I left part of me on that damn mountain last year. August 13, 2009. Beautiful clear skies, no wind. Climbed from 2500 to 6060 to get to this spine. I remember it like it was yesterday. God how I wish I was going back there this year.

I wish the best of luck to all you guys going sheep hunting this fall. Please be safe, and come back with great stories and pictures to share.

I'd do it every year if I could.

Till then, we'll live vicariously through others....
Will never forget my trip in 2006. Chugach Mts., the last year of over the counter tags. 14.5" x 39 7/8". Rem. Ti, .270Win. at 125 yards.

Got him back about a month ago. He turned out better than I could have hoped for.

Beautiful ram, Joe. One of these days I'm going to come over and wrap my hands around those huge bases, if the invite still stands. He definiately has the Chugach flair and mass.

Great rams guys.... I got one of my 2 Alaskan Dalls in the Chugachs ...bases were 14 1/2 with 43 x 37 on length...was 12 year old ram...used my 270 with 130 grain Noslers...Hope this year's sheep hunters get the biggest rams on the mountains!! Good luck to all!!!
BBerg,
Good luck!! You will never forget it. Take plenty of pics.
doclee,
You are in for the experience of a lifetime. There really is nothing else like it. Take plenty of pics.
You guys are killing me...I was in the brooks 3 years ago, saw many nice rams, problem was I was sporting a caribou tag.
Thanks for the pictures, the brooks had a lasting impression on me too...I'll be back someday.

Tom,
I will be hunting with Chris Mckinnon of Bonnet Plume Outfitters.
Can somebody compare a sheep hunt in the Brooks Range to a NWT hunt?

From what I can find out from the outfitters in the Brooks they all state something like 100% opportunity. The NWTs are more $$ - is it worth it? What would push someone to choose NWTs?
Posted By: ou76 Re: Alaska and the Brooks Range - 07/28/10
I have hunted the NWT 4 times for Sheep...I got 3 rams which 2 were 40s...I saw numerous sheep during my trips to NWT...the one yeaR I had an opportunity at rams in the 37-38 inch class but we were after a ram of 40+ so I rolled the dice and came up snake eyes!! I hunted the Godlin River with Stan Simpson on classic 14 day horseback hunts...in my younger days I was able to back pack in the Alaska Range and Chugachs for Sheep and got 2 rams...1987 and 1988...I have never hunted the Brooks Range from what I have read the Brooks is an excellent sheep area..
Is the brooks range still over the counter for sheep?

How many guys do you see back pack hunting off the dalton highway?

Good luck you lucky dogs!

Gabe
Brooks range is still over the counter for every part except the Swhatka Mts in the extreme West side near Kotz. It is a registration hunt there I believe.

Many of the better areas are going to drawing permits. There are still some good ones left.

I might try sheep hunting close to the road after school during the first two weeks. There is a low outside chance but it is still and open area and I can get at least four to five hours of hunting each night if I leave right at 2:45 PM which is the end of my duty day. We will see how that strategy pays off.

I also get my labor day hunt down in Wrangells.

Best of luck to all.

Sincerely,
Thomas

Great ram and pictures. I bet that was an experience of a lifetime. I have been wanting to go to Alaska for a long time now. By the way what kind of rifle are you holding up in the picture? Remington Ti maybe. Nice looking rifle.
It's a custom 7MM-08 based on a 700 action.
I would love to hunt sheep. At the moment, it is cost prohibitive for me. I really need to do it while I'm physically able. It don't look like an old man's sport.......
I dreamed about it for 33 years, but always thought I'd never do it. Then one day I just made up my mind to DO IT!

If you really want to hunt for dalls, find a way to make it happen. You'll remember it for the rest of your life.
