Dang right, I still keep an old Knight MK-85 Predator in 54 cal, wears a receiver peep and fires 530gr No Excuse bullets just for Colorado legal elk hunting, they're damn good bullets, accurate and easy to load/re-load.

I killed a Bull Elk and Mule deer with a 50 cal 460 and a freight train could not have knocked them down faster.

NICE! good to hear that OEH, I always suspected they'd do well, that rifle of mine has to weigh less then 6 lbs, would be a dandy mountain elk rifle, also have four old speed loaders for it,

I will be using the 350gr. Hornady FPB bullets under 90gr. of BH209 this year for my CO cow elk hunt. I know some guys complain about how hard they are to load. I bought a .501" LEE sizing die used for cast bullets and run them thru the die a couple times and they come out to a perfect .502"! They load just like they are supposed to and are a MUCH better bullet than the Power Belts. When my supply of FPB's are gone I will switch to the 300gr. THOR or maybe the 350gr. lead BOR Lock bullets from federal.

I also really like the looks of those No Excuses bullets! May have to order a sample pack someday.

Elk Country

Legal for what? Here are the regs:

1 To hunt deer, pronghorn or bear, conical bullets must be a minimum of .40
caliber, and round-ball bullets must be a minimum of .50 caliber

2 To hunt elk or moose, conical bullets must be a minimum of .50 caliber, and
round-ball bullets must be a minimum of .54 caliber.

3 From .40 caliber to .50 caliber, bullets must weigh a minimum of 170 grains.

4 If greater than .50 caliber, bullets must weigh a minimum of 210 grains.

5 l. Sabots are prohibited during muzzleloading seasons.

So for 50-54 caliber bullets, as long as it's not a sabot it's legal. That's a long list.

Yep, I always heard no sabots, or scopes.

Or pelletized powder, or electronic ignitions. But for bullets it's pretty much anything but sabots. Which makes the OP kind of an odd question for a guy who lives in CO and has a blog on muzzleloaders.

well excuse me for taking the time to help folks that constantly are emailing me asking me about legal projectiles they can use and what i'd recommend. There are folks that actually need a visual image to get a full understanding of what they have to use, i just offer them a little more guidance on what projectile has limits as far as powder charges. Hell, I ran into a guy hunting elk with a 245gr powerbelt one year.

no excuse conicals are the way to go. I shoot them in my knight mk-85. Easy to load and slam through stuff.

i wouldnt say no excuse bullets are the best way to go, especially if you are a blackhorn209 shooter where the powder needs a snug fit in order to work properly. but no excuses certainly are great shooting bullets in my rifles with real black powder or even pyrodex. I just added no excuses to the page as well. Looking at bullshop bullets but their website seems ifffy when i click on links.
