My buddy bought a big black monstrosity chambered for .338 Impractical Lapua. Heretofore, he's been poking holes at the 100 yard range with Privi Partizan 250 grain ball ammo, just getting a feel for the thing. However, he wants to eventually get to a range with distances to 1000 yards, and possibly even poke a peck of porkers with it one day.

Would the 250 and 300 grain Bergers be the best bet to do both things with 1 bullet? Are there any other contenders?

I'm guessing H1000, Retumbo, and Ramshot Magnum would be the usual suspects for driving them, but lemme know if anything else might be the cat's [hindquarters] for such application.

Thanks,

FC
Sounds like fun. Hopefully it shoots better than the loud azzed monstrosity i saw at the range a couple weeks ago. 100 yards was probably the limit for that sob.
In my 2-rifle experience with handloading for the .338 Lapua, Magnum was most accurate with 250's and 300's. Bergers would work fine. The loads are listed in Gun Gack 1,

I shoot 300 grain SMK in mine powered by H-1000 lit with Federal 215M primers in Lapua brass.

Many thanks - I was just perusing that chapter again.

He’s got the 110BA. I suppose it’s a more attainable midlife crisis trifle than a corvette, or a new wife... 😆

Just about anything is less expensive than the second wife. First you would have to eliminate any traces of the predecessor complete interior re-do and then that wouldn't be enough so a new house would be in order and on and on.

Seems like just about any chunk of lead and cupro-nickle jacket would do in a hog. The 300 has the BC advantage and can completely come apart and still do major damage.
I would give the 300 Scenar a look see in addition to the Berger, hard to say but in some instances, but not all, the Scenar will hold together better.

Either way a good mid-life pursuit.
IIRC scenarshooter put scenars to use out of his 338 Lapua.
300gr Berger OTM . Been favoriting IMR 7977 lately.

The 300 grain SMK makes a complete mess with the vitals on Mule Deer, Whitetail Deer and Elk. It is a very accurate bullet that is very easy to load
my Weatherby likes the Nosler 300 gr match real well , and you can pick them up at times alot cheaper than the Bergers

my opinion is about any 300 gr. is pretty much going to kill anything walking around in the lower 48

I agree 100%
I run Rel 22 with the 250gr sierra MK at 2750fps " Mild load" and H1000 with the 300gr Berger OTM at 2800fps. Lapua brass and Remington 9 1/2 M's. This is in a Savage 110 magnum.
