Took both with my Traditions St.Louis Hawken .50cal with 70gr 3fg Goex, .020" patch and home cast .490" round ball. Both are one shot kills. The doe dropped on the spot, the bull went MAYBE 30 yards after a double lung hit.

Kinda makes you feel foolish for paying up the ass for "premium" bullets.

What's the barrel length on your carbine there?

What range did you take them at?
Where is a spike bull legal during muzzleloader season?

And I shoot an average of 10-20 ML bullets a year so I'm probably spending less than you did for your gear to make your own.
Look in the booklet on page 32.

Lots of units where there are no point restrictions. In my case, unit 84.
Well done big block!
Nice hat, too!
Good shooting!

I've always wanted to kill an Elk with my .54 cal TC Hawken! It works well at the Ranch on feral hogs with round balls & 100 grains of Goex.

Then do it!!!!
Congrats on the double!
....but I don't feel the least bit foolish about what I spend on muzzleloader bullets. I spend more on convenience store coffee every year.

I don't either. Especially when the guy spouting off is the biggest promoter of premium muzzleloader bullets on this site.
IT HURT THEY SAY WHEN A GUY LIKE U SHOOT A ANIMAL OR ANIMALS LIKE YOURS LESS THEN 150 YARDS OR SO GREAT JOB

The deer was maybe 40 yards, the bull was 25-30 yards.

Not a carbine, its a 28" barrel. 50cal - 1:48 twist.
More pics of the bull.

Congrats!
That is so Awesome!! Congratulations to some fine hunting!

My old .54 cva is a whitetailed killin' mosheen with round balls, but I always wanted to shoot an elk with it. Great to see the results on your elk.

Where'd you them?
I'm always a bit shocked to find this is news to anybody. Been shooting prb for over 40 years and always had excellent results
Great job BB! I'm hoping to replicate your results this fall here in WA.
Hell of a deal BB, looks like you have the winters meat supply covered, and then some. cool

I do know 58 cal and 8 bore round balls kill hard and fast, mine are probably cast in the neighborhood of around 15 on the BHS, they penetrate.
Heck, it's even possible to kill critters with an unpatched round ball too!
................................................if you're a certified heavily licensed smoothbore stunt shooter. shocked ;]
Mebbe???? whistle
NIce shooting Bigblock. I'll happily use patched round balls on my next muzzleloader hunt. Worked fine on a good mule deer last year and might have to try for a repeat next year.
Just wonderful. Congrats on makin' meat the old fashioned way.

Good Luck! smile
Congratulations on both your ML round ball kills......

LOL, I had to explain to a bermuda grass eater that because he [we] had forward facing eyes and canine teeth he was a meat eater, "dinner" has eyes on the sides of their heads.

Whaaaatt?? was all I got. crazy
LMAO, now that is funny!
Nice shooting with that sidelock.

Did you have any doubts about the PRB?
Nice and congrats! I've been shooting a 54 cal patched round ball for years with same, excellent, results. I don't cast anything anymore but have an ample supply left. I use a .530" round ball with a .015" patch, T/C Wonder wad and 100 grains of Goex 2F in an old CVA Hawken kit gun made back in the late 70's. Shot patches are perfect, just rifling marks, no tears or rips. Thing looks like an old canoe paddle, but does it shoot! Best to all in the ongoing and upcoming seasons, Dean.
Well, next year or whenever I draw another tag. They won't know what hit'em! Finally got some buckskin pants and shirt. To damn hot to show the shirt, hopefully this evening maybe.

I think thinking about smoking them to a darker color. They are not as bright looking in person. Just extra shine from the sand I was standing near.

No doubt Buudy!
Truth be known. That photo was from a newspaper shoot on muzzleloading and rendez-vous schidt. All my buds got a real big laugh on me when the writer said we "attended events called rendezvous and ate period stew!" They all wanted to know how many Kotex's it took to make a proper period stew??? (Sorry Bigblock on The thread hijack!). Please forgive.
shocked laugh grin

My .54 PRB generally kills what it hits. 230gr of lead is a lot of attitude.
