We're getting close to sending this book to the printer, probably in the next week or so. Eileen will have the words/pages set up this week, and then we just have to add the photos, which have already been selected.

One thing we're running into which needs to be mentioned. The title is Gun Gack IV, the Little Book of Rifle Handloads That Work. It's about loads I've found to shoot accurately in more than one rifle of a certain chambering over the years, sometimes a LOT of rifles. There are 50 cartridges included, ranging from around 20 very popular rounds down to a handful of rare ones. Each chapter is a short essay followed by a load chart.

We knew it would be a smaller than the previous three BIG Gun Gack books, which are about the size of a Gun Digest Annual, around 400 pages in the same 8-1/2 by 11-inch format. This book will be a lot smaller, around 250 pages in a 6x9 inch format--but something happened that we didn't anticipate: Book publishing has been affected, like everything else, by the recent supply-chain/inflation problems. We found this out partly through ordering another printing our first RIFLE LOONY NEWS book. It turned out the company didn't have enough paper on hand for the entire printing, so shipped us 25 copies to get by on while they waited for another paper shipment.

Of course, paper costs more now, and so does shipping. We won't know exactly what the price will be until the books arrive, due to both the final printing and shipping costs not being available until then. As a result, even though the book will indeed be smaller than the BIG GACK books, the price may be similar. Oh, and one other thing that's going up, naturally, is postage rates, which will apparently rise before the books arrive. But we'll provide the best deal possible--and right now fuel prices are starting to drop a little...

Let me know if you want to be put on the pre-publication list, which means when the books show up I'll PM everybody and let you know they're here. As always, the price on www.riflesandrecipes.com will include media-mail shipping in the U.S., and the books can be ordered through the site--or if you prefer ordering from an actual human, by phoning 406-521-0273.

Thanks,
John

Have you given any thought to offering a digital format book? I have no idea what that encompasses, but it would help with the paper and mailing costs.

Manny,

Yes, we have. Unfortunately, the two methods of digital publishing have problems. One method allows the work to be easily pirated, and the other method tends to mangle numbers--which is a BIG problem with handloading books, as well as the cookbooks Eileen writes.

However, we may eventually digitally publish some other books.

MD I couldn’t help but notice that Chapter 28 was Not listed, and also coincidentally that the 280 Rem / 7mm Express was dropped from the original list. Hmmm, Adding the 7 mm Saum perhaps
This Topic probably deserves its own small book to adequately cover the subtleties revealed.
Also, glad to see coverage of the .338 ‘06

John, I would like to get one.

Thanks, guys!

Should also note that this is not a "new list." It's the same as the one I posted about a while back, but we're adding to it now that publication-time is closer.

338Rules, I probably accidentally left Chapter 28 .280 Remington off the chapters because the list was too long to copy-and-paste in one batch. Thanks for the catch--I fixed the post.
I would love to have one sir!

MD Thanks for Clearing Up that Mystery !

At first I thought there was some sort of conspiracy, to the effect that there were no general loads that shot well in the 280 . Only rifle specific tailored hand loads, Yikes.

Resting easier until Gack IV publication is in hand.

Please add me to the list! One of my favorite MD articles is “Loads that work”. I saw it published in Handloader (if I remember correctly) and it has a permanent place on my reloading bench for reference. It was updated I think years later and I have that article on my bench as well. Great info!
I need to amend John's announcement of his new book, Gun Gack 4. I won't have it ready for the printer until August 1 at the earliest. Then it's a 4 to 6-week process of back and forth with the printer to get everything right, and a week to ship it. That's a perfect-world estimate. And I won't have a price for the book until I send it to the printer. (Paper costs are going up, paper supplies even costing delays, postal costs are going up later this month, and shipping it to us is costing more, all things out of our control.) However, once that's done, I'll give my tech guy everything he needs to set up a page for the book, so you all can pre-order.
That's probably more than you wanted to know about the printing world.
One more thing. I'm setting the book up right now in InDesign, so we can give it to a couple of our rifle loony friends to fact check the data, and me to read and edit for typos etc. So if you still would like to be on "The List' just tell John right here, email me at [email protected] or text me @ 406-521-0273. I love to talk on the phone with anyone who'll give me respite from the computer, but it's time away from getting the book ready. If you're not comfortable with computers and texting, just give me a call. I get it.

Keep cool everyone. Summer heat is a sign hunting season is just around the corner!

Go ahead and add me to the list. I'm sure it will be worth the wait. Counted about 13 cartridges that I either own or reload for a friend. Thanks for the update; based on initial pre-publication interest this one looks like a good seller.

I always try to write about a variety of rifle/handloading subjects, so tried to provide info on most popular/standard rounds, plus some more obscure ones--which tend to result in more experimentation.

