There is a great article about Wally Johnson's .375 H&H M70 in the current issue of Sports Afield, complete with pictures. That thing has been well-used. No safe queen there! Anyone want to post a pic of your own favorite well-used rifle?
Win M70 "Ingwe Special" 7x57....duh...

You know, I want that when you're dead.
Good to know...thanks for thinking of me.
Aw, now, don't get all emotional on me.
You two get a room.
Uh...no.
You're just jealous cause he got dibs on a proper rifle....
IIRC,I called dibs on it, but NOOOOOO,I own several .270's. wink laugh
Ingwewifes '06 that I cobbled together for her has a good patina of use on it...

Nice! Details? Looks like a Zastava M98 action.
Its a cobbled Interarms Mark X....

Shortened the for end and gave it an ebony tip, recheckered to match factory pattern, rasped down the buttstock and cheekpiece, and gave it a shadow line, installed english red pad.
Leupold 1x4 scope.

I set the scope on 2.5, didn't tell her you could do anything else with it, and lo, she managed to kill more game than rinderpest with it, while big burley men need magnum whiz bangs with 4.5x14 scopes....
Blasphemy of course, but my 300 Weatherby is my "gotoer" rifle. Over a dozen African species, black bear, countless hogs & whitetail:

You did a good job.

And no smart comments from you, Elk!!

The Swaro glass and Randall knife go a long way towards off-setting the negativity of the Weatherby....

grin
70s era?
Zeiss glass too, Chui! smile
Mike: Purchased in 1998, one of the first US made after they left Japan. Very accurate.
I guess a guy could sleaze by with Zeiss...... wink
Cool. The stock design and vent recoil pad fooled me.
Jorge, all kidding aside, if thats one of the first US made guns after Japan, and it works well...you won the lottery. Our luck in the gun biz was always with the Japanese guns.
I like the lack of lustre on your stock,or is it just the camera angle?

Just a piddley 358 Win.

Beautiful warthog and Nyala Ed!

You probably shouldn't have shot the dog though.....

I was afraid the dog might touch someone's nerve. grin

Completely agree with the jap guns. Even over the Germans. Yep, one of the very first ones by SACO (?). Camera angle, it's a typical whorehouse glossy Weatherby finish smile
I wasn't gong to say anything. Bet it made a mighty small rug.

Pretty nice rifle, by the way.

I'll go with "Chester the Molester". It's a 1970's PF M70 - XTR, I believe. Started life as a 300 Winny, but rebarreled to .375-338 as shown here:

No, I didn't shoot the fish with it. We were crusing the beaches in May looking for bears and found this fish flopping around on a tide flat and went to check it out.

Strange way to fish you have up there. wink

And it's for sale, right, Bruce?
Here's a couple of mine, pre 64 model 70's of course!
First a recent addition, a 300 H&H from the the original owner's son, bought new in 1952 and had used all over N.A. and Africa. Now I'll continue on it's hunting tradition.
[Linked Image]

then a mid 50's .270 featherweight, my faithful companion of many years and still going strong.
[Linked Image]

I have a well-used .280 Ackley that has killed more than a few critters. Prairie goats, mulies, whitetails, bears and mooses ... we do not discriminate. grin

When Karen is better, perhaps I'll post a photo of that wonderfully reliable rifle.

Blessings,

Steve

Love 'em, nicks, bruises, and all.

Tom
150 NBT or 160 TSX?
John
If he admits to anything other than 175s he has to turn in his "cool" card!!
Ain't mine, but is the best example of well-used that I have seen.

John that was a 150 NBT...

Don't think I need the Barnes on deer sized critters...in Africa where you don't know what size your target is, Barnes rules.
Sounds like a good combo.
What load and velocity are you getting?
John I loaded them specifically for deer, and didn't redline them. That load is smoking along at about 2650fps....
Tom
The 7x57 doesn't have to prove a thing. It epitomises adequacy and performance for most of what we all do. Only the .30/06 comes close.
John
Ingwe, I thought you said you'd never polluted your barrel with anything lighter than 175s. Or was that Bell... confused

I didn't 'pollute' it until that damn Mule Deer made me try 160 Barnes TSX......

John: spot on about the 7x57/.30-06...

Folks have asked me why I slowed yup the deer load( speed is bigger and better you know...) well, the rifle shoots great at that speed, and the terminal performance is about 50% less bloodshot meat than I'd get at 3000 fps.
He's not trustworthy. laugh

A few stories in that rifle!
Why did you shoot the little dog?
[Linked Image]
Just got around to picking up the magazine to read the article. I've been around a couple of well used rifles before and read of some others...( Pinnell and Talifson rifles ). I have never seen a rifle as well used as Wally Johnson's. That rifle had a hard life.........:)
So what can you tell us about this well-used girl? Who does own it?

Poobah, you were in the right place at the right time where your wife is concerned. Way to purty for you. powdr
Here is the man, the myth, the legend with his rifle. Ran into him at SCI in Vegas. He seemed a little amused by his celebrity and the fact that that anyone would be interested in his rifle which was for sale for a cool $75,000. cool

Isn that his son?
ha ha. just another old geezer....me
These rifles definitely have some history. Always interesting to hear about rifles that have been used for decades and to enjoy the pics of hunts from the past.
Sorry double post
Sorry triple post
I think what pathfinder is saying is that the fellow holding the rifle is Walt Johnson, Wally Johnson's son. Wally was born in 1912. I'm not sure of his date of death. Maybe Dan Peterson knows.
Yes, RevMike is correct. That is Wally's son Walt holding Wally's rifle.

Dan
Johnny D he jumped some kind of fence or broke into her Dad's house for sure. Can't see why the old man didn't shoot him and be done with it. powdr
