With powder being almost impossible to find locally and my supply of Accurate 2230 getting low I’ve been looking at other powders I have lying around that I can use in the 458 WM with 480/500 grain bullets. I have found load data for the 458 Lott using TAC powder. Anyone ever used or found any load data using TAC in the 458 WM? I’ve got a couple of pounds sitting around I’m not using.

Barnes reloading manual #4 has 450 grain and 500 grain loads listed. For 500 See below:

500 Barnes TSX FB TAC 62.5 1915

500 Barnes TSX FB TAC 67.0 2040

500 Barnes BND SLD TAC 67.0 2062

500 Barnes BND SLD TAC 72.5 2194

Tac shot VERY well with 400 grain loads in my Winchester 1895 .405. Meters very accurately , allowing precise loads.

Very similar to H335 if you compare them side by side. Both are ball powders. Hornady's manual reports H335 to be best overall for both the Lott and .458 Win. I've used lots of H335 with great success in both .45-70s and .458 Win Mag with bullets from 450 to 500grs in conjuction with WLRM primers. I haven't yet used TAC simply because 1)I don't know if it's available here, and 2) It appears to be nearly identical to H335 in results for the .458 Win.

Must be AA-2230 is good in.223 AR rifles, eh ? Hard to find lately.
Glad I bought by the 8# jug.
I differ from Bob only in using H335 in my .223 instead of .458.
I just never saw the need for TAC when I had H335.
Funny how all the powders good in the .223 are also good in the .458 WM. cool

Bugger, I have added the COLs and some notes on powder compression:

TAC looks really good, best powder in the Barnes #4 manual for MV in the SAAMI .458 WM.
With #4 Barnes started showing the "Load Density (%)" , i.e. Loading Ratio (%) or net filling without use of drop tube, on their maximum loads,
and many of the older loads (pre-TSX) were reduced from what they had been in Barnes #3 where LR % had previously not been shown.
TAC was new for #4 listings, and it was the new velocity champ but was not judged the accuracy champ.

A 100% fill of TAC with any 500-grain bullet you like in a SAAMI .458 WM might be outstanding.
Please try it and let us know, in case we run out of AA-2230, AA-2460 and H4895, Varget and Benchmark ain't bad either.
