Received my copies of II and III today! Time to put the little lady on the ignore list.......... it’s all John’s fault.

We have been VERY busy getting the pretty long list of pre-orders on the way--which is why I hadn't announced anything as soon as the books arrived: We wanted to "catch up"!

Glad to know they are showing up quickly, after the USPS "summer vacation." It looks like they're back on their previous schedule, which was 3-5 business days delivery of media-mail packages.

Thanks to all who have ordered!

Just got mine yesterday, and went straight to the article about modern loads in the 7x57 (duh). The rest of the book will be read one chapter in the evening, just before lights out. I got to make it last till Gack IV comes out.

BTW, John, that's a fine looking rifle leaning against that moose.

Have faith. Mine just got here today and, if it can get past the New Orleans logjam, anything is possible.

The Vanguard stock I ordered from Weatherby has been sitting, apparently buried in a container of Republican mail-in ballots, in Greensboro, NC since the 12th.

Yes, I would like some cheese with my whine.

Hey John...just finished chapter 19..expansion of hunting bullets...worth the cost of the book in it`s own right. Anyway that chapter could be incorporated into Hunter Safety programs as required reading? Excellent info. Maybe you could start the ball rolling in Mt. by donating the chapter to them. Start the new hunters off with a proven example of how bullets really work.
Looking forward to more good things to come..

It was warm out last evening, so my usual straight whisky and full bodied cigar were out. Cutty and Soda on the rocks and a mild Montecristo White filled in quite nicely.

Just placed my international order, to take advantage of Eileens sale on
Upland bird cooking & Shotguns for Wingshooting.

Will advise about structural damage to my credit wrt shipping charges.

If there’s a GAck IV, we have to talk seriously about an e format volume !

I have explained here why we don't do e-versions of our books. There are two ways to do it: One is easily pirated, and the other tends to garble numbers/data, which doesn't work with handloading or game recipes.

I can attest to that. I tried an ebook version of a 303 British book, and the columns were skewed. It turned out bad, so I yanked it and returned to paper.

Paper needs no Internet connection, or tablet/laptop. No power source either. You can read a book comfortably, while sitting on the privy at moose camp! laugh

Posted By: GrimJim Re: Gun Gack III - 09/25/20
I spent the afternoon at the rifle range today. I shot 5-shot and 3-shot groups at 100 yards. I loaded 50 rounds yesterday and tried them in the two rifles that are candidates for taking hunting in November. When I returned home Gun Gack III was waiting for me. I found myself nodding along with the chapter on rifle accuracy and the one on shooting at 100 yards. I was disappointed with one rifle but after reading GGIII, I realized that 5 shots into 1.1" was probably pretty good. I also was reminded that the other rifle probably would not shoot 5 shots into 0.32 inches as it did three shots. I don't know if it or I consistently shoot that well because I stopped after the first group-three shots touching one inch high at 100 yards-and declared victory. Now all I have to do is not mess with it for 6 weeks. What I need is an article on how not to mess with things that are where I want them.

Alvaro,

Thanks for the report! Hope you like it.
Posted By: RevMike Re: Gun Gack III - 10/02/20
Hey John:

Like everyone else I'm really enjoying Gack III. I have a quick question, though. On page 80 there's a picture of a person kneeling beside an antelope, and from the bolt release it looks like the rifle - or at least the action - is by the late Montana Rifle Company. But I would swear that the barrel has a step in it, which is not something that MRC ever did to my knowledge. Can you shed any light on it?

Once again, thanks for all you do for us.
Posted By: Mule Deer Re: Gun Gack III - 10/03/20
Mike,

Yeah, now that you pointed it out, it does look like that.

But I looked at the original digital color photo closely (meaning I "blew" it up on my computer screen) and the barrel has a camo finish--which isn't visible in the black-and-white conversion. The "step" is actually a pale line in the camo.

I concede defeat to media rate shipping. i ordered in good time, hoped to give it as a birthday present to family member, and buy my copy shortly thereafter. No Book still don't have one, I have had bigger, and more costly disappointments from USPS....., frantic scramble to find substitute gift...... ( really wasn't necessary , I told them he came home to the ranch to shoot doves. 4 hunts, 4 limits handled the gift in my mind.....)
Can I just call , give a credit card, and pay for FIRST class postage, and hope to get one....
I'm not a kid needing instant gratification, but at age 70 , I am interested in reading it before I pass.
Posted By: Mule Deer Re: Gun Gack III - 10/06/20
Sorry to hear about that. We generally have had media-rate books show up in West Texas in a few days, including several recently. But Eileen needs to your real name to track down the problem, or correct it. You can call 406-521-0273 or e-mail [email protected].
Posted By: Mule Deer Re: Gun Gack III - 10/06/20
mel5141,

So did you contact Eileen? We've only had about half a dozen orders not show up in over a decade of mailing tens of thousands of books--and her policy (the website is her company) is to ship another book when one fails to arrive. But she can't do that unless you tell her. (Usually the original order eventually shows up--once in a great while a book gets caught in what we call the Denver Vortex, where it stays for up to a month before finally spinning out of the trap. In that case you can keep it too.)
Posted By: Steve Redgwell Re: Gun Gack III - 10/06/20
I know this doesn't help things John, but you are not alone. I have had more books disappear since COVID 19 started. I am not sure why. The only thing I do know is that the books were in the custody of the post office, a branch of the federal government. And as we all know, the government does not make mistakes. crazy So...what happened to them?