I assume its you who called the first three the Trilogy of Gack when talking to her on the phone.

Looking forward to it even if the 6mm Rem. didn't make it in. Per an inline conversation we had here a while back I heard it was under consideration. I had mentioned that someone would be whining about it if it wasn't in there, so let me be the first official whiner, (still want a copy, though).

i migt have missd this answer ? how soon will this new book be out ? thanks ,Pete53
Maybe September, but more likely October.

It's hard to tell, partly because as I noted in an earlier post, "supply-chain" problems are also hitting the printing industry. When we recently reprinted the RIFLE LOONY NEWS, THE FIRST FIVE YEARS, the printing company we used didn't have enough paper for the number of books we ordered. So they printed and and mailed 25 to get us by until their next paper shipment arrived.

All of which is also part of the reason we won't let everybody on the list know UNTIL the books actually show up here. Autumn is also when the vast majority of books are sold in the U.S.

John

How do I aquire this?
You'll be able to order it when copies arrive from the printer. At that point we'll let everybody on the list know the copies have arrived, what the price is, and how to order--which can be done either through our website, www.riflesandrecipes.com, or by phoning 406-521-0273. (Or at least that's how most people order. A few still snail-mail a check!)

Right now we're still putting the book together. It's all written, and the photos have been selected, but Eileen needs to put it together on her computer, ready to be printed. We hope to e-mail it to the printer by mid-August--and it usually takes about six weeks for the printing a shipping, so the copies should be here in late September or early October. We're thinking probably October, due to the present supply-chain problems, but it might be earlier.

We put together a pre-publication list like this for several reasons, not least being some idea of how many people are interested, which provides an idea of how many copies to print. But it also gives the folks who are really interested the first chance to order--and receive their copy.

About 75-80% of the books sold in the U.S. each year are sold in November and December, obviously due to Christmas. When that big push starts it takes longer for books to be delivered, so we try to deliver them earlier and quicker to those customers who really want one.
This can be handy for me because I've just picked up one new Speer load manual and probably need a few more handbooks. I ve got the Lyman no47 and the Cast Bullet Handbook and old lyman and speer manuals from way back. I lost my access to manuals and equipment when my shooting partner died awhile back.
Please add me to the list

Hey John, I've been offline this summer and just found this thread. I believe I am already on the list but if not please put me on it!

Thanks
Scott
Scott,

Your memory is good: You are indeed already on the list!

We've had some minor delays in getting the book to the printer, but still plan on it appearing during October at the latest.

John
John, I would love to purchase a copy.
Added your name, thanks!
Thanks to a couple of guys for their PMs. Am all caught up again!

Eileen and I spent a couple hours today working on the printer's computer copy. Still hoping to have copies by around October 1st, but it may be a week or two later.

John
Looking. Forward!
Thanks!

We will probably be e-mailing it to the printer very soon. Right now we're finishing up the latest edition of RIFLE LOONY NEWS, so Eileen can send it to our subscribers tomorrow.
John,
Please add me to the list of it is not too late.
John,

Please add me to the list.

Thanks
You're tantalizing us by mentioning a sale in the Rifle Loony News mailing and not yet offering Gun Gack IV for order.

No reason or need to add me to the PM list - I have everything on the Rifles and Handloading section and most of Hunting Adventure and much of Cookbooks despite having my meals brought around in styrofoam these days; to which add such things as magazine articles reminiscent of Robert Ruark's Old Man and the Boy with tales of taking a '97 after birds - I'll be ordering as soon without a PM as with.

Although I've seen past iterations of loads that work in books and on Loaddata I'm hoping for something new on the .30-40. I suppose because in the Krag any .30-40 load would be the equivalent of a drastically reduced load in other military cartridges even of the era such as the .303 Brit I'm finding nothing for heavy bullets with powders newer than 4350 and Reloader 15.
Clark,

Thanks for buying the books you mention!

But apparently you mis-read the announcement in RLN: The book hasn't even appeared yet, and we won't know exactly when it will appear or the price until we receive copies, probably in October.

The .30-40 and .303 chapters mention how much handloading for both rounds is similar. While both H4350 and IMR4350 appear frequently, there are also loads using Accurate 2015, H414, IMR3031, Ramshot Big Game, Varget, and VV N540.
Have added all the names of Campfire members who PM'd me in the past few days.

Thanks,
John

Please add me to the list.
Thanks, guys. Have you all on the list.

We're getting very close to sending the book to the printer, mostly just rechecking details. Looks like we'll probably have copies in early October--if the printer doesn't run into supply-chain problems.
John,
If it's not too late, please add me to the list. Thanks!

