Looks like pretty darn good storm is going to hit the West coast of AK this wknd. Batten down the hatches. Hope folks in Nome, Kotz and other coastal communities "weather" this one ok. The Nome-Council road is gonna get destroyed (again) - 4 to 6 foot wind surge predicted.
Hurricane without the name. It’s just “Saturday”.
It has a name…Typhoon Merbok, still packing a punch…

940 mb center.
It’s the remnants of a typhoon. This far north, it has lost its tropical characteristics, and is just a very big low.

As it moves over colder waters, Merbok will begin to morph into a large, nontropical storm. Rather than being fueled by ocean heat, it will begin to derive its energy from temperature contrasts and is forecast to rapidly gain strength.
By Friday afternoon, Merbok will be a hurricane-force nontropical low barreling into the Bering Sea, with wave heights potentially topping 40 feet and widespread 80 mph gusts.
The National Weather Service in Anchorage issued a high-wind watch for the Aleutian Islands, advertising the potential for “southwest winds 50 to 70 mph with gusts up to 90 mph possible.” The strongest winds will probably occur between Attu Island and Adak.
“High winds may move loose debris, damage property, and cause power outages,” the Weather Service wrote. “Travel will be difficult.”

Storm surge now predicted at 8 - 11 feet above normal high tide.

I'd suggest seeking higher ground (hint)
Going to watch this closely, Grandson out there fishing.

TV weather guy was talking about 30'-50' waves with that surge.

Short video embedded.
Concerns lessened, anchored sheltered waters. Boat quota caught, now on chase boat and camera crew Boat for deadest catch show.
Got one of the kids out there bouncing around on a crab boat, they've been doing Pot Cod, seasons on through the 15th of October.

Last time we had communication the boat was in St.Paul.
I been piping out texts and emails since last night.

Got a reply 10 minutes ago, they just made it into Akutan, they're tied to the dock, phone systems are down but emails via satellite connections on the boat are working..

Never worried about it when it was me out there, it's different now.

The Perseverance by chance?
No, he is on the trail Blazer. He was trawl fishing on a different boat. He has worked on the Trail Blazer crabbing before.

Another concern gone, son in law off the mountain with a sheep.
Your grandson know Rob, one of the heli pilots for the show?
I don’t know all the details, I was just informed a couple of days ago when his other Grandfather was up from Cordova for his cancer treatment, I’ve been host and chauffeur when he comes up.
👍
They said it is 500 miles in diameter.

Right?

What the heck is that orange globe?!
Had that down here also. Almost a month of rain and just gloomy weather, then a sunny day. I was about ready to call 911 cuz I thought something was on fire
25 gusting to 35.

Seems like a lot of wind this past year or so.
