Hey Gang,
What is your opinion on shot size for squirrels in a .410. We are using an old Iver Johnson single shot with a full choke. I have shells in #6 and #71/2. By the way, my 10 year old daughter got her 2nd squirrel, and first of the season today. I am a proud Daddy!!!!
I settled on #7 1/2 for mine. There were too big of holes in the pattern with 4s & 6s
Congrats for you daughter. Pattern in everything. Mine loves #6s. Will be starting a grandson soon.
I'm partial to #6s, but as stated pattern is everything. Congrats to your daughter.

Ditto.
And also, consider this.. I had much better patterns out of my old Stevens 22/410 with Remington Express 2-1/2" versus their express 3" shells. Strange, but true. Anyone have an explanation for that one?
I'll take #6's, hate biting into a shot pellet when eating and smaller shot loads them up too much for me.
#5's, when you can find them, is what I used to use...eons ago before my 22 rifle/pistol days.
Had an old single shot 410 that sacked a truckload when I was a boy.

Shorter shot column. At one time could obtain # 9's in both 2 1/2" and 3".

Exactly! I still squirrel hunt with an old Savage model 24 in .22/.410 sometimes and #6 is much easier to pick out of the meat.
Depending on the gun, I use 5s or 6s. Used to buy according to how the gun patterned normally it was 5s, now I am lucky to find any 5s on the shelf and have to settle for 6s. Too many pellets in 7.5s for me to want to chew.
