I don't even know how to ask this question, but I was thinking about muzzle erosion, accuracy, all sorts of things with my Garand. I placed a M-2 ball round (LC 68 head stamp) bullet first in the end of the barrel, then I did the same with Remington 30-06 150 gr. sp (green box).

To me it looks like the ball ammo engages the rifling 'more' (that's not the correct term) then the forward surface of the factory ammo, yet they are both .30 caliber. Beside the bullets being different (fmj vs. sp) what causes this to happen?

Thanks Guys

The two bullets have a different ogive length, i.e. curve from the tip to the bore diameter part. The more gradual the curve, the farther from the case mouth the rifling will engage the ogive.
