...from a hunting magazine, probably from the late 80's/early 90's where the topic centered around a man and his bird dog who stumbled upon an old cabin? The owner of the cabin and his own old dog were home and convinced the hunter the take his very old dog out for a short hunt, and also to borrow his Parker shotgun.

It was fictional, but I remember it being a well written story, and one that I'd like to read again.

Edit to add - The name of the short story might possibly have been something like "The Parker Invincible".
Sounds like a story by John Hewitt. Maybe from "The Model 12 as a way of Life".
Even if not it is a great read.