Posted By: Mule Deer Re: Gun Gack III - 10/07/20
This is the first one that disappeared of ours--though some were delayed while the USPS was taking it's "summer vacation," when sorting machines were being removed from USPS offices.

What's interesting about mel5141's post is that he has STILL not contacted Eileen (who is know for good customer service), and in fact hasn't even logged onto the Campfire since his post. Her phone # and e-mail address are right at the top of the www.riflesandrecipes.com home page, if some problem occurs--but instead he chose to whine here.
Posted By: Steve Redgwell Re: Gun Gack III - 10/07/20
I wouldn't worry about him, John. He's likely a heckler. If he has a legitimate problem, he knows what to do.
Posted By: Mule Deer Re: Gun Gack III - 10/07/20
Thanks Steve. Was never worried, but am ticked off. It's easy enough to contact Eileen and correct the problem.

If he'd called to order the book and mentioned it was a time-related gift, she would have suggested priority mail rather than media mail. But media mail has been working well again lately.

Mel just PM'd me. There were extenuating circumstances on his side, the reason he did not respond here, and everything is OK.
Posted By: mel5141 Re: Gun Gack III - 10/07/20
Mr. Barsness, I have just sent you a PM . I hope this is a satisfactory reply...... If it is not fully explanatory, I will forward a personal cell phone via PM . Due to physical limitations, I talk much better than I type. ....... I am not very smart, but sparring with a professional wordsmith on a "net" site is a battle I'll likely not prevail in. I think I have explained in the PM that our "commerce" is satisfactorily concluded.

As to the other rather derogatory insults slung by so freely by Mr. Redgwell...... Heckler, hardly I have so much more to do......

Mr. Wam???? or whatever your name is??? Little bitches? Whiny........ I hope I would not convey that impression, I don't know you , but I would hardly take it upon myself to assassinate your character in print, My post was not about you, but rather a comment on the lack of service available from the USPS. Why do you choose to insult me when you don't know me? Would you do the same in person????? Oh, I forgot, it is the internet.....

Now Mr. WAM, in the interest of transparency, my name is Paul Melton....... Whiney??? I think you will have to hunt hard to find anyone in the Sporting or Business world that would describe me as such.
i am sure your 2386 post here are your total joy in life........You will have to live a HELL of a life to have been to the places I have been and do the things I have done.......
I guess....About enough campfire for me , forever.
Best regards,

Once Eileen had Mel's name, she tracked the package:

It was delivered to his PO on September 23, but he had a hold on his mail delivery. Supposedly it was delivered yesterday, apparently after theh old was lifted. PM'd Mel to confirm whether he got it.

Posted By: Mule Deer Re: Gun Gack III - 10/08/20
In general the USPS has done a very good job with our media-mailing of hundreds of copies of GG3 in the past month (and a bunch of our other books--Eileen's game cookbooks have been heading out regularly as well), and so far when customers haven't received them within the 5-7 workdays the USPS predicts for media mail it's not because the book(s) didn't arrive at their PO in the predicted time. Mel's book, for instance, was mailed on Wednesday, September 9, and made it to his PO in Texas in five working days.

Another customer e-mailed Eileen today, saying his hadn't shown up either. He pre-ordered in August, and like almost all the pre-orders it was mailed from September 9th to 11th. Eileen checked the tracking # and it also made it to his PO in the 5-7 working days--but has been sitting in a locker there, apparently because his PO box wasn't quite large enough for it. Dunno if his PO failed to inform him--we have the same locker-delivery now and then, and they leave a locker key in our box--but that can happen, though in my experience very rarely.
Posted By: Mule Deer Re: Gun Gack III - 10/10/20
As noted earlier, Eileen advises that any book that HAS to be there by a certain date should go priority mail. Several people have asked about how much more that costs.

Since media-mail averages about three bucks per book, the extra cost for priority varies from about $4 in nearby states to as much as $7 in Alaska. But if somebody orders two books, the extra cost per book is about half as much.

Copies keep heading out the door--along with the first two GUN GACKS. In fact we had to reprint GG1 for the 6th or 7th time this year, and a lot of folks are buying Eileen's game cookbooks as well.
