I was looking at a bolt rifle on guns international web site was about to pull the trigger when shop/owner emailed me the S&H would be $150.00 from Illinois to Alaska seems double what it should be. Is it about right or not, maybe I am out of touch?

He's ass raping you. That's more like triple what USPS should be.

Might be right for 2nd day air Fed ex or UPS, but even that seems pretty stiff as a rifle is 10 or so pounds

$45 to $65 USPS priority.
Fedex and UPS will be nearly double.
$150? See 458’s comment above.
For long guns, USPS really is the cheapest coming up here, despite my general disdain for the entity.

As an FFL, almost all of the guns I have bought outside AK for the last several years came from either the manufacturer or Whiitaker's. Derrick ships to AK for free...

Not thinking you are touching strongly enough on the sphincter aspect...

Thanks
That’s what I was thinking. Problem is I can’t just go to Whitaker’s or Buds and find the same gun. I am looking at a 7x57 in a 98 mauser in my price range. (Cheap) Bummer if I have to pass on this rifle because of this BS.
Thanks again for all the help.

I want a 7x57 in a bad way.
Insurance is a factor, beside the actual shipping price. I USPS a rifle to New York a couple weeks ago. Price of Priority mail and insurance was $86.50+the hardcase and box.

98s in 7x57 are a long way from rare...

Yup, but they make their money off the little people and pass the savings on to Amazon.
I know with UPS if they use a box that is slightly larger than necessary it makes the price about double. There is one dealer who will NOT use smaller boxes and insists upon using UPS, so I gotta really want what he has bad to pull the trigger.

I just shipped a $900.00 model 70 to Alaska for $62.00 insured by USPS Priority Mail...

I think I paid $28 to ship myself a rifle from Kotzebue to Denver last spring, including insurance for $900. Regular PP . Took a couple weeks IIRC. FFL dealer fees and faster delivery will increase that of course. Fed EX and UPS fees are rapacious.

Even so, $150 seems excessive.

I think it is cheaper (subsidized) to ship things out of Alaska, than to Alaska as well. Could be wrong...

A USPS shipment I got from NY last summer had a bunch of guns in two boxes and was well under $150, IIRC.

I know I am getting screwed because the rifle is only $400.00 for replacement cost.. So insurance can't be much.

What is special about the particular 7x57 you are looking at?
Posted By: ErichTheRed Re: Buying rifle lower 48 - 01/17/19
Mainly it is in the range that I want to spend.
