What solvents are ok with nickel revolvers? What solvents are not ok with nickel?
Thanks
I've always used plain ol' Hoppes #9.
I read somewhere to NOT use WD40. Anyone have any experience with?
I’ve read not to use Hoppes #9.
I’d never ever use WD40 on any firearm!

!
No ill effects that i can see.
Stay away with ammonia solvents.
Prolonged exposure to #9 stained our nickeled 1911. Needless to say, more concentrated NH3+ is a bad idea. Doesn't affect the nickel plate directly, but by way of the base layer of copper plate. So I've read.
Perhaps the issues are:
What to use that won’t affect the copper base.
Abrasives will erode the nickel - so no abrasives.
It seems to me that most cleaners fall into these categories. I’m getting a nickel plated S&W 57 and I don’t want to harm the finish but I’d like to clean it now and then. I have no experience and as Sargent Schultz would say “I know nothing!” (Regarding nickel)
I've used Hoppe's #9 on many nickel S&W revolvers since the '70s. It has done no harm whatsoever. I don't soak guns in Hoppe's #9 or anything else, but I'm not sure doing so would be detrimental.
Soap/water, dry it off, finish with a oiled rag.
I know it says "don't soak" but I don't use #9 on nickel after seeing this awhile back.
Yeh, I read that before I posted. I want a 57 pretty bad and it’s at the right price. Can’t understand the allure of the nickel plating.

On a working gun not so much but for looks I love em!
