I’ve often wondered if the Beale Hawken was the rifle Carson was packing on the elk hunt in the San Juans when his suffered his horse accident. He always blamed that accodent on his declining health!!!

That is a cool read! Just amazing the owner is holding Kit Carson's Hawken.

Wasn’t Carson’s last or only Hawken. The copy that PDS shows above was possibly the last. The original used to be in the Masonic Lodge there in Taos. However, I believe it’s in Santa Fe now. Enlighten us PDS!!

That was very interesting. Have heard the story but that article put it all together. Saved that pdf for future reference, thanks.
Two different rifles.
This is the rifle Carson gifted to the Masonic Lodge in Monterrey NM. It was in Taos but now resides in Santa Fe. This rifle, if my memory is correct is 53 caliber and has a 31 inch barrel. I seem to recall it was the last Hawken Carson owned. The medallion reads "Presented to Montezuma Lodge (Lodge numbers) by Brother Kit Carson May 1868"
