Does anyone own one of the Remington 700 Alaskan All Weather rifles from the custom shop ? I was looking at one in 375 H&H and I sure would like to know if any one else has shot one and what you think of it.
I shot a buddy's APR in .375 RUM. I was impressed, but for the $1600 he spent, I could have built a better rifle...

I think the heavier calibers weigh in at 7#. I would certainly add mercury to that. I figure loaded with scope and rings it would hit the 8.5# mark pretty easy. The safari gun is about 9# plus ammo scope etc. More fun to shoot but I don't plan on buying a 375 for target shooting. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif" alt="" /> The heavier gun could be a real PITA to hump around all day. Maybe its just me but climbing the foothils covered in tundra with a 10# rock pulling at my back is not my idea of fun. Its a tuff decesion because like you mention recoil will be stout. The other gun I considered was a Winchester model 70. About $500 less but they need a bit of work. In the end I expect I would have the same amount invested. The upside to the SUCKS is the Kevlar stock and metal coating plus a much better trigger. The upside to the winnie is a far better safety plus CRF. I have the 700- AWR in 7mm Ultra mag. It shoots great. I restocked it in a McMillan sporter and converted it to BDL. I'm leaving for Alabama in the morning to try it over some green fields. I had one a few years back that I never should have let go in 300 Win. It too shot very well. IMO they are worth the money. I would guess anything over the 300 win would produce pretty significant recoil. I would go with a Stainless model 700 or the APR for the bigger caliburs. 163bc
I completely overlooked the APR. The only 375 H&H I see of standard weight in SS in the Safari rifle. That one just doesn't do it for me. No idea why. I'm a big fan of the KS Mountain rifle but man in the bigger calibers that has to be BRUTAL !
Stetson, I have the APR in 338 Ultra mag. It is a total tackdriver!! The heavier stock and steel floor plate absorb the recoil to the point that makes it pretty nice to shoot. I would also recommend a muzzle brake if you can tolerate the noise. I really don't like brakes but they sure have their advantages. I shoot a whole bunch from 300 Jarretts and 338 Ultras in a year and a brake makes it the same as a 270. I can remove them for hunting and don't even notice the recoil. I'm in the market for a 375 also and have been looking hard at the 700 LSS in 375 Ultra. 163bc

I've been to the sponge ground of AK and hunted the mtns enough to alway go with less weight rather than more. I wouldn't worry about a .375 H&H in a 7.5 or 8lb rifle at all. That's cupboard full, scoped and slung.
I never saw a listing for a 375 LSS on the Remington site. I guess I'll have to look again. I have had such great great luck with SUCKS over the others that I'm willing to do push feed. If the AWR and the KS MTN rifle are the same weight I lean towards the MTN rifle as it already has a sweet stock on it. The APR is just not me. If I'm going to tote the weight I want real wood. That's just a real PITA trying not to scratch it, wet weather etc. Looking for a shooter here. The kind I can crawl through the mud and use to break a fall with and not cry the blues because I just put a scratch on my stock.
I looked again and the only LSS I see is a MTN rifle but not in 375. Nice lookin gun for the $$$.
I have a somewhat similar rifle, a 376 Steyr Scout. The 376 Steyr is maybe 100fps or so slower with the same bullets as an H&H but the Scout is in the 6 1/2 or so lb range. Recoil will get you attention for sure but won't kill you. To me it feels maybe a little less than my 416 Remington M-70, a Lott less than my 458 Lotts, and more than a normal weight 375 H&H.
It's not a gun for plinking with a bunch, but it's short barrel and quick handling would probably be the gun I'd want in my hands if I was going into thick stuff after something nasty. I think that 270gr A-Frames at 2500fps (18 1/2" barrel) would be enough for most growlies if put in the right place. The Scouts are certainly a different style of rifle than the Remington but might be a viable choice. I've seen several in the $1000 range in 376..............DJ
Thanx for the input. I really want a gun that's going to do dual service for AK and Africa. I can afford to go hunting or buy guns but not both ! LOL If it wasn't for the African standard I'd be looking at less gun.
I might consider a CRF for that extra confidence factor.
Buy it, you will love it. Don't worry about the light weight. My unscientific observation is that the rifles with the kevelar stocks commit less felt recoil than the denser wood or wood laminate alternatives. However, if you are recoil sensitive, make sure the length of pull is adjusted to your physical dimensions. A 0.5 inch really does make a big difference.
As a side note. . .a few years ago I took three young men, my two sons and one of their buddies, to Tanzania to hunt buffalo and miscellaneous stuff. We took three .375 H&H magnums from the Remington custom shop. I had the guys burn up the barrels before we left. All three were tack drivers, and all three performed flawlessly in the field.
I have a 700 KS from the custom shop, the fore runner of the AWR( Alaska Wilderness Rifle). Mine is in .338. It is a joy to carry, handles like lightning with a Leupold 1.75x6.
Recoil? The straight foam core kevlar wrapped stock seems to soak up most of the recoil. Buy the rifle. You will really like it.
That's the answear I was lookin for ! I have a KS MTN rifle from the custom shop in 270. It's the best shooting lightest carrying gun I've ever had. Drops anything you can feed it under .80 off a bench at 100 yards.

I played with a Remington Custom Shop Kevlar Stocked 416 Remington Mag. It was flat nasty to shoot compared with a 1/2 dozen or so other 416's I've shot including my Wood stocked Winchester M-70 shot with the same loads on the same day. I'll agree that at the same weight and fit a good fiberglass/kevlar stock will have less apparent recoil but in some calibers there is more than enough to go around. Stock fit is still important in shooting comfort, very important in boomers. YMMV with the Remingtons.........DJ

I had a Remington 375 Ultra Mag. Off the shelf, I found the recoil to be too much. So I put a Kickeez (sorbothane) recoil pad on it and I was amazed at the improvement. I have put the Kickeez on several other big bore rifles and have been exceptionally pleased. I have been told, but have not yet tested one, that the Limbsaver is also a great pad.
I also put a C&H Mercury Recoil Suppressor in the stock and was pleased by the additional recoil control. It does add a little more weight to the stock, but after you get through on the bench, you can take it out for field use.
By the way, I sold the .375 Ultra Mag to a friend, and I bought a Win Model 70 Stainless Synthetic in 375 H&H in anticipation of an Africa trip. If you get to Africa and need ammo, the 375 H&H is readily available in most camps. At any rate, I wanted to tell you that I had lots of trouble getting the Winchester to shoot a decent group. I found that the stock was cracked around the front lug on the inside where you couldn't see it (brand new rifle). Since I was going to bed it anyway, I went ahead with a pillar bedding and it solved the problems.

A true dangerous game rifle is a mission I take with great reflection, whose cost and time spent waiting don't bother me. My goal is to have a good, solid working rifle that I can DEPEND ON.
I wouldn't want one for a DG rifle, which I take that in 375 you are going to use it on the big bears. Instead, I want a controlled-feed, Mauser-type action only that's been expertly tuned and adjusted by a real-live riflesmith who actually knows what he's doing --with a proven record.
That AWR you're considering has an action is vulnerable to dust contamination and feeding problems, plus the brazed-on bolt handle has been know to pop off.
Good, workable guns and good value are the CZ, Ruger, and Model 70. Get any of these prudently and effectively tuned and adjusted and you've got yourself a REAL RIFLE. jorge
