What are you using / recommend?

For use with rifles with muzzle break.

My favourite is Hacksaw.
I use the ESP digital plugs. They are custom fit and very comfortable. No problem for a full day in a duck boat. Now the rest of the story.

For me, they do not protect well enough for range use with rifles or handguns. They work very well with shotguns in a duck boat and I wear them big game hunting. Like many here, I ruined my hearing with gunfire as a young man and now have hearing aids. When hunting I remove my hearing aids and put in my ESP plugs and I can hear well and am protected reasonably well from the occasional rifle shot. For repetitive rifle or handgun shots they do not protect me well enough. My go to range protection is Mack's Ear Seals.

I have done a fair bit of digging on the subject of electronic ear plugs and I have yet to learn of any that really protect from handgun and rifle report. I would be a buyer of another set of electronic ear plugs if they really protect as well as the Mack's do.

Pathfinder,

Do you have a link for Hacksaw........can't find anything on them.

Wcf, agree, find one the works on the range well enough for extended shooting is THE problem.

This is the little problem nobody talks about. I suspect many of us feel a little sheepish to admit we dropped $1500-$2000 on something that does not protect us as well as a $10 set of plugs. When I have read reviews of electronic pugs I often see endorsements but rarely see descriptions about levels of protection.

I now suspect there is not an electronic plug available that protects as well as soft rubber but allows you to hear twigs snapping or conversations.

Unfortunately many of those who don’t take that seriously have had their hearing damaged permanently.
When I was growing up we didn't use much of a hearing protection when shooting, I only used it at the range due to others shooting but not when I was plinking out by myself even shooting 44 mag, as I got older I noticed slight hearing loss in one ear, so for the last 20 years I have been using double protection at all times, one in the ear plug and the other regular over the ear head set. Old timers like Elmer Keith or even my dad had a permanent hearing loss due to years of shooting w/out any protection.

You are right about that.
