I am planning to be in Northeastern MT this October. I will be upland bird hunting with a group of guys but me and a buddy want to break away from them a coupe of days and coyote hunt. I have my own gear. Looking for any advice or tips for the area.
Sorry.... But there ain't many coyotes left up there. Pat and Logan keep the buggers thinned right down....grin
On my bird hunting trips out there we’ve found coyotes incredibly easy to call in October they do smarten up in a hurry once you start hunting an area but there’s so much to hunt out there you won’t have to call to the same coyotes twice. It’s completly different than what I’m used to in Wisconsin. As long as you get away from the truck and it’s out of sight from approaching coyotes,you keep the wind from blowing your scent into the area they’re coming from you’ll call them in.
Last season was the fifth year in a row I bird hunter Montana and the bird numbers weren’t good at all. I’d be more concerned with that.

less birds, equals more time to get the ol' birdog acclimated as a decoy dog....
Switch, I have done some reading on the internet, and I believe I read one report that the upland bird hunting should be average this year. I read one post where a southeastern MT resident had a hun with 14 chicks in his yard. Maybe we will find a few. if not I will hunt waterfowl or coyotes harder.

I recommend you Hunt bird all day and then come sundown Hunt for a couple hours go get some sleep then get up 2 1/2 hours before sunrise and get after them again until an hour after sunrise.
Gonna make for some short sleep periods but i done it and it works.
I recommend a red spotlight that can quickly switch to clear lens.

I have another question. I have a Garmin Alpha dog tracking / shocking system. Garmin sells cards for each state . The Alpha can read the cards and shows property owners, property lines, and an aerial overview of the land. Have any of you seen the Montana card and does it show these BLM lines?
Buy a onX hunt Montana chip for the alpha.
It shows everything.
