A friend is looking for a used Rem. BDL to rebarrel. We can't find one anywhere. What's going on? We've called everywhere. No one has one. Are the being hoarded like primers and powder?

I can tell you this much..........there is a ready market for wood stocked BDL's. In certain circles, they sell like hotcakes.

Hoarded?? Really? No. People who have older BDL's love them. They are not interested in selling them. My wife's Uncle just sold his LH 30-06 for $800 since he can no longer walk the woods. I scolded him for letting it go so cheap but he was ok with his 400% profit over buying it for $200 in 1980. They will only become harder to find just like the pre 64 Model 70's especially the original wooden stocked ones.

They have run up in price in Canada and nice ones don’t last long. Fortunately there are a ton of them around and chances are you’ll find one soon.

Saw a nice older BDL in 30-06 with sights and a period correct scope in the local Cabelas but they wanted $999 for it. Seems they have gone up in price. They also had an ADL in 243 for half that

Best checker pattern ever used on the BDL.

There’s been a bunch on GB every time I’ve looked. 30-06 seemed the most common. Prices appear down a bit from their peak, but still are not cheap. Add tax and shipping and you’re right up there. Nice rifles, though. I bought my first one in 1977. $200 was a chunk of change back then.

The BDL you are searching for is the 8Rem Mag.

They are rare in these parts. I’ve seen a few at shows at ridiculous prices.

I still have my early 70s BDL in .300 win mag. It's one of my out of the box most accurate rifle. Not for sale.

The BDL I want is the BDL VS in 6mm Remington.

Had a chance at one in 7-08 once and didn't think the cartridge was what I wanted in a heavy barrel. Dumb move to pass that one up.

There out there in the wild, last one I picked up was a really clean like new 700 BDL in 7mm Mag from the mid 1980's came with a period correct Leupold 2-7×.

I won't say how much I got it for, but it was a really good deal. Thing had been sighted in with factory ammo, cased & stuck under a bed for years. Gave it a good cleaning, checked all the screws, remounted the scope with better rings and took it shooting.

Pulled a starting load for Ramshot Magnum & a Hornady 139 grain Interlock and the dang thing shot sub MOA

How do the BDLs do with their open sight in regards to stock design and cheek weld?

My 270 Win worked well with the iron sights.

But out here the scope was put on.

It was bought at J.C.Penny's back in the day.

Who really would use open sights on a high powered rifle nowadays?

I've got one rebarreled in 6.5x284 Norma 1x8" twist with modern composite stock.

I bought a 700, 7RM, that had been in a safe during a fire. Had water damage, but didn’t get hot enough to char the wood. I was told if wood not charred, not hot enough to affect steel temper. Barrel and trigger were rusted/ruined.

I bought it cheap, had a Shilen 26 Nosler barrel fitted, glassed it, installed a Timney. Worked out pretty well. Stock looks good, no damage to the factory finish.

I had to replace the recoil pad, except Remington replaced it free. It was one of those Simms type pads that over time gets sticky and mushy. I contacted them, they sent a replacement.

So, deals are out there, just gotta find them.

The M700’s are collector guns now, for that matter so are most Remington guns. The prices that unaltered M700’s and M788’s with condition are commanding at auction are eye opening. The days of cheap Remington’s especially in the less common chamberings are over.

Then why put them on the BDL? The BDL is a good looking rifle, but kind of an oddball today. I agree, 6.5 Creedmore in a BDL seems strange to use the irons.

I shoot several surplus rifles with open sights, including a Spanish k98 that I had restocked and rebarreled to 30/06. I’ve killed a handful of pigs with it.
I even went through the trouble of restocking my 7600 308 so that I wouldn’t get slapped in the face by the high comb when using my peep sight. It’s much better now with the straight, low comb stock.
It’s probably hard to find a stock that works well with a scope and iron sights on the same rifle. That’s why I asked about the stock/sights/cheek weld on the BDL. I’d like to have one and was curious about it.

A BDL had always had sights. Wouldn't be a BDL without sights. Would need a different nomenclature to differentiate.

Or just leave it alone and if you don't use irons then scope it and move along. Not like they're adding real weight or are a hassle to have on there.

Back in the 87/88 range of time 700 adl's could be bought with irons or without them. Mb

Right. The question was, who uses high powered rifles with open sights nowadays? Which would beg the question, why buy a rifle with open sights that have no purpose?
I’m not saying that reflects my opinion. I don’t have any qualms about using open sights. Always liked the BDLs even though I’ve never fired one. Just cool, classic looks. I might spring for a 270 eventually.

Darn gun collectors are ruining things for everyone. Good 700's that are begging to be shot and tinkered with are gathering dust in the back of some collector's safe. I wish these guys would stick to stamps or stocks and bonds.

Recently I was in BPS near DFW airport and saw a BDL with the above stock pattern in 6mm Rem. It was in good shape but I do not need another. I also have a 30-06 in that pattern. I think I paid $650 for it and it is just lightly used. They are my favorite version of the BDLs.
