I recently traded into a Whitworth .375 . No real hunting plans for it, occasiontional range trip and maybe try on a hog. Old eyes dampen the enjoyment of iron sights. Thinking of scoping. Is the Leupold VX2 , 1-4x20 man enough for .375 recoil?
Thanks.
I'm interested in that answer, too.
I've got one on a Guide gun, and so far, it's held up. But, it hasn't had all that many run through it, yet.
Calculations on a 10-lb .375 with a 270 grain bullet at 2700 fps is 36 ft-lbs recoil at 15.4 fps, while my GG load generates 34 ft-lbs at 16 fps, so it's relatively even.
I hunt with the .45-70, but recoil is at a level where I don't sit and fire large amounts of ammo at one time through it, maybe 20 rounds.
Not an expert, but, based on the general toughness of Leupolds and the fact that it only weighs 8oz., I believe it'll do well. Especially since the .375 offers more of a shove than a .300 or .338 magnum. I just put M8 3x on mine. Plenty of power for anything you'll shoot with a .375.

The answer is a definite "yes"!
I mounted one of these on a Ruger #1 in 45-70 for a buddy, 20+ years ago, we built, at his urging [still dont know why] a load featuring the 350 gr Hornady round nosed sp [later to a mag? flat point] bullet for a velocity of 2400 fps, not a typo, it's a hot load to say the least, last check the little friction adjust 1-4x20 is still chugging right along.
I think my bud is a sado-masakists? from some of the wounds I've seen on the deer and pigs he's shot with that load.
Damn, who'd a thought Tom Selleck shoots a 1-4x20 Leupold?
I have had a 41 year old, "G" prefix, 2-7X28 Vari-X IIc on a Winchester 70 in 375 H&H for over 30 years and it has never missed a beat, so I would expect a comparable Leupold with 30 years of improvements to be an even better sight.
I have a VX II 1-4 that has spent its whole life on several different hard-recoiling rifles, including a .375 H&H and a .404 Jeffery and it still holds zero an tracks like it should. Yours should work just fine.

That was 20 years ago...that scope is still chugging along on my wife's .30-06
Im gonna borrow her gun and go shoot a nilgai with it...

LOL, that'll work too.
She'll get dibs on the loin cuts I'm sure ;]

Wait a minute....I thought the 243 was your BIG gun now?!?
I've used a VX-II 1-4x on my CZ 550 .375 H&H and it worked fine.
Thanks for all your responses.

It is...thats why I have to BORROW her gun...
I try to make it simple for you people...
You know you want to shoot a nilgai with a 95 BTip! If you don't, who will (besides the designer Gale Root)?

Point of fact is that Im hunting a cow nilgai for the meat, and if the outfitter would let me, I'd slip it a 95gr NBT........
Hope that was a one-shot kill on that rabbit. They charge if they're wounded, and they're fast and mean.

Ah..Monty Python!
And yes,it was a one shot kill.
I see a new thread forming...Overbulleting your rabblt rifle?
Dem wabbits is a little bitty target. Dat scope gotta be good.
More magnification would be plum frightful, making wabbits look scary big...

Truth!
You must be vewy, vewy quiet.
.460's are not vewy, vewy quiet....
He is also vewwy intwepid........
I only have 3 of them.
I've had exactly zero issues with them. Great scopes.
Keep it up DF and I'll start a "call out" thread and then you will be in heap big trouble.
How's the eyebox compare to a Leupold 4x or 6x scope?
How's the eyebox compare to a Leupold 4x or 6x scope?
Good!
I've had several 1-4's over the years, but my present one's on my 16x16/6.5x57R Sauer drilling. When strictly hunting birds I take the scope off, but when hunting big game turn the scope all the way down, just in case I bump a gamebird. It's pretty easy to wingshoot a grouse with the scope on 1x--or even shoot a wunning wabbit!
Was just thinking how times have radically changed.
With todays intensely P.C. world, you'd NEVER see ole Elmer slipping up on that wascally wabbit with a WHAT!!
No, not a firearm...!
Sad state of affairs
But gang bangers, brandishing pistols gheto style, are somehow cool...
Now, back to the 1-4x20 discussion.
DF
I'm a big fan of this scope and have one drilling 16/16/6.5x58R, combo gun 12/5.6x52R, combo gun 12/5.6x50R Mag and a bolt action in 25-204 set up with the Leupold 1-4x20mm. I use the drilling and combos for coyote hunting and the bolt action for deer. I just came back from coyote hunting in NV for 10 days and had taken the 25-204 to get some trigger time as the pelts weren't good yet and never felt under scoped even out in places I could see for miles. Even when calling these open spaces I keep them on 1x my closest shot was 10 yards on a coyote that seemed to appear out of no where. On 4x 300 yard shots on coyotes are still a piece of cake.
i have a vx2 and a vx3 in this setup. they are perfect for the lever, pump and bolt carbines i typically hunt with. the only issue i have with the vx2 is that it is hard to adjust. i hear that leupold can fix that but i just never bother sending it back. it pretty much stays on 4x.
Have had a couple of them and currently have one on a 30 Remington pump. Elephant rifle, mostly. I like the low end's eye relief and the view. It might just be my imagination, but for me, a little bit of magnification is helpful for both eyes open shooting.
Yes the friction adjusts were better.
I've got three of those scopes I can think of, one of which is on a .45-70 Guide Gun that sees nothing but full-house 400 grain loads. While I don't use it for large quantity plinking, I've had it around 20 years and it's seen a lot of use in my hands and a couple friends who've borrowed it from time to time. It's never shifted zero or otherwise behaved badly.
BTW erich, nice equipment and results
Been thinking about putting one on a Marlin for timber hunting whitetails. Hate to do it, but age isn't helping my eyes any with the iron sights. I'm not one to shoot past legal time, would the small objective get the job done in the woods?
Scope the Marlin. I have nine of them, five of them wear glass. I take them out in public. 1-4 is a good choice.
Jack
1-4 is a good choice. There is no shame in putting glass on a Marlin. Several of mine wear them. No one seems to object.
Jack
Any advantages of the 1-4 over the 1.5-5? Other than for grouse shooting that is.
Yes, I know, the 1.5-5 is a VX3 so it has "better glass?"

FWIW Ive used both extensively and the only REAL advantage I ever saw was that the 1-4 VX2 would glare out looking into the rising or setting sun, the VX3 did not....good to know when hunting leopard.
Thanks, Tom, it's worth quite a lot actually (even though I don't expect to ever hunt leopard).
any thoughts on using the scope till the last few minutes of legal time in the woods?
I hunt coyotes with mine and have no restrictions on hunting hours. If it is light enough to see a coyote coming in with my eyes I can kill him with my 1-4x20. When I used to hunt deer back in MN and WI my goto scope was A 1.5-4.5x20mm Weaver V-4.5, never had an issue of not being able to kill a deer if I could see him with my bare eyes. With low power scopes objective size has little infuence.
Thanks for the clarification

Good to know about the 'light wash'

Gunner if you're doing it right, the leopard blind wont be situated looking into the setting sun, so no biggie ...but Ive inadvertently run into the problem hunting elk one morning...
10-4 Poobs, I only own one 1-4 and it's sits on a spare AR-10 house gun
I need to go shoot a big Leopard.

Turned down to 1X it makes a great 'indoor' scope!
Yup, straight down the rail to the boom hole!
