Been looking around for a flintlock project, parts or more likely a rifle kit. I came across this lock and find it very sexy. Actually a couple different versions... Machined, not cast and priced accordingly. Anyone know about them, their rifle kits, etc? Any discussion is appreciated prior to contacting them. I know less than nothing... Many will agree.

This guy's hands ate beat up pretty good. Not sure what to make of it. LOL
There are plenty of videos on youtube. I never heard a bad word about the kits, in fact they are the gold standard now in home projects.
If I were to build one, this would be the path.

Thanks so much for the reassuring words... I am almost trembling as I just saw that I can order with a down payment! LOL
More eye candy here. Kits finished by Jim and other master craftsman.

without a doubt Jim's kits are the finest kit you can buy at the price point.
but take a plank, barrel, lock, trigger, buttplate, and thimboles, SLOWLEY fit them together, after watching every how to on youtoube of course and you are really home.

Hey! Welcome back Tom! What a pleasant surprise this evening! Had us worried our Idaho friend!
Only thing holding me back is deciding on caliber and wood.. Elk or squirrel? LOL Best build an elk hunter - Colonial rifle, though I like their Southern Mountain Rifle plenty as well. Going to talk to Mr Kibler soon. That last link has a section on his and customers' work with some great ideas. Geeze I'd like to build a squirrel rifle too. đ
Been wanting one in 58 cal

What's your stock wood of choice?
Prob. fancy maple. I really like the ones with iron furniture. I also think a 58 is the way to go.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Seems we're on a good path.
I'd likely prefer iron over brass as I am more familiar working with it, however, seems the iron is on the Southern Mountain Rifle, in 32, 36, 40 and 45 calibers? I can imagine me standing there holding my 36cal squirrel gun admiring it's fine lines, while the big bull leisurely strolls passed at 60 yards... 54 or 58 makes good sense for a hunter in our AO. Rather shoot a little deer with a 58 than a big elk with a 45 is how I am figuring, given our generous season overlap, and just having one flintlock.
Thinking of a 72" stock blank is new to me, considerations beyond appearance. Safe bet he'd not send something unsound out the door, but, geeze that's long!
Yea the Southern Mountain Rifle I believe is the only one they offer in iron. I am not much of a fan of 45 calibers. A 50 is a strait up solid deer round ball gun and so is the 58. I could do without a 54 as well.
They have all Colonial Rifle barrels in stock, 3 week turn around, no payment needed to order! Ohhhhhh yah. Supposed to get some information on Monday from Jim regarding wood choices, I'm 95% going for it.
Mtnboomer, Looks like a good kit. Iâd probably get it in 58. Itâs hard to go wrong with the caliber. I am not sure how the barrels measure up in weight between the 50 and the 58.
i was in the middle of a .32 southern when the covid got me. first on the list if i ever get out of hospital. day11 and 4 more maybe to go. stay well and post pictures/porn of your projects!
Get healed up.
Bad schitt fo sho!!
Kiblers?
I like their little fudge stripe cookies!!

Get well soon - that rifle needs finished!!
I did that exact rifle a couple of years ago and have more fun hunting squirrels with it than a guy should have! I picked mine up at Jimâs shop talked with him for a bit - he is a first class person and his products are unbelievable for a âkitâ. One of the guys I shoot with was building his locks and he has become a master craftsman when it comes to locks and building muzzleloaders! I highly recommend these for anyone looking.

Rooting for you and looking forward to you being out of there and back doing the good things!
For now, and forever, enjoy these pictures of Jim's very tasteful and well-executed carving and spectacular aged finish work...

Looks like 10 oz lighter on the 58 than the 50... 43.25" should be plenty! Been informed that the barrels are supplied by Green Mountain and Rice.
Correction, stocks blanks for the Colonial Rifle need to be 2.5"x60"x7", not the 72" I posted previously.

Thanks for sharing. I used to live in Silver Gray squirrel country and can imagine the fun... Many years ago I was wandering the squirrel woods and met a guy with a small caliber muzzleloader and he let me fire it. Don't recall if it was a flintlock or percussion. Have wanted one since...

Been again wanting to put together a 58. Doesnât look like a bad rifle. Not a fan of the brass, I always like the âpoor boyâ bare bones iron look.
You get a kit and I'll Cerakote the brass black for you! LOL
Hey, check out Brass Black! Maybe? Just an idea. Apparently, cold blue as well...
Naa I could make all those parts myself.
Could or would? Make sure to share if you do find something more to your liking or put something together.
I could, not sure if I I would put the effort in it though once I got it. I have been wanting more and more to start building own flintlocks.
Heard back today. Nice communications with them...
Only one question remains, which grade of Maple?
Colonial Rifle kit, 58 caliber rifled barrel, no patch box, and plain, fancy or extra fancy maple which is from Pennsylvania?
My stockmaking instructor at Trinidad told me once youâll have the exact same amount of time in a plain piece of wood as you would a fancy piece of wood - which one would you rather look at when your finished?
If you go fancy Iâd request a photo if theyâll oblige so you see what youâll be working with?
Iâll try and get some pics up of the one I finishedâŚ..I chose the extra fancyđ

Thanks! I know I know I know... It's only money. LOL
Love to see anyone's maple....

Prob in the Colonial Iâd go extra fancy BUT what does the blank look like? For me picking out blanks is like picking out steaks at the butcher shop or vise versa. You wonât be going wrong with a 58. That barrel swamped?

If theyâll send photos it would be of the semi-inlet no need to look at blanks here.

Order in.
Colonial Rifle kit, 58 caliber, rifled, Extra Fancy Maple. I ordered with a delayed delivery planned for the end of November...
Thanks guys!
Now share your maple stock finishing tips?
MB - I tried to post photos of my southern rifle but it says photos to large even though I supposedly resized to meet the 2MB maximum size?? Anyway I'd be glad to email you some photos if you'd like just send me your email.
Can't wait to see your Colonial when you get it - I would like a larger caliber muzzleloader to do some deer/bear hunting with.

Prepare the rotten vegetables, stale bread and other appropriate projectiles from the crowd! Today, Kibler's announced a $75 off sale on maple and fancy maple. So, I dropped down to standard for a $325 cut over the Extra Fancy! The horror of it.....

Thanks, I'll get in touch and post them up.
In regards to finishing, ask him if he's got any scrap to send you as test pieces. Then get some Laurel Mountain Forge stains and see what tickles your fancy. You'll get all sorts of input for what finish to use. What's your plan for the metal? I like rust bluing the best because it's historical, I like the look of blued metal, and it's easy to do: just boil water.

I am seeking test pieces. Maple is new to me, both in looks and processes to get it there. So I will do a bunch more picture searching.
No decision on the metal. I need to look into options. I might Cerakote some of it! The horror. đ
The brass? Polished or black, probably not try to antique it.
Since I decided to skip the extra fancy wood, I am leaning even more towards a pure utility hunting rifle. I won't go camo or something obscene though....
I just don't know yet what to think. (obviously)

Blasphemy! Well itâs your rifle. Not always a fan of brass, itâs ok but Iâve been really into iron mounted guns. Now you are going to have to fiddle a 58 flintlock pistol together.
Aqua fortis on the maple, flash it with a torch then rinse it with a baking soda and water solution to neutralize the acid. Finish with hand rubbed linseed oil
