Trying to find out if I have a model 10 or 29 shotgun. Has no model info on it. R k 8 on the left side of Barrell. Serial # 129822 with the letter U over top on the underside of the receiver. Appreciate any help I can get on this gun.
IIRC the Model 10 both loaded in and ejected out the bottom like an Ithaca Model 37. The shell lifting mechanism on the M10 was a hinged paddle while the M37 lifts with two metal fingers.

The early Model 11 automatic had a safety that functioned most like a Garand, but not identically.

Model 10s had a safety that you flicked off from inside the trigger guard like a Garand.
Some or all Model 29s had a push button (cross bolt) safety located behind the trigger guard.

Yes, the Model 11 has the safety in the trigger guard. Easy to tell because of the humpback Browning-like A5 receiver. Pictures should be mandatory with questions like this .
No hump back to it like the auto 5 has.
My Model 11 has a cross bolt safety in the rear of trigger guard.
Researching the serial #, it dates at 1929.
When did they change the safety?

You have a Model 10 and probably an early one because the "model 10" designation was not used until ~ 1911.
Thank you. Everyone for the help. It's a pretty cool old gun. Stock has some round jewels in a diamond type wooden inlay that someone put in it. And the barrel was cut and a polychoke added to it. Few cracks in the stock at the end of the receiver.

Sounds like a Model 10 to me also. I don't know when Remington began marking the receivers with a model number but the serial number seems high to be an early model. Due to the alterations, it is possible the gun was refinished at some point and much of the original marking were removed in the process. The paddle lifter wears easily and is not available as a separate part. I had to buy two other Model 10s to repair the paddle. This got to be expensive as one had to fit a "new" but worn part to the gun.
My first 12 ga was a trap model I bought at a garage sale for $50. It came with a folder of newspaper clippings and a trophy as the original owner was a noted local trapshooter of the early part of the last century. It was eventually relegated to "old timer" preserve hunts where we took out the old dogs and used old guns and shells. Unless health reasons dictated, no dog was younger than 10, guns were pre-1950, and shells were factory papers pre plastic shotcup. It was a great time.
Sounds like a good time. We have an old rifle doe hunt every year. I shoot a model 14 in either 30 or 32 Rem. Nothing like the classics.
