Great article and pretty well cloned my walk in the world of hunting..I began my big game hunting with the 25-35 and 30-30 and it included deer, pronghorn and elk, and neither of them ever failed me..I have a world of respect for the 30-30 as a killer, the 25-35 is a great killer to but you need to keep ranges within 150 to 200 yards and definately can't be off at all, used properly its a decent deer rifle and even for elk within about 100 yards broadside..

John went on to praise the 250-3000 Savage another ranch gun in our family that killed about 30 elk for my dad and maybe 6 or 7 for me and never failed..I have no idea how many deer we killed with it and all with 100 gr. silvertips and Rem Corelokts.

Notice they are all saddle guns so far.

Of course any hunter withs Johns experience wouldn't omit the great 30-06, a caliber that I would hunt any animal in the world with along with the 7x57 which he left out of his synopsis, but hey you can't count them all!

He added the 270 Wby, a caliber I have shot but never used on game, but I know for sure its about as flat shooting as a caliber can get with kicking the wadden out of you..

His last choice was the .284 Win..I have shot a lot of game with the .284 in a Savage 99F. I have owned a few of those and they are great all around saddle guns for deer and elk..

I later graduated to bolt rifles but I still have the 25-35, 30-30, and 250 Savage that were our family rifles and I still hunt deer with them and ocassionally bear and elk with them, just out of nostalgia..

I have two 06's, a Win. 95 SRC that dotes on 200 and 220 gr. Noslers and Woodleighs, and a custom Ruger 77 that my son gave me for my 50th birthday. I have custom stocked it, added a a control feed and M-70 safety..

I loved Johns article and actually don't read many gun rags anymore, but it caught my eye..It brought back a lot of memories and reminded me its where you stick the bullet that counts the most..

An yes I have a gun cabnet full of big bores!

I would post my rifles on here if I could, I gave up on that some time back, too complicated for this old curmudgeon cowboy who frankly is tired of learning new technology..but I would be glad to send pictures of them to your emails..just tell me how many you want to see? but hurry before I sell most of them except the family guns a few I made and some favorites..I am cutting back as I am not hunting like I used to and my kids have all the guns they need..I need the money to support my team roping habit! :):)
