Made it back to the ol’ Canta Forda Ranch about 2 this afternoon. Was sick the entire hunt. Still not hitting on all eight. But did manage to get out some. Will post a few interesting pics later. Gonna rest up a bit.

Epic event was I did manage to see a mountain lion Friday about noon!

More later!

Ha! Who you gonna send to look for me? The only "interested party" is about 9000 miles away, and she still can't tell whether we're in Winchester or Charles Town. Leesburg she knows, just not how to get there from anywhere except maybe Ashburn.

I got to the ranch about noon Thursday. Got my tent and camp squared away. Ranchowner came in from feeding and I walked over to help him set up his tent as he spends with hunt with us. Walking over to help I found this in the road.

All together I think 3 more dart points were found.

Lion story
I felt like I was coming down with something and it hit full force Friday morning. Sore throat, coughing, the works. Still got it this morn. So I felt lousy all weekend. Went out for a while with old son. Wore me out. Returned to camp and about noon. He suggested we go over to a spot and look for sheds. We got to spot at base os mountain and big box canyon. I got out of truck and saw something stand up on a rock mebbe 100-120 yds from us. There it was. Thought it was coyote first but it obviously wasnt. Hollered at son as I was priming my pan to look. It shot off into the brush. We walked over and he sprayed pretty good. You could smell him! Rancher said he had seen about a 2/3 grown cat run across road there in front of him. That description fit this cat.

We always have a show and tell gun& accoutrement session and one of the fellows brought out his 4 bore. Archaeologists son holding 4 bore.

No, I did not shoot it. With my bad shoulder I could not even hold it up (22 pounds).
He also brought a couple of pieces of local history. A percussion Jäger and a German fowler that cam from a family just down the road in Fredericksburg! Been in family since their arrival in the 1840’s!!!!
Pics to follow!

NICE! that 4 Bore is a beast, wish you could have round balled that cat.

Holding and seeing these two exquisite pieces made me feel much better. There were in impeccable condition!!!

Pigs. I did see pigs but never got a chance to draw a bead on one. Old son was good about hauling my gimp azz to spots as I was pretty frazzled. I did make it 1/2 way up Cedar Mtn. Saturday evening to watch a spot. But I was coughing so bad I’m sure I alerted a tri-county area. But all in all the scenery was great. Did get cold of an evening and in the morning. But weather was very nice.

Old son showing me where he saw pigs night before on side of the mountain.

My setting spot. That’s Packsaddle mtn. to the north on horizon.

Young son and son in law saw a garter and a yellow bellied racer, that’s all. No rattlebugs this year. Was kinda chilly for em.

No, which is nothing really out of the ordinary. Most of us haven’t killed a pig up there in years. (Some in decades!). We’ve all killed so many in the past. Most pigs I see are in lawn chairs around the firepit with a plate of fried fish and onion rings. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
25 years ago we were a lot more serious about the hunting part. This is basically a social gathering. Heck. We didn’t even have the shooting contest this year we usually do. Several of our compadres have gone to the happy hunting grounds over the years. And they are truely missed.

I've seen snakes around here when it was in the 40's with snow in protected places. No rattlers in those conditions though.

EE,

One night about 25-30 years ago we "lost" about a 4 1/2 to 5 ft rattler in camp. He was crossing the road in and we never found him!!!!! 🤣

When I was working for the Katy in and around Bastrop, I don't recall seeing a snake. It was warm weather in the Spring. Are they pretty bad around there?

I'm just going by memory, but I'm thinking your camp is 150 miles or so west and a bit north of your house. How bad are the snakes out by Fredricksburg. I'm guessing pretty bad.
Posted By: kaywoodie Re: I’m outta here!! - 03/18/19
Actually, Im only about 85-90 miles from camp to home. We used to have lots of Rattlesnakes here in the western end of the county. But fire ants did a number on em. There was also a lot of snake hunters around here. Kids dogs did manage to kill a small rattler in their backyard this past spring. And that’s only the second one killed here on the place. Ive kilt lots more coral snakes and dry land moccasins and only a few copperhewds here on the place. There used to be lots of rattlesnakes over toward Webberville. I’d run over several a week back in the early 80’s.

We have bunches of Lindheimer’s ratsnakes! They will make you hurt yourself! LOL!

Oh! Old son and I were out at the hog hunt while he was still in college. He killed a big damn rattlebug with his .62 flinter. Wasn’t far from my leg either. We were in thick brush.

And a year or so earlier on another hunt we heard a hell of a firefight back in camp. Young son and old son were on mountain trail road and happened upon a rattler. Old son had a .50 Dixie mtn rifle flinter. And young sone had a 20 gauge flint northwest fusil. They had quite a shootout! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. They was pieces of snake all over the side of the mountain.

Thanks for the info. G&F say there aren't hardly any Cottonmouths in Kansas, but that's bs. Sounds similar to around here only less Moccasins here and no Corals. We have Massagua variety rattlers right around these parts.
