I'm going to try some BH 209 in an Omega, mainly due to the clean up and corrosion issues with other BP substitues.

I know that MLs are very individualistic, but would be curious as to any pet loads/combos folks have. I've used the search function but have not found but a smattering of info regarding the Omega and BH 209.

Thanks!

David
I only shoot the 200 gr (.40) shock wave. Start at 100 grs and load in 5 gr increments to 110 grs and I be you will find an accurate load.

My loads are rather boring, we just shoot the 200 grain shock wave and BH-209 and all the deer die....rather quickly.

I really like the Barnes Spitfire sabots in my Omega. I'm ready to try some BH-209 but am waiting til all my 777 pellets are shot up. I use two 50gr pellets and one 30gr pellet for a almost MOA load at 100 yards.

It kills and penetration isn't an issue.
Thanks for the input guys, I have shot the 240 gr XTPs and the black ?MMR sabot in the past.

Last year I tried the Blackhorn 209 in my T/C .50 CAL. Omega. I shot the 295 grain powerbelt hollowpoints over 90 grains of BH 209. That load was accurate in my Omega and I did shoot an 8 point buck at 35 yards distance. He only went a short distance of less than 30 yards before falling dead in a large ditch. I must say clean up with the BH 209 was easy with a little of the T/C NO. 13 bore cleaner and a few patches. I even talked my brother in law (A diehard Pyrodex man) into using the BH209. He shoots a knight in-line and he really liked the powder and how easy it cleans up.

80-90 grains BH209, Win209 primer, and .50 cal 348 grain powerbelts worked well for us.

Ragged hole 50 yard groups.
120Gr of BH and a 200Gr. Shock Wave worked on a nice Kentucky buck year before last @ 180 yards, and another nice one last year at around 60 or 70 yards. Also a young doe last year at around 100 yards.

Didn't get to try them on elk this year, but 100gr BH 209 behind 300gr Thors shot well on paper. FPB's shot about the same but I like the Thor design.

Same in my Triumph
120gr BH209 over a 250gr SST...shot it again today 3 shots cloverleaf at 100yds
You shoot that thing over a chronograph yet? If so, what kind of velocity are you getting?
Thanks again guys. Have the rifle in hand now, about to put some of Doug's Ultra Bore Coat in it, and will sight it in this weekend. I figure that clean up should be about as easy as it could get with BH209 and Ultra Bore.

I'll post what seems to behave best in this particular rifle.

100 grains by volume of Blackhorn over a 300 grain Hornady XTP in a Harvester Crush Rib sabot. I use the Harvester sabots because the bore on my Omega is very tight and I got tired of bruising my palm while loading.

No not as of yet...but figuring 2000ish fps
That's what I thought too. I'm getting right at 2,000 with 105 grains 3F 777 and the 250 TMZ.

A friend of mine chronographed some loads withthe 285 barnes spitfire out of a 26 inch barrel. 2030 with 3 50 gr pellets of 777. 120 of bh209 was 1960 and 130 of bh209 was just about 2000 fps. Does 120 of bh 209 usually equal 150gr of pellets of 777?
Hey eyeguy......i bet that friend of yours was my brother!!!!
I just chrono'd 100 grains of BH209 under a Speer 270 gr .429 bullet in a Harvester sabot at 1880 from a TC Triumph, 28" barrel.
ok....so if someone has shot 120 or 130 gr of BH pushing a 245 barnes boattail spitfire, let me know. Eyeguy is a muzzleloading nut as well and we shoot out to 200+ yds on trophy critters here. I know he LOVES the clean up of Blackhorn....but are people finding it shoots more consistently then other powder as well????

I shot a T/C Prohunter....and if shoot just fine now, but if i can do BETTER with BH, then i will just forgo the remaining 3/4 Triple 777 pellets i have.

