When and how did this come about? For years I've been thinking that Winchester was keeping a strangle hold on their .358 cartridge, and now thinkfully I see that Hornady is now producing it!

Will Federal and the others now follow? Hope so! grin

I prefer the Hornady brass over the winchester also, so this will work out great, at a better price will be able to get the .358's out of the safe now.

maybe its just my experience hunting ELK and deer with a 358 win, but the 250grain .358 diam. speer over 44 grains of imr4064 has been an exceptionally effective hunting load with really consistent accuracy , I don,t see the 200 grain being the best choice.
I don,t think anyone I reload for has used, or supplied anything but 308 win cases necked up, and while on paper the flatter trajectory of the 200 grain looks good, the 250 grain speer has proven itself to be excellent in the field
Maybe not, but you can now go down and buy Hornady Custom Ammuniton for about $28 to $30 a box and go to the range for a little practice, and then have good brass fitted to your chamber for reloads, and have a better brass to boot...

And I'm sure that in the long run Hornady will offer it in other offerings too.

I agree the 200 Hornady is a deer bullet (darn fine deer bullet tho). My experience with Winchester brass is that some is good and some less so dependingon caliber. My experience with the Win 358 brass is that at least by the standards of neck thickness its very good brass. I just got the Sinclair concentricity guage and have been measuring everything I can. Both my 200g HSP and 225NP loads are in the .002" runout range when sized with a redding neck die and seated with the Hornady 358 seater. I doubt that Hornday brass will be much more concentric than that.

Its nice to see more folks loading the 358, its a fine caliber but I am not sure the hornady 200sp load will do much that a 200 win silver tip wouldn't.. It would be nice if someone would make a comercial 225NP load at 2550 (20" barrel) or a 200g TTSX load at 2700. Elk killers they would be.
We will be giving the 200 gr bullet, the Barnes TTSX, a run in June in Africa on kudu, wildebeest, gemsbuck and such. Sure hope it works. laugh I do now that it shoots well inside 3/4" from my M70 driven by 51 grs of TAC in Win 358 cases.
I'll be watching for that report Tony....and good luck on a bullet recovery wink

Now that's some pricy stuff , I'll stick to home brewed !
What barrel twist do you need to get the optimum lonfger range performance from the SPs? I am considering a project...

I always thought the factory 250 grain silvertips shot exceptionally well out of my savage 99. Personally don't see a reason for the 200's, although one of them DRTed a whitetail last November since it was all I had.
The 225 Ballistic Tip was a nice bullet in my Whelen and would stretch the 358's potential. I don't think they make it any more though. It's not shown on their website.
I've been necking up military 7.62X51mm brass for 358 loads. Nice to know Hornady is making it now.
I get that velocity with a 225NP, to bad they didn't load a heavier bullet at that velocity. No one ever chambered the 358 in a weak action.

It isn't like this stuff will be on dealers shelves either, so if I have to go to the trouble of ordering ammo, I might as well just by primer, powder and bullets instead.

After all my 358 is already sighted in for the load I like and it has been proven by both me and my children to be effective.

Sounds like the 225 gr Accubond is your answer.
They stopped the Whelen bullet (called protected point or partition). They do make a 225 grain Accubond. haven't been able to locate them to try in my rifle.
LOL - I think I bought a couple boxes of those. I really have to get my reloding stuff set up again. I have a mound of gear in milk crates. Good think I put together a good amount of ammo before moving.
Never had a .35 anything, but 200-210 is enough for anything this side of the great bears out of a .338-06. I suspect the same holds true with 200-225s out of the .35. jack

I've used 358s on and off for years, but never did consider it to be a LR chambering.

Hornady and Remington 200s always worked fine in any twist up to 16" but you need to pay att'n to your throat for the shorter bullet. I pretty much switched to 250gr Speers and have forsaken the lighter bullets.

.
The 200 gr TTSX is just a hair shorter than the 225 gr AB. Originally I was going to use the AB as they shot very well too. Decided on the Barnes for S&G's more than anything else.
Whilst welcome, I would really like to see a factory load that rivals the 338Federals 185gr TSX. A 180gr Barnes in 35cal would give punters the velocity they seem to crave from every factory cartridge, plus a hang together projectile for larger game. But placed well, I bet this 200gr will do the job. Up close and from the 358s modest velocity, the 200gr spirepoint is tough enough for game larger than just 'deer'.
Cheers...
