Today I acquired a Ruger #1 280 AI and am wondering what dies to buy. Is the SAAMI spec'd chamber the same as that of the various die makers 280 AI 40 degree dies?
You'll get different answers on that one.
Here's Redding's take on it...
https://www.redding-reloading.com/tech-line-a-tips-faqs/133-280-changesIf I had a late model 280AI I'd stick with SAAMI
I use Redding dies and they have been fine. Should be a lovely rifle in a fine cartridge.
Is the gun a factory 280 AI? 2019 limited edition serial numer starts with JDC? If so new Saami spec dies. According to what ive read.
Redding Master Hunter set is hard to beat
Pic’s man pic’s
Lol that would be neat one knowing the story about those
I've got two different .280 Improveds. One traditional Ackley and one SAAMI. I use an older die set with a modified shell holder when loading SAAMI. Standard thickness shell holder when loading Ackley.
The reports of its death are greatly exaggerated.
I also have two 280AI's, one is SAAMI and the other isn't. By necessity, I have two sets of dies. I also use a Lee collet die with both. The non-SAMMI rifle will not chamber Nosler factory .280AI stuff. That's a pain. BTW IMR7828 has been my go-to powder with heavier bullets and R19 with the 140s.
I have had no issues with the Lee 280 AI dies. My rifle was bought used already in AI, so I don't know if it is SAMMI or not
In 280ai I have Redding, Hornady, and Lee dies.
It does not matter much, as I just use Nosler 280ai brass one time. So the dies just seat a bullet.
I have built 280ai rifles on actions:
a) 1924 VZ24 Mauser
b) 1980 Savage 110
c) 1949 Win M70 [killed a number of animals with this]
I have a 2018 factory Kimber 84L 280ai [killed a number of animals with this]
I found Redding dies and just sent them an email inquiring.
I just use Nosler 280ai brass one time
Got any of that once fired you want to get rid of?
Whew! Saw the thread title and was gonna ask when the services were scheduled.
