It's not mine, but it's still special. Oddly, the only time that Canadians ever got his birthday off - IOW, a holiday - was 1967. We didn't have to go to school in the middle of a blizzard. laugh

For anyone who doesn't recognize this guy, he was a Scottish immigrant who travelled with his family to Upper Canada (Ontario). Sadly, he decided to become a lawyer, and spoke funny, and to add insult to injury, became a politician (quelle surprise!). He was involved with the creation of a confederation, the Dominion of Canada.

Becoming a dominion changed the status of several regions of Canada. No longer would the colonies be called colonies - except by the British and most of the rest of the world. What was formerly Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada (Upper and Lower) became the Dominion of Canada.

The original four provinces were Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. Others joined, with the latest territory, Nunavut, in 1999. Nunavut separated from the North West Territories in a bloodless, peaceful maneuver which means, as of 2011, we now have 10 provinces and three territories.

It's ma birthday!

Here's the late Stompin' Tom Connors and K.D. Lang singing another Canada song called...CANADA (quelle surprise, encore...) And yes, this song is an embarrassment to us.

I presume that's John Macdonald.
I had a professor from Canada in a political science course at Vanderbilt in the 60s who believed Americans needed to know more about Canada so we got a semester worth during an international relations course...

I think 11 Jan. Is a good day for a birthday.

I agree, it is. Has been for many years.
Having grown up on the border in the days of broadcast tv, when 2 of the 3 stations we could get were Canadian, when all but one of the radio stations we could get were Canadian, when the only Chinese restaurant within 100 miles was in Canada, when the parents of all the other kids were immigrants from Canada..... yeah, I know who Sir John A MacDonald was.
He may have been the father of the Dominion but any statues will probably be coming down because he neglected to suck up to indigenous peoples (AKA Indians) sufficiently. GD
