Shooting my friends rifle that I built for him. Traditions St.Louis Hawken .50cal 1:48 twist. 70gr 3fg Goex, .490 cast ball .020" patch lube with an experimental patch lube, no swabbing. 50 yard 3 shot group. Average velocity of 1,579.


Earlier I was trying to shoot for groups with 60gr 3fg Swiss ( Most accurate ) and just had to laugh at the 3 1/2 - 4" groups WHILE SWABBING BETWEEN SHOTS! It got worse with no swabbing. That 3fg Swiss is a joke.


I still have to file a bit more off the front sight to bring impact up a good 3 1/2" or so, but today I just wanted to experiment with powders and figure out what she likes most. Goex was the winner by a long shot. Same load I use in my st.louis hawken and my dads hawken as well.


She also puts the 395gr lyman plains bullets that I cast, into a nice tight little cluster! Recoil isn't to bad with 70gr 3f either, but it will get your attention.

you dont have to worry about much bouncing off 4 ply tires boys. The .490 ball goes through them even at 100 yards. And if anyone asks.. Those " nice" tires in the middle are new, but turned out to be 17 years old and fully of cracks on the sidewalls when we mounted them.

Tires for a backstop is really bad idea.

no friends, tires for back stops are NOT a bad idea. Tractor trailer tires, tractor tires, HEAVY duty tires, are indeed a bad idea, yes. Soft 4 ply tires, even 10 ply make excellent back stops, or at least objects to slow the bullet down to where it can safely come to a stop in the dirt on the other side. A 395gr lyman plains bullet will shoot straight through my 10 ply tires at 100 yards.My round balls get caught up inside of them at 100 yards and makes for easy recovery. Better than letting them skip off the ground/rocks, thats for damn sure.

I am going to start collecting 4 ply tires. I probably have 500 lbs of lead in my berm. keep meaning to mine it but always have something better to do, like shoot

lol exactly. Put them 3 layers deep at least. Conicals will tear them up pretty quick unless you change your point of aim on them and rotate the tires. i have 10 ply set up on the 100 yard range but they are pretty bald. They do a great job though keeping the lead where you want it. I remember when I was a kid, the local range would set up huge mining equipment tires. Those were scary because they were so hard and thick, bullets actually would ring off of them. But these light weight automotive tires, no problem.