I don't think you'll want to go past 120grains with the BH.
I shot pellets with decent accuracy, then I tried BH209......the pellets found the trash. smile

I've yet to run across someone that's tried BH that didn't find great epiphany, followed by some sort of anger in not trying it sooner. wink
Thanks Skane.............
My good buddy and brother have tested it and buddy has made the switch, brother is strongly considering it. Will most likely have to give it a whirl now as well.
Thanks for costing me $$! frown Well, maybe saving me time tho with clean up and if better shooting, its alllll good. smile

It's what we do here. laugh
And the time savings is worth it. Spend more time shooting / spending with family and less time cleaning / dicking around. wink
Actually, you need to add hunting in there somewhere...

True, true.

Went to the range yesterday with the T/C .50 CAL. and was going to check the scope. What a disaster of a range session, but it did remind me why I always shoot my rifles before hunting season. Yesterday before I started shooting the muzzleloader with the Blackhorn 209 and power belts, I made sure the gun was clean and dry. Out of about 10 trys I got the muzzleloader to fire one good time. The other times the bullet barely made it out of the barrel and I had to pull the breech plug and push the powder and bullet out on the other times. After convincing myself that yea it was the Blackhorn 209 that I just bought last year I decided to try some IMR White Hots that I bought last year. Every time I pulled the trigger the gun fired and I did get some decent groups with the White Hots.

My big question was could the Blackhorn 209 powder go bad so quick? I didn't think it would. It smelled strong and looked dry just like day one. I had stored it in a room in the house in a cool and dry location. After talking with some other guys on the net, I discovered that some people were having trouble with Winchester 209 primers and the Blackhorn 209 powder. They also were having ignition problems. I did not try any different primers yesterday, since the only ones I had were Remington Muzzleloader Primers. I had read on the container of the Blackhorn 209 where it said not to use primers that were called muzzleloader primers, but to use the regular 209 shotgun primers. At this point I am going to use the IMR White Hots since I am running out of time before deer season starts. They might not group as well but they should be good enough for my up close brush hunting location.

You guys have any idea or input on this. It had to be either the powder or the primers. I had almost decided it was the Blackhorn 209, but how could a container of that go bad in a year. Could it actually have been the Winchester 209 primers? They are about a year old also. Any input on this would be appreciated.
Change your primers. Try the full strength 209 primers by Federal. Don't use the soft 209 primers that are recommended for Triple 7.
Posted By: eyeguy Re: TC Omega and Blackhorn 209 - 10/25/10
I had perfect ignition with win 209 primers in my TC triumph but 50/50 ignition in my knight disc extreme with the win 209 primers. The problems in my knight came right after spit patch range cleaning it so some residue may have gotten in the breech plug opening. I was told to use CCI 209 magnum primers and since I swithched havent had one misfire.
On a side note has anyone noticed more blowback with the CCI magnum primers. I am noticing stuff hitting me in the face with my knight and the full plastic jackets. Some of the jackets are being reused so that may or may not have something to do with it?

I use CCI primers and have had no problems so far. I took a whitetail last week with my Omega, CCI primer, 100gr BH209 and a 300gr Thor. Through and through both shoulders.

Tasty backstraps BTW smile
to heck with the federals ive had so many hang fires with those and ended up scrubbing my rifles frame due to them being so filthy.

CCI 209M primers in my rifles.

Hey how about a field report! Im going after bull elk here very shortly on nov 6th-14th. 100gr blackhorn209, winchester w209 primers " stores are out of cci's frown " 300gr Ballistic Tip Thor.
Posted By: Jester Re: TC Omega and Blackhorn 209 - 10/27/10

Last I knew, 300's weren't available in ballistic tip. That was probably early summer.

I hunted south of Gunnison the 1st 5 days of ML. The days were hot and the elk we saw were above timberline. Not much rutting activity yet at that time.
yep they are now available with the ballistic tip. Give thor an email
I bought some BH 209 last spring to use in my TC Triumph. Using 110grs. of BH under a 250gr. Barnes EZ Load spitfire and a CCI magnum primer, I get incredible accuracy. Some 3 shot groups at the bench have been less than moa and never much more than an inch. I chronographed this load in my rifle. It averaged 1891 fps. In my friend's Tradition ML it averaged 1919 fps.
Though I didn't use BH last deer season, I did use the Barnes Spitfire with Triple7. With 3 shots I took 3 big doe. This year I will be using Black Horn.
