I found a decent 405 at a good price. But brass and/or ammo seems most difficult to find. Any thoughts on getting ammo or brass?

You might PM Kaywoodie, he may have a connection on loading supplies.

Bugger, When I bought my first 1895 .405, I bought a few boxes of Hornady ammo and shot some and used that empty brass for reloading. And then bought extra ammo and brass from anyone selling it when they discovered the 1895 .405 kicked a bit. smile

IMHO, the 1895 .405 is a great hunting rifle and it can be loaded down with 41 Mag pistol bullets or on up to 400 grain .411 Woodleigh bullets. Have fun with yours.
Liked mine so much that I bought a Simson .405 double rifle to keep it company.

Bugger, PM incoming.

Thanks byron. I did not buy the rifle because I couldn’t find reloading material. I’ve moved on.
If anyone is interested there’s a Ruger no. 1 on Gunsinternational ss with laminated stock in 405 for less than $1,300.

byron, I'm looking for 405 brass if you have a source.
Thanks.

Try 405wcf here at the fire. I just saw him at the Michigan get together.

Interesting news for .405 Junkies!

A friend of mine has just chronographed 400 grain Woodleigh loads at 2155 + fps . After he checks the pressures and finds them OK, he will try for higher velocities!

This puts our "old fashioned" Winchester M 1895 .405 rifles firmly up in the African Dangerous Game category! smile

Back in Jan I found LG Outoors had lots of Hornady loaded ammo. Bought a bunch, no brass or ammo anywhere else. Just looked , gone. Bertram basic is real expensive. 400 grain Woodleighs at 2155 in my 1895 makes my eyes water just thinking about it. Hoping to survive Dove season after last years shoulder surgery. I'd try that combo in my TC Encore in 405 first ,me thinks it would be good wild boar medicine, Lol.

I have a very nice blue/walnut Ruger Number 1 in .405. Sadly, I had my shoulder replaced last year and am getting rid of my bigger rifles and shotguns. My rifle has a Leupold M-8 4x on it and shoots very well. It has decent wood on it as well.

I also have about 120 rounds of factory ammo, a new unused set of Hornady dies, a bunch of bullets including Hornady and Woodleigh 300 gr., and 4 unopened 50-Rd. boxes of new Hornady .405 brass, plus about 25 or 30 once-fired brass.

I would prefer to sell the whole shebang at one fell swoop. Any idea what a fair price would be?

I too have a nice wood and blue No 1, and I'll tell ya, from the prices I see bandied about I don't think I would be embarassed to ask at least 1800+ for everything you have listed, and that may be low.

Thanks, Byron, I guess I will take an exact inventory and some pictures, and see what happens.

If your looking for 405 brass there was a person on Gun Broker who had about 8 boxes of new Hornady brass for sale. IIRC he was asking $65/box. Hornady also has bullets which you can find at Midway USA. I have #1's in 405 and 450/400 3 inch and use the same bullets in both rifles. Reloading componets for the 405 are available and it's a neat old cartridge. Don't give up on it.