Any info on release date? I have not read back through the thread. Just thought about it today so I thought I might better check.
We have had a few delays in getting it ready for the printer, due to unforeseen circumstances, but Eileen plans to e-mail it to them this week--and we usually have copies delivered about six weeks after that. So if everything goes as planned, mid-October.
Thanks for the update JB!
You're welcome!

Still on schedule right now. We're going to check everything one more time and zap it to the printer.
Hopefully not too many Enduron loads in there. grin
Good one, Mathman. That was funny!

That stated, if there are many Enduron loads in the book it wouldn't bother me too much. The historical data could maybe be useful to some. Or, a story in itself of extinct powders?

Man, this Enduron situation is worse than the RS Big Game shortage awhile back. And that sucked bad for some.

Enduron seemed like the stop gap for some of the Hodgdon Extreme powders, but now they are gone all together. Can't get too dependent on any one component?

Gonna look at that today, since we're giving one last proof-check before zapping it to the printer. I know there are some Enduron loads, but not many compared to Hodgdon, Ramshot and Alliant, or even Norma or Vihtavuori.

Plus there will be some Endurons in various loading rooms for a while. Checked my supply, and have almost-full jugs of 4166 and 4451, plus 2-3 pounds each of 7977 and 8133, which I don't use as much.

But am sure as hell NOT going to include them in any upcoming handloading articles!

I have enough 4451 to assemble a bit over 400 rounds of a couple of particular hunting loads for my 243 and 6.5 CM. I'll be fine for a long time.
I'm late to the game, but please add me to the list. Thanks!
You're added!

Thanks,
John
John

Based on the response here you might have to order a second printing. I think you have hit the target audience perfectly.

I own more books written by John than any other author!

One rifle
onerifle,

Glad you like my books!

As I mentioned in a much earlier post, one reason we do this is to get a handle on before-publication demand. Between this list, and the one Eileen's been compiling, we already have close to 300 requests, so will probably order at least 1000 for the first printing--and maybe more.
John, Please add me to your list. Thank you

I can think of only one author with more books on my shelf than John. He is Konrad Knopp, and if you consider my screen name you may know why. John's books get opened a lot more than Konrad's these days.
Looks like I've been away too long from this site. I'm in for a copy plz

Thanks very much!
Have added those who requested to be, both here and in PMs.
Are they ready for sale now J.B?
It still looks like mid-October....

Just making sure I'm on your list. Don't recall getting a PM. Thanks
Just checked, and no you weren't on my list--though you may be on Eileen's, who's also keeping one. So I added you!

The PMs I mentioned referenced a couple dozen guys who PM'd me to be added, rather than posting publicly on this thread.

Thanks,
John

It bothers -saddens - me to read of a first print order of only 1K given a population over 332,403,650 people in the U.S. of A. and many more literate in English around the world. Not a personal criticism I hasten to add; rather more power to you and wishing your sales numbers matched even one percent of some folk's YouTube subscriber count.

I'd have hoped to see far more copies of your books in print. Maybe we will eventually. The Thor Power Tool decision and a myriad of other influences have been hard on book publishing small and large. Bob Hagel's book was the last that comes to mind by a major publishing house - Knopf - and reprinted by Wolfe with other books by specialty publishers.
Put me down too please.
I'm in for one as well.
Clark,

I can assure you that our little publishing company is doing fine. In fact it has funded at least half of our retirement investments, one reason we started the company a dozen years ago.

We rarely order more than 1000 books at a time, and sometimes as few as 250. There isn't much of a price break when ordering more than 1000, and often none at all, so ordering more at a time only results in complications--and even more expenses, such as storage.

Right now we have almost 20 different books in stock, between Eileen's game cookbooks, my gun and hunting books, and the paper copies of RIFLE LOONY NEWS. About half are stored in our garage, and the other half in what I facetiously call the "warehouse," a 5x10 foot storage unit a few blocks from our house.

That's the big advantage of so-called "on demand" printing: Any time our supply of a certain book gets low, we can e-mail our printer and have another batch delivered within a month. Some of books have been reprinted several times, especially the first one we self-published, Eileen's SLICE OF THE WILD, a "cookbook" that covers big game from field to table, including the science of meat care, how to butcher, what's different about the meat from various animals, and 100 recipes. It just keeps selling--but there was no economic advantage in immediately printing as many as we've sold since it appeared in 2009.

The real puzzlers in our stock of books are the paper copies of RIFLE LOONY NEWS, the quarterly on-line magazine we both write. We started publishing it on riflesandrecipes.com, at the same time we published SLICE OF THE WILD, and when anybody subscribes, they get free access to all the previous issues on the website.

