it has a 6.5x58R barrel underneath for anything over 40, pretty handy. I'm moving to BB's in all my combo guns as I don't have to worry about streching out the shotgun as I have the rifle barrel for that.

AZ 11 miles north of the MX border.

I can kill coyotes good at 40 yards here`s my 12 gauge load: federal 3 inch copper plated lead BB`S in a 12 gauge full choke. it smacks a coyote good ,I generaly carry two guns. AR10 built by norene firearms out of montana in a custom 243 Winchester and a single shot 12 gauge which I painted the shotgun white.wish you great hunting this winter !

I usually carry two guns to a stand too; a rifle and a shotgun. My shotgun is a Benelli super nova, rifle is generally a model 600 in 222. My favorite coyote load is #2 Hevishot in a 3 1/2" shell. I have killed several coyotes at 70 yards with this combo. I haven't had one run away from that load yet. I also like the Federal Tungsten-iron load with 3" shells in BB.
I have been carrying 3" copper plated BB loads (Federal) this week. I noticed on the side of the box it specifically states that #2, and BB are for predators!

I haven't shot coyotes with bbs or hevi shot, but a good dose of 3" # 4buck is killer on a coyote.

Having killed coyotes, bobcats, and foxes with 00, 2,4,5,6, and 7 1/2 shot as incidentals while bird hunting I can see no reason that BBs wouldn't work great.

I like #4 buck as well. I shoot it through a .685 choke in a .722 bored gun which equates to a tight full. Big shot can be choke sensitive. Patternmaster chokes shoot big shot great if your gun is equipped with choke tubes.

I prefer to use #4 buck on the Coyote's here Scott, but Michigan has some strange laws.

For night hunting, I'm restricted to either a rimfire or shotgun loaded with anything less than Buckshot or slug. So, I use Winchester lead BB loads that I scored at a Scheels several years ago and they work pretty well.....

I hear you, but it's illegal to use #4 buck in Tennessee.

What about tshot? Like dead coyote? Expensive though.
Posted By: Steelhead Re: BB on coyotes - 01/05/16
T is fine but I ain't shooting $5 a bang shotgun shells.

Used BB's on more than you could haul in a wheat truck.
Its in the choke. Steel I can get you with a guy that make you a choke to throw the pattern you want. Different brands of ammo make a diff.
I know a guy that might have t's and BB's

My bad, BBB is the biggest shot you can shoot in Tn. I shoot coyotes in SW Virginia on my pops old home place. Never even checked regs in Tn. That is another nonsense law though, what could the possable reason for that be?
