I have pretty much convinced myself to hunt muzzleloader next year but know nothing about them. If you could buy any muzzleloader either new or used and money wasn’t an issue what would you buy and why?

Encores aren’t legal here as mz’s Or I would just do that.

Here in WA we are not allowed 209’s (rule change pending) and the cap must be “exposed” to the elements. Apparently small holes or a small cut to the bolt area counts as long as it’s made that way from the factory.

I give you credit for staying in that state. Wisconsin is not the greatest but getting better all the time. That commie mentality has to be tuff to put up with.Sorry, I realize this is not dealing with your question but I just had to comment.

You need to join a Washington Muzzleloader board.

I’ve been a HuntWA member for years and the same question sis there as well. Just trying to diversify answers somewhat.

Mr. Mallard, give consideration to submitting to simpler goals.

50 yards offhand with that 7#4oz stick:

If you can't whack a deer with that, well, surrender all hope.

Inlines are queer. That doesn't mean they don't work, it's just the burden they bring.

Lord Black is easier to clean than that passing fad known as smokeless and there is no such thing as a BP substitute.

Best Regards,

D

PS: Leaf sights on long barrels are remarkably kind to old eyes.

PPS: If you just gotta shoot conicals, it can be done with a variety of the old T/C Hawken or Renegade models.

I had a lyman deerstalker with a peep sight (cap gun), Then when I went inline I bought a traditions pursuit pro. Very nice gun I don't know if its legal where you hunt. There are a lot of nice rifles. Good luck its a lot of fun working up loads and shooting. I would get an old timer to show you the ropes.........

For those of us that would never let soap and water near our muzzleloaders....
Lord Black is not easy to clean. Only one worse/dirtier is Pyrodex. But Black is all I use with my roundball long-ML.

since scopes & sabots are not legal in my state, I wouldnt even bother with an inline.

A CVA mag bolt not a bad way to go or a hammer style I have both and love the hammer best

I've got a TC Bone Collector that really shoots pretty well. I can put Barnes TZ 250 grainers into about 3" at 200 yards. The gun itself feels a little cheap, but I can't argue with the performance. One thing to note though is the raised cheek on the stock doesn't let me get my eye down low enough to use the iron sights. Since MN is now allowing scopes on ML's it's not an issue and I've only used it during the slug season up until now.
I use to use the hot water /soap method on my TC Hawkin until I had to take the rib off that is on the bottom of the barrel and found a lot of rust from when water crept in under it.

I don't have a lot of experience but what I have seen is that more money just means more bells and whistles. Cheap TRADITIONS with plastic sights, bare bones, etc shot equally well as big dollar ones.

I have a TC Hawkins, TC Black Diamond, and a TC Impact. All shoot very well. Tweaking powder amount and trying different bullets always yielded better accuracy.

Soap? You are a heretic! laugh

If you find it "not easy" you're doing it wrong.

make mine 451 thank you.
Any of the CVAs are great shooters. Mine is the Accura V2 thumbhole. Buddy shoots a Wolf, which is also very accurate and stomps deer easily to 150 yards.

I have never let soap & water touch my bore. It's what a vast majority of sidelocks users clean with.

Hey, I belong or belonged to over 20 ML messageboards. I've read a half-million posts/threads in the last 20 years. I'm forwarding to you what is being used. So now you are accusing .5M shooters of being heretics?...... hahahaha

BTW.. Dawn Detergent is the #1 most popular dish soap added to that bucket or sink-full of water.
Bucket? Sink? Have you all lost your minds?

Get off the 'puter and go shoot something.

Knight ultralight.
If I was buying new, I'd buy a Knight Ultra-Lite Western.
If used (and you can get some outstanding used rifles that are like new) I'd look at a White or a Knight MK85.

For #11 setup those rifles can't be beat for quality, functionality, and accuracy. smile
I have a T/C Black Diamond and a Traditions Ultra Light, stainless. Both shoot great and I like both a lot.
No such thing as a newer Traditions in stainless.