But after about three years, a few subscribers suggested we publish a printed book of all the issues of RLN. There were several reasons, such as wanting a copy for deer camp, where there was no Internet access, or to put in the bathroom instead of a pile of print-outs. (One guy even sent us a photo of his stack, next to the toilet....)

So we asked other subscribers if they'd be interested, and many said yes. So we put published a collection of the first five years, which filled an 8-1/2x11 inch, 269-page book. This was easy to do, since all the issues were already on Eileen's publishing program--but we still had doubts about how well they'd sell, so only printed 250--and had to order another printing within a month! The second volume, containing the next five years, has also sold well.
Oh, and I added Elvis and 308ld to the list.

Thanks, guys....
John, please add me to the list. Thanks
John, please make sure you print a third volume of RLN. I prefer the paper version, too.

Greg Perry
Please add me. Thanks!
jmh3,

Have you on the list!

The book is now in the hands of the printer, so we'll have a better idea of a delivery date fairly soon....

Me too. I don't subscribe but buy the book version every five years.

Dang it. No 338 Fed. Oh well, it is the only one in my gun safe that is not covered. I am still buying the book though.
Also no .405 WCF or 45-90 - oh well I am pretty far along with those calibers and need no more help with them.
Both have been proven on PG and DG in Africa, so maybe I could trade that load data for a book?
I also shoot 45-70 in both my 45-90 rifles , so they keep me pretty busy.

Can provide you some .338 Federal loads--and in fact published seven in the first BIG BOOK OF GUN GACK, in the chapter titled "Kinder, Gentler .338s."

But didn't include the cartridge in this book for two reasons. First, I've only handloaded for one .338 Federal rifle--and didn't get much feedback from other hunter/handloaders on the results. This book is based on loads that work in more than one rifle.

This lack of feedback also suggests that the .338 Federal isn't very popular, and may even be dying--or dead. My take on the round was that it duplicated the muzzle velocities of the .30-06 with similar-weight bullets--but didn't shoot as flat at longer ranges.

I also never could see any difference in "killing power" between it and the .30-06, despite the slightly larger diameter of .33-caliber bullets (which is basically equal to wrapping a .30 caliber bullet in a typical business card). But that's also because the longer I hunt big game, the less difference in "killing power" I see in most cartridges, unless the bullets are a LOT different in both diameter and weight.

No doubt this will result in some disagreement....
DANG! No .35 SLR??????
laugh laugh laugh
maybe the next book can be : THE UNPOPULAR CARTRIDGES OF THE WORLD ? > i have a few too but i think J.B. did a excellent job with his selection of cartridges

No disagreement here. Thanks for the explanation. You did not have to take the time to do it but it is appreciated!
You're welcome!
Things are progressing with the printer--they'll be e-mailing back their layout any day now, so we can check it over and give the go-ahead.
So we're still looking at mid-October for the copies to arrive here.
John, is it too late to be added to the list?
I think I am on the list, but if not, add me please
You're both on the list. Thanks!
Please add me to the list as well. I’ve been keen for this ever since you wrote the first Handloads That Work article years ago. I’m still impressed. Especially that .300 Savage load with 165gr and 42gr RL15. I’m pretty sure that’s where I first came across it. That’s a stunning shooter in the 3 rifles I’ve tried it in and in the rifles of a couple buddies I’ve passed the recipe on to.
Add my name please.
Please add me to the list as well

Thanks
Please add my name, I'll take one.

Thank you
Have all you guys down. Thanks!
Add me to the list as well.....
Mike,

You were the first person to ask to be put on the list!
Hmmm. I thought I was the first to pipe up on page 1 of this thread. I did so even though I suspect .43 Reformado, .30-30 Wesson, and the Marciante Blue Streak won't be covered. grin

Yep, you were the first to respond on this thread!

But had already started a list, due to quite a few people asking to be notified ASAP in PMs. But you're still #44 on this "big" list....

Also won't be covering the 9x72R, even though I have considerable experience with it--but only in Eileen's O/U combo gun. However, Capital Sports recently got in a hammer drilling in 16x16/9x72R, and nobody has purchased it YET.... We shall see what transpires.
Please add me to the list. Thankyou.
Sent request to be added via PM.

Thanx
I’d like to purchase a copy.

Frank Shaw
Thanks!

Put your name on the list, and will notify you when we're ready to take orders.
Have added all the recent names, whether posted here or sent in PMs.

Thanks!
List has been updated once again. Right now we're still waiting to see the printed proof-copy, which should show up very soon. After giving it the OK, the books will be printed and delivered to us ASAP.
Just saw this............I'd love to purchase a copy. Please put me on the list, also.
Please put me down for a copy John.

Thanks
