Shortened the for end and gave it an ebony tip, recheckered to match factory pattern, rasped down the buttstock and cheekpiece, and gave it a shadow line,installed english red pad.
Leupold 1x4 scope.

I set the scope on 2.5, didn't tell her you could do anything else with it, and lo, she managed to kill more game than rinderpest with it, while big burley men need magnum whiz bangs with 4.5x14 scopes....

The Swaro glass and Randall knife go a long way towards off-setting the negativity of the Weatherby....

Winchester m 70 Sporter .30-06.

I'll go with "Chester the Molester". It's a 1970's PF M70 - XTR, I believe. Started life as a 300 Winny, but rebarreled to .375-338 as shown here:



No, I didn't shoot the fish with it. We were crusing the beaches in May looking for bears and found this fish flopping around on a tide flat and went to check it out.

Here's a couple of mine, pre 64 model 70's of course!
First a recent addition, a 300 H&H from the the original owner's son, bought new in 1952 and had used all over N.A. and Africa. Now I'll continue on it's hunting tradition.


then a mid 50's .270 featherweight, my faithful companion of many years and still going strong.

I have a well-used .280 Ackley that has killed more than a few critters. Prairie goats, mulies, whitetails, bears and mooses ... we do not discriminate.

When Karen is better, perhaps I'll post a photo of that wonderfully reliable rifle.

Don't think I need the Barnes on deer sized critters...in Africa where you don't know what size your target is, Barnes rules.

What load and velocity are you getting?

John I loaded them specifically for deer, and didn't redline them. That load is smoking along at about 2650fps....

The 7x57 doesn't have to prove a thing. It epitomises adequacy and performance for most of what we all do. Only the .30/06 comes close.

I didn't 'pollute' it until that damn Mule Deer made me try 160 Barnes TSX......

Folks have asked me why I slowed yup the deer load( speed is bigger and better you know...) well, the rifle shoots great at that speed, and the terminal performance is about 50% less bloodshot meat than I'd get at 3000 fps.

He's not trustworthy.

Just got around to picking up the magazine to read the article. I've been around a couple of well used rifles before and read of some others...( Pinnell and Talifson rifles ). I have never seen a rifle as well used as Wally Johnson's. That rifle had a hard life.........:)

So what can you tell us about this well-used girl? Who does own it?

Here is the man, the myth, the legend with his rifle. Ran into him at SCI in Vegas. He seemed a little amused by his celebrity and the fact that that anyone would be interested in his rifle which was for sale for a cool $75,000.

These rifles definitely have some history. Always interesting to hear about rifles that have been used for decades and to enjoy the pics of hunts from the past.

I think what pathfinder is saying is that the fellow holding the rifle is Walt Johnson, Wally Johnson's son. Wally was born in 1912. I'm not sure of his date of death. Maybe Dan Peterson knows.
