What time of day do you hunt them? I usually go about an hour after sunrise until mid-morning. When it's cold I go mid afternoon during the warmest part of the day.

What part of the day works best for you? They seem to move all day long most of the time.

About daylight until I get a limit, get tired, or the squirrel quit stirring around. Typically that happens about 11:00 or thereabouts. Activity picks up again a few hours before dark. I prefer morning hunts.

This. I get out in the dark just like a lot of my other hunting and hunt until the little nut munchers stop messing around.

I like watching the woods wake up is the main reason I go out so early.

Some mornings the squirrels don't wake up for an hour after daylight, it's those days I notice minimal bird talk and don't see many other critters for a while after daylight.

I like early morning too . I like to be in a good spot before daylight and let the daylight and the squirrels filter around me . Sometimes I hate to shoot and disturb the tranquillity.

That's interesting observation. Wonder what it is that makes everything sleep in on certain days.

Deep cold... If it's really cold out they tend to stay holed up a little longer in the morning.

Ya. I don't think he was talking about deep cold though. I've noticed similar days and I've often wondered why stuff didn't seem to be moving.

No telling. I don't actually squirrel hunt when it's real cold.

Could be moon phases or a number of other reasons that I haven't noticed or it may be that on those says I am just in the wrong area.

Shot a big fox squirrel last night right at 5 pm. Only one I saw. But I was only out from 4-6.

I haven't a great place any more to go squirrel hunting. The Brother in law has begun farming road to road, bulldozed out ponds, and got rid of some trees where he couldn't even farm. My other top spots have been sold off into mostly small acreages and houses built on them. The great oaks and hickories bulldozed or logged and not allowed to replenish. The local DNR wildlife area is an overcrowded park and a NO HUNTING area. You have to get a reservation to even pitch a tent! There is no shortage of squirrels in my garden though. Can't shoot them in town but I noticed a few dying off this growing season. Wink;Wink. Aren't spring piston projectors a wonderful thing? Be Well, RZ.

Two big pin oak trees here in the yard, both loaded with acorns this year. Six suburban grays doing what squirrels do in the fall from dawn to dusk.

They have been killing my garden all growing season. Be Well, RZ.

as much as i like watching day break, i see the most activity after 730 or 8. seems to peak mid morning and then gets good again around 3 or so. works out nice for a truck lunch and nappy. i have found a cool, drizzly day (like today) will be good almost all day.

I love hunting them, and deer too, in a light drizzle.
