Just had a plane go down in front of Metlakatla. Pilot and one passenger on board. Saw a picture of it floating upside down in the water. No other info right now.
Sad to hear...
Hope pilot and passenger(s) ok.
That will leave a mark...
Crash
Pulled this off the KRBD FM facebook page...….

UPDATE from the Ketchikan Gateway Borough's information center: A pilot and a single passenger are dead after a Taquan Beaver floatplane crashed in Metlatkatla Harbor this afternoon at approximately 4 p.m. There were no other individuals on board the aircraft.
The circumstances of the crash are not being released at this time. The names of the deceased will not be released until next of kin have been notified. Fifteen members of the Metlakatla Volunteer Fire Department responded to the crash. A seine boat was first on scene. Two medics were dispatched on board two Coast Guard Station Ketchikan 45-foot Response Boats. Air Station Sitka dispatched one Jayhawk Helicopter, which has since been rescinded to Sitka. The Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad dispatched a 26-foot rescue boat at 4:56 p.m. with eight volunteers.
Both individuals were brought to the Annette Island Service Unit. Good Samaritans have the aircraft in tow and are bringing the Beaver to the beach until it can be secured.

Sad, sad deal.

Wow. Rough start this year. Condolences to the family.
I do not remember the Metlatkatla harbor, but saw enough close calls in the Kodiak Harbor between float planes and boats to wonder if there is any connection.

Try watching the "traffic" on Lake Union (Seattle) sometime.

Seaplanes on Lake Union?

Sad deal. A good friend of ours flies for them during the summer and has for years. He’s a 747 captain that grew up there. My prayers for all involved.

Kenmore air has a seaplane “base” on Lake Union. It’s a busy lake in the summer.

That would most likely be Kenmore Air, they have over 50 float planes flying daily in that area.
They have been around since the 40's.

That is also where many Alaskans take their Beaver's and Otter's for rebuilds and repaired.
Kenmore Air's de Havilland shop has probably the best reputation of any de Havilland shop in the country.

They are on the north end of Lake Washington.

I'm surprised there are any Beavers or Otter left in the world as many as seem to crash every year...

Sure seems like it!

Just saw this, very curious as to the cause...
https://www.ktuu.com/content/news/N...tlakatla-floatplane-crash-510241491.html

Details about the victims... also says a float caught and the plane cartwheels. A 10 knot wind at the time could have hidden something big or made something big enough to catch a toe.
Tv reported swells, but later pics showed pretty flat on the day of the crash.

Quite a few folks from AK get the "pleasure" of visiting "Pill Hill", which kind of overlooks Lake Union. Fred Hutch, SCCA, Virginia Mason, Swedish, et. al. are in the vicinity. I've had the unfortunate "pleasure" of visiting a few of those places.

Seattle is a very good place for quality medical care and the U of W is very reputable institution of higher learning. I try to go to a Huskies game every year.

Sure, Seattle has changed a lot (not so much for the better) and I sure wouldn't want to live there, but it is tolerable for short periods. To each his own . . . .
Heard some unsettling information about this crash today... from several sources so I suspect it is true.

The pilot had about 25 hours in a float plane, total... he should never have been flying passengers. He was legal to fly them, but he should have been flying freight, not people until he had a better grasp of floats on saltwater...
