I've been using Reminton 700's my whole life. I do like them.

One thing, I have never liked the safety on them, I don't much like one that locks in the trigger. I do like the Winchester 3 position safety that locks the bolt.

Now I see this GENTRY CUSTOM LLC - REMINGTON 700 THREE-POSITION SAFETY SHROUD.

Has anybody used one?

Yes

No but if I still had a 700, I'd consider getting one. My 700 discharged once while I was closing the bolt, unloading it. I'm certain I didn't touch the trigger.

Why would you close the bolt to unload a 700?
Posted By: Seafire Re: Remington Safety - 02/26/17
Gotta a cost on one of those? Web site didn't list the price.....

if it isn't an arm and a leg, I think you talked me into one...

I've got an ADL so I cycle the bolt to unload the magazine.

I have many ADL's and I've never closed the bolt to unload the magazine.

You only need to pop them free of the mag...
Posted By: Mule Deer Re: Remington Safety - 02/26/17
Yep, I've had a Gentry safety on a couple of 700's. They worked great.

Yup. I unload my 660 by pushing the cartridges out of the magazine with the bolt and dump them without chambering any of them.
Posted By: cdb Re: Remington Safety - 02/26/17
Well I feel like a dumbass. I never thought about doing it that way Steelhead but I will from now on.
Posted By: Steelhead Re: Remington Safety - 02/26/17
Yep, no need to shove one up the spout unless you want to get angry at something.

Safety is the mantra and you lessen the chances of bad sheit happening if you keep them out of the spout.

Im a fan of ADL mag boxes.

I have been told so many times how unsafe it is to have to cycle all the rounds thru the chamber to unload them.

I have shown several people the safe way to unload a ADL they always seem baffled.

Just push the bolt forward enough to pop the round loose and then turn the action sideways to dump it out. Repeat. I have come to like a floor plate so they can be dropped out with the push of a button.

IT AIN'T DROP IN

My gunsmith charged me $175 for the safety and installation on the last build he did for me. (An Interarms Mauser action).

Maybe not, but they are very neat.

Be a lot if you have 10 Rem 700's like I do to get those safety's installed. They sure look cool.
Posted By: Steelhead Re: Remington Safety - 02/27/17
They are an answer to a question not asked. I have a rifle with one installed. I'd not have one done again.

I agree with Steelhead. I've had one, did nothing for me, won't have another.

They're primarily made for those shooters who firmly believe the Winchester Model 70 safety is the best ever--but somehow don't believe all their rifles should be Model 70's.

So are elephants, but I don't want one of them either.

Did it not work? Malfunction? or is it superfluous waste of money because you prefer to carry cold?
Posted By: Steelhead Re: Remington Safety - 02/27/17
It works, just have never figured out what the magical 3 position safety does for you. A waste of money, period.
Posted By: longbarrel Re: Remington Safety - 02/27/17
I don't chamber a round until ready to use it. Any safety, especially one out in the open like that, can be popped off by something brushing against it. I would rather have the bolt un-cocked so it won't open and dump a round if the handle is snagged, etc.

Of course not...you just got over having a white one for eight years.

Neat!? You've obviously never had to clean up after one!
