.....started Sunday. The boy came up and we headed to the woods about daybreak. It was beautiful in the woods, and NO MOSQUITOS!!! They haven't started really hitting the nuts yet, and I only saw 1. Two shots, but I got the ole girl. Went out yesterday, Saw 3, and shot at 2 different ones, and missed em both! Dam*ed eyes and old age..... The boy got one on Sunday, also.

Want to go hunting, but they are talking very hot and humid for the next 4-5 days. Doubt if I go for a while.
Changed my mind, and went for about 2 1/2 hrs., before it started getting too hot. Saw 2 and nailed 1 with my good ole single shot H&R Sportster. 1 shot, and DRT.

Looks like a great time. Squirrel season starts September 15th in my home state. One of these years I’d like to go down to Indiana and try a dove opener.

WCH I got it from a pretty good source that theres a bunch of red fox squirrels on the public land out of Lovell on Bighorn Lake.In the cottonwoods of course. If you get in therefor a look, let me know. Here they are considered an invasive specie, so no closed season and no limit....but most of them live in town or on the Powder river.
The boys have killed ten so far. They haven’t been out much due to the heat. All gray squirrels and all out of hickories.
Fried em’ up and threw them in the oven for a couple of hours covered in cream of mushroom soup. Fine vittles!!
Sounds good. They ain’t bad fried and in baked beans either.
Way to get an early kick-off to the fall seasons! Thanks for sharing.
Too many ticks and skeeters around here for squirrels this early.
Fox Squirrel hunting in north east Indiana was always a blast, but wow, that was a long time ago.
My old deer spot west of Logansport had a mature 40 acre oak woods on it.

Proly 50/50 fox and grey.

Not too many reds.

Used to shoot em w my Ruger pistol.

Current deer spot is mostly reds and too many houses around, have to wage shotgun war on em after deer season.

Too hot, buggy......and is my deer woods, so stayin tje hell out.
Might hit Winamac if we get a cooldown.

Need to see how the 455 does w subs.

Could run the Contender w em too.
Will do ingwe, might be that way soon..
Squirrel starts here in pa. september 11th
Try to zéro my High Standard pistol this weekend.
Irons

Have a Buckmark w reflex already done, but it has the walnut target grips ( slabs wo finger groove ). Does NOT feel as good as the old High Standard.

W bridged rear sight a bbl change and optics looks silly, since rear sight stays on the Trophy.

Might have to buy another HS for optics LOL

Still prefer pistol to rifle on tree rats.

Glad that you got to get out and enjoy it!!!
Finally got to go this am, since it cooled off some. Popped one with my single shot .22, not 5 mins. after I hit the woods. One shot, straight down, but I couldn't find him in the weeds. Two hrs. later, I came by the same tree, heading for the truck. Walked under the tree from a different direction, and there laid the lil booger. He died closer to the tree, than I thought. Oh well, I'd rather be lucky than good any daygrin.

Waiting on the 11th for the opening day in Alabama. I've seen quite a few in my bit of woods, if they don't evaporate suddenly.
Nailed another today, with my single shot H&R Sportster. One shot DRT grin. No pics today because I forgot my danged camera.......
Popped me another, this am, not 15 minutes after I got to the woods. Shoulda had at least 1 more, but I missed the lil booger.

Didn't forget my camera today......grin

One squirrel at a time...
Yep, one at a time...... But I guess at 70, that's better than not being able to hunt at all! grin
Absolutely, I hope to still be going at it at that age and beyond. A bad day in the woods beats most days anywhere else.
Finally got out a couple times last week. First day out was a "lets see if this works" kind of day. I took my pudelpointer with me. He loves to chase and look for squirrels in the yard, so I figured I take him with me. While he didn't tree any squirrels, he did well listening and retrieved the two I shot. He was a bit hesitant at first, but found and brought both of them to me.

Saturday morning I headed to an area with quite a few mature hickory trees. Saw and shot one on the way in and then ended up getting 4 more out of one hickory tree.

Finally got out today and scored 2! My one-a-day streak has been brokengrin. Got the second one thanks to my Mr. Squirrel Whistle!

Hey pointer, sweet dog!!
I decided to wait until it cools off this year to start hunting them- too many ticks in my area to risk it (for me). I’m looking forward to some crisp mornings in the squirrel woods, though!
Our season in Ark runs from May till the end of Feb. It’s been too hot for me so far, temps are supposed to be in the 70s/40s this week. I had back surgery today so I’ll miss that window. I’m to the point I’d rather run a small trap line and squirrel hunt as much as anything.

Glad you and your Son are hunting together👍👍
Finally got out, and shoot a couple more. Finally nailed 2, with the old single shot

You do mighty good with that little Sportster.
Phil, the lil ole sportster nailed another one this AM...........grin

The boy got with the program and nailed 5 yesterday morning. Me?.....nada......old age, dry eyes, etc. My story and I'm sticking to it.grin

It's because he did his sharpshooting with a M39! Squirrels get light headed and fall out of the tree when they see a M39. smile
I feel sorry for you guys that have to wait til fall to kill squirrels.

Kill them young ones in the spring like we can and you won't have finer eating.
