As I now have decent shooting Savage 99 in 308, I am thinking about my Rem 700 in 25-08. Something about eventually a 25-08, 30-08 and then a 35-08 just seems right.
Seems necking up or down to this should be no problem.
It's currently a 308, (30-08), fully custom tricked, L.H.

Why not?

But .257 Bob would work too, and there were be even less problem necking brass.

Recoil wise, where's the Bob'er to the '08? Also, will it work in my H.S. Mag box?

I really like the Bob, but I'd check on the mag box thing for sure. I had a 6mm Remington in 700 ADL and did not like the fact that it wouldn't even load to the max COL (2.825"). Anything over about 2.815" and the bullets would get kinked and stuck in the magazine. Seems like if Remington introduced the cartridge and Remington made the gun it is chambered in, that Remington would make sure it would work to their specs. Don't know about your HS box length, but it'd be worth checking. A Bob in a Winnie SA should be a hard to beat deer killer.

My kids are shooting three "bobs" now and it sure makes it easier to manage ammo in the prehunt darkness. that said, I have been waiting on a 257-308 for years. my youngest still uses the 250 but that will change in a year or two. this past weekend, we had a 250, two 257s and a 257 wby in the rack

if the 243, 260, 7mm08, 308 and 358 all work on the 308 case, why not a 257? I know the guy buying world is not looking for a short, moderate speed 25 cal but I would like to have one (no more wildcats for me).

all of my bobs are on short action win 70s

It would fill the enormous gap between the 243 and the 260.

The 257 Roberts is the functional equivlaent of the 25-08 (25 Souper) and will work just fine in the Savage action (IIRC).

A 35-08 is exactly what a 358 Winchester is. Same-o-same-o.

I love my .25-308, but in reality, there's no perceptible difference between it and a .243 Win or .250 Savage. It's just the teeniest shade behind the Bob (at least in my rifle) but even that velocity gap is meaningless. I know that martinbns's comment was tongue in cheek, but he's right - the .25-308 fills a gap so narrow it hardly lets light through.

I do think it's one of the world's easiest wildcats to create and/or load for. I prefer to neck down 7-08 brass because I had my rifle made years before there was a .260.

Still, if your heart yearns for a quarter bore, there's no cure but to have one, and the .25-308 is a sweet one to choose.

Got two of them, course it reads 250AI on the barrel....
Posted By: RockyRaab Re: what think you 25-08 - 10/29/07
Yup, I shoulda mentioned that. The .25-308 is EXACTLY the same as a .250AI in every respect (except for minor dimensional aspects, and loading dies, of course) - and the AI is a well-regarded little shooter.

I was considering a 250 improved, and yes, I know a 35-08 is a 358 and so on. I've never cared for the whole name everything like it's a whole new design on a new case thing that they do with the 308, when the ought-six generally gets it's due.

Well, not always....27-06?, 35-06?, 28-06? grin

When creating a "30-08" wildcat, do you first neck up the .308, and then neck it back down to .30 cal - or do you start with necking it down and then back up to .30 cal? wink

Neither, just fireform with 7mm-08 brass..........

Mine does too...

South Texas you beat me too it.

I am with Deadkenny: I guess I'll just have to ponder another great cartridge the 270 win necked up to 30.

I'm veddy sweet on that chambering, will never be without one...
Posted By: Nessmuk Re: what think you 25-08 - 10/30/07
Maybe I'll go with a 25-250 non-Ackly improved?

To make 30-08 brass you cut a little out of an ought-6 case and braze it back together.

Ahhh, OK, thx for the clarification. So where is the best place for the 'cut'? Should it be in the middle? Closer to the neck? or to the base? I'm thinking that if you cut it at the base, you could make a little belt. So you'd have a sort of 30-08 belted non-magnum. wink

Dosn't really matter. You only get one bang for your buck. I find poly-carbonate lenses are better than glass at reflecting bits and pieces, BTW.
