Just reading the story online that Bob Harte pasted away this week, Bob was one of my favorites on that show. The report did not say what caused his death but he had been battling cancer for several years.
It was also noted that Preston Roberts of Mountain men also passed away as a result of an inoperable liver tumor.
Damn I really liked him sad day for sure.. he truly lived the Alaskan dream that many of us want to live..

I found it quite painful to watch his last struggles. Eventually, we must all admit that we can't quite do it anymore. He did fight to the end, and I can not imagine the memories beautiful days and events that he's taken with him. Rest in peace.

He has children, and according to the show, the rpermits are still valid till the death of his children.

You're correct, but I don't see any other family utilizing it. For all intents and purposes that permit is gone.
hikerbum, if you would like an interesting as well as educational read, check out "Land Gone Lonesome" by Dan O'Neill. It's about the formation of the Yukon Charley National Park which is just south of ANWR. It's a good illustration of the attitude of our Fed Gov towards it's citizens that live "out". The history of the area is also interesting if you're into that kind of stuff. Lots of folks kicked out of their homes that were subsequently burned.
He lead the life he want. Not many can say that. RIP

yeah, I really like the episodes with Bob in it. What a life he must have led. I envy people like him. He did it his way.
Sad that he was so "young" to die but he packed more into his years than some could fit into 4 lifetimes. As mentioned he lived life on his terms and I pray that he's resting peacefully on the endless tundra in the sky.
Yup ...buddy of mine who's passed, kids never go to his place near the novie....
That's a shame because it'll be lost forever. I know it's important for the old timers to pass that down and a disappointment when they move to town, knowing that they'll be lost to the lights.
Heimo has often expressed how much that mattered to him.

The first couple episodes I didn't care for him, but as you say in the later episodes he became very thoughtful in his comments and was enjoyable...almost inspirational to watch
Saw the dedication to Preston the other night, very sorry to hear about Bob also, two good representatives of the things many of us value. R.I.P. Preston and Bob.

Preston was a good guy. Without him I don't know how anyone could stand Eustice by himself. A shame.
That said about the best show on the air in our opinion (Carolyn and I) is Last Alaskans. And we enjoyed Bob and family including Ruger VERY much.

Does anyone remember what the name of the show Eustace and Preston were on before Mountain Men?
It was a prepper/survivalist show (not Preppers) It showed them with the school they had.
A lot of the people on The Last Alaskans, Life Below Zero and Yukon Men were first introduced on the show Flying Wild Alaska.
Sue was a regular and Bob made a appearance. The Hailstone's from Life Below Zero were on it. Charley, Stan or James from Yukon Men were there to great the plane when it came into Tanana.
On a side note....are there more episodes of LastAlaskans planned?

As far as Preston goes, he made Eustace way more tolerable. I prefer several others on the Mountainman than Eustace. Mostly the guys in Alaska and Montana.
I was envious they got to live life on their own terms. RIP
Kinda hard to say, some get morose, some don't I guess. My dad did at the end, and it was a long year or so. I NEVER expected Dad to get that way. So I won't hold that against Bob.
We like Heimo the most too.

He might have been the only redeeming feature of that whole series. Eustace and the rest of the gallery of so-called mountain men are a pathetic lot.
I went to Bob's funeral. It was a wonderful gathering of the real people of the Bush. I met his stepson Traver who will be teaching Social Studies between my sister and I at West Valley High School. He is a great guy and he MC'ed the funeral. He is extremely high energy and Bob had nicknamed him "Twitch". I think Charlie Jagow is going to play a bigger role in the show this season. I think that Traver is going to continue to use the cabin as he has moved up to Fairbanks from Anchorage. I am just happy that I have another teacher to work with who isn't a communist. He going through the same thing that I am and that is going to be helpful. You can bet your guns that any liberal teacher who wants to give him crap as a new teacher is going to face my unadulterated fury. Traver will do well.
Bob had a bucket list that he worked to finish before he checked in. He had a homemade camper that he took down to Arizona that he lost on the way. He went back to get it and there was nothing left. The day before he died Traver and Tallicia called all of his friends together and had a bonfire with him. He thanked everybody who was his friend and then died the next day.
RIP Bob....gone to the happy hunting ground...

Sad to hear. Really seemed like a couple of good old boys. Enjoyed watching both of them and what they added to each show. I met up with Heimo in 2011 on my way through Fort Yukon. I thought that was pretty neat because I knew about him from a previous trip.

Eustace doesn't seem like much of a mountain man or outdoorsman to me. More of a farmer if you ask me. Seen him hunt and shoot a bit and he doesn't impress as being terribly good/knowledgeable. Most of what he does on the show is stuff you can see Amish farmers doing in their daily, routine farm chores.

I'm really glad that there is someone in the family interested in utilizing his cabin. With the schedule of a teacher, he might just be able to actually spend some real time out there. In the summers anyway. The bonfire sounds like a really great gathering for him and a nice opportunity for a last visit. I hope I'm that fortunate when my quarter runs out.

The first episode that I watched of TLA's was Bob packing up to leave due to his illness. Now I watch it anytime I can catch it.
Eustace is a different animal for sure, but he is doing it his way I'll give him that. Preston sure made him a bit more tolerable.
When he left the show last season and said he was heading south to heal up, I knew it wouldn't end the way we were all hoping. Pretty sad deal, he was a strange cat but he was one of my favorites on the show next to Heimo. RIP Bob Harte.

My favorites too. Marty is for sure the real McCoy. Tom and Rich seem to get too much input from the producers in their scripts.

You recommended Heimo's book. I accidentally ordered A Land Gone Lonesome. I have read Heimo's book a couple years ago. The book that I ordered by Dan O'Neill is a journal written in the early 2000 time frame He kinda starts in Dawson and follows the Yukon and searches the old folks, cabins, and towns. Not a bad read.
My Alaskan buddy has told me to read The Spaces Between” by Doug Capra. Said it is about the Kenai Peninsula.
My sister is supposed to send me a link to a map of where we built an AFrame cabin close to the river "Kenai" out of Soldotna. We hope to venture up that way next summer.

A great book about Alaska in the 70s-80s is John McPhee's Coming Into The Country. The last section, most of the book, is about some residents of the then brand new Yukon-Charley and some who lived in/around Eagle.
