The ones we usually use are lucky to make it 20 shots. What is the best kind of flint that money can buy?
If you will do a search in this forum I believe you can find a website that offers English and German flints. Either are better than what you can buy at Wal-Mart.
Wall
The best real flints are the French amber flints but they are almost impossible to find these days. There are still some private dealers hoarding their remaining supply and charging an arm and a leg for them. But they really are superior to anything else. I have a secret source that I will not reveal.
If all you want is reliable ignition for range shooting and/or hunting try a synthetic Duraflint.
Otherwise the English black flints are the next best thing.
I'm not a fan of either the German or American cut agate flints but they are still superior to the junk sold by T/C and CVA.
Rick:
Do you know of a website that can give a description of these Duraflints. My supplier of French is out and have been using the German Flint. I would be interested in looking at something else.
Wall
Wall,
Don't have a web site but you could try these phone numbers. Elk Enterprises (the home of DuraFlint) 800 796-2762 or 805 382-1817. Thet could send you their brochures.
Otherwise, ask the question on the Traditional Muzzleloaders Message Hide. Several of the regulars over there use them.
