I I have a Savage Stevens 322A 22 Hornet circa 1950. It had a weaver N3 side mount scope base on it with a half-inch weaver scope I want to change it to take a 1 inch Simmons 22 mag scope that I bought I bought a sun optics side mount with the Pickatinny rail that was supposed to fit but it didn't the rail was canted to the side and the mounting holes didn't match. the mounting holes on the rifle were three eights inch front two hole to hole and 3 1/8 inch fronthole to rear hole. I've scoured the Internet trying to find a matching side mount 1 inch scope that will match the N3 holes on the rifle now. any help it would certainly be appreciated

A quick look at the Internets tells me that there are a couple of possible sources. B Square mounts and Brownells. I am not sure which particular mount you were using, but you might try contacting these two places.

As well, your gunsmith might be able to help. Many can fashion or adapt generic mounts from aluminum. Have you chatted with one yet?

Hopefully you will find the answer you seek.

The B-Square side-mount for the Savage 340 series is, IMO, the best base available, but I doubt that the screw hole spacing will be the same as the Weaver "N" mount.

I looked at the B square but the holes didn't match. I'm not sure they make an N3 that matches the original I have that you would take a 1 inch scope

I don't think that the "N" series pressed steel mounts were made for 1" diameter scopes, just 3/4" and 7/8". The only N-mount that I have in service is a 7/8", used to attach a Lyman Alaskan to a Savage 1920.

FWIW, I have some old Shooter's Bibles that have the "Type N Mounts" listed.

On page 375 of the 1963 edition, #54, the N1, N2, and N5 are listed as low and the N3, N4, and N5 are listed as high.

I'm believing that I'm going to need to have a gunsmith mount one for me.

The pressed steel bases that Savage sold for the 340 series rifles have the "standard" factory hole spacing. If the B-Square mount's hole spacing doesn't match the hole spacing on your rifle, I doubt that the Savage units will fit, but you won't know until you try.

I'm guessing it would be easy to drill new holes in the pressed steel bases to match the holes in the rifle.

I don't believe any of the Stevens 320 series will be factory drilled for scope mounts as they were only made until about '52. Regards, Woody

I'm 100% sure that your rifle wasn't factory d&t and you are right that it would be easier to drill holes in the pressed steel mount than the rifle's receiver.

FWIW, GPC has one of these mounts on an eBay auction that ends tomorrow at 5pm. It is list as this - Savage 340, 342 and Springfield 840 Rifle Scope Side Mount.

I have a $75 Springfield 840, same thing as a Sav 322.

I paid $40 at Optics Planet for a Weaver side mount and detachable double rings.

I did not have the scope mounted. That rifle has just been sitting in the safe for 10 years.
You forced me to work for an hour relieving the stock.



I think that [Weaver 48401 & Weaver 49340] system puts the scope a quarter inch to the right of center on this rifle.

I have busted my tail in the past, designing and building a part that replaces the Weaver side mount with something lower.
