I am considering buying the new Savage model 12 F Class Precision Target Rifle which is chambered in 6.5-284 Norma. I have a bunch of the excellent Lapua 6.5-284 cases on hand as I was using them in a 6-284. Can someone tell me whether or not I can use my Lapua cases in the Savage chamber? I am wondering if the case dimensions are close enough that they would be interchangeable in the factory chamber as it comes from Savage. Also does anyone know how Savage is throating these chambers? Are they a tapered or parallel throat and are they of a length to enable the various VLD and SMK bullets to touch the lands with not too much of the bullet down into the powder space but still getting full contact with the case neck? You need to check out the savage shooters board they can tell you the answer you want . I think they are the same thing but I have been wrong before.Lots of the guys over there are shooting the 6.5-284s.

I shoot quite a bit of 6.5x284 in my 700 and yes I've shot both Norma and Lapua in it no problem!
The 6.5x284 Norma just seats the bullet out further in a longer magazine than the 6.5x284 Win which suitable to a short magazine.
The 6.5x284 is my fav cartridge.
Did you draw a spring bear for the Blues? I drew a Grande Ronde tag.
SU35, thanks for the info on the cases. It looks to be quite a cartridge. My intended use would be just for shooting rockchucks at 500 or more yards from the bench. I did draw a spring bear tag for the Blues but in Oregon. I am stoked though as I was able to get permission to hunt some prime private property pretty close to town. Hoping for some warmer weather to melt some more of the snow. Good luck on your bear hunt. Rufous.

SU35 Is slowly turning me into a 6.5 wantabee slut. Hope a 260 in a Kimber comes my way next year. 125 and 140 Partitions for me. I am becoming a believer!

Shag, yes I drew the West Blue Mtn tag. I was up this evening and saw my first bear of the year. It was about 1100 yards away across a couple canyons. I probably could have gotten within range to make the shot but I was by myself and after analyzing the treacherous extraction job I elected to pass. Perhaps I will try for him another day when my buddy is along. Doing steep terrain with cliffs in the dark and through snow drifts by myself just did not seem wise. Rufous.
Hi rufous, I have that rifle and working up some loads with it. Use the Lapua brass, it seems to be more consistent weight and neck thickness wise. Depending what your going to do shoot paper or critters? Anyway I've been to the range and shot some 142SMK claimed BC of .599 at 3000 f/s. 49 grains of 4350 and 210 fed primers. I'm still trying to find the seating distance. shot some at .020 from lands. Seemed pretty good but will try some closer and back some up to see the difference. The local range goes only to 300m here. Got most inside a 3 inch circle. Barrel is new and just breaking in. First time fired brass. So next time only neck resize should tighten up. I also got a box of 139 scenars that I'd like to try as soon as I get the 142's sorted out. Great rifle- little long and off balance(barrel heavy) I know that's not so impressive but that's better than anything else I've got on the rack already. Accutrigger takes a little getting use to.
