I appreciate any information you guys can give me on this rifle & scope package. It belongs to a good friend who's getting up in age and there's no chance of him using it for what it is intended. An important thing to note is that the floor plate is not functional now as the store he bought it new from talked him into having the trigger guard drilled and pinned so the floor plate wouldn't open upon recoil. I pulled the TG and saw the work; to my highly unskilled eye it looks well done and an easy fix to drive the roll pin out and make the floor plate fully functional. Like it or not, it's done.

It is a New Haven, CT made Classic Super Express 458 Winchester Mag, UNFIRED. I'd prefer to get a value with the scope and mounts included but separate pricing is fine.

The last two sold on Gunbroker for $1500 each, one with and one without scope. Usually better to sell rifle and scope separate.

That gloss Leupold will sell in a hot second. Definitely sell it separately.

Nice rifle.

Blue Book value is $1525 for 100%
$1325 for 98%
New for 1993.
Discontinued 1998.
The last MSR in 1998 was $865
A "Fine Arms" dealer in NC is asking $3995 for one as new in box:

Remove the scope from the rings and sell it separately for sure.
You never get what the scope is worth when you leave it on the rifle.
Anybody could use a Leupold 1.5-5x20mm VX-3 for $200,
but it won't add that to rifle sale.

They don't come open if they are properly done to begin with so while good to mention it's a non-issue except for having changed it from true NIB condition. Nice looking rifle. Talk with the 458+ group on the thread of the same name in this forum. Someone there may want it. Otherwise, up it should go on GB. I'd try to sell them together first but yes, that scope will not last if sold separately and may even carry the whole sale for the right person. Good luck. Nice looking bit of kit, that.

Thanks all for the help. Is the Blue Book even relevant these days in gun values? $200 for the scope?

For many of us who are not desperate to acquire another gun,
the Blue Book is still a good guide.
The current edition addresses the covid and cultural crises and ammo shortages in the introductory material, multiple essays.

Of course you can get more for the scope than $200 if sold separately.

The Pre-'64 Winchester M70 Super Grade African at "100%" is still only $8,000 according to the Blue Book.
The right gunnut or riflecrank might pay $4,000 for a beater-shooter "60%" specimen of that.
1,226 of those were made from 1956 to 1963.
Blue Book comments on that African:
"Normal attrition and collectors owning more than one contribute to extreme rarity.
Retains considerable "shooter" value in lesser external conditions.
Watch for cracked and/or repaired stocks."
Blue Book sounds kind of relevant there.

"Not to hijack..." Famous words as subtly diverting, perhaps 'perverting' a Thread...

I'd simply like to inquire whether the same rifle in 416 Remington would be of similar value, both without aftermarket accoutrements . It does seem to me in that the 416 has never achieved anything near the 458 popularity. But inversely sometimes "less common" compliments "collectability".

Question asked!
Thanks!

The same rifle in .375H&H (minus the pinned floor plate) with the exact same scope was priced at $1895 at the LGS yesterday. They’re known for their high prices but that’s what they were asking anyway.

Nice rifle but the damn thing weighed as much as a recoiless anti-tank rifle. 😂

To me, the .458 WinMag would be worth more.
But that "Model 70 Classic Sporter Super Express Mag."
.458 WinMag was made from 1993-1998.
.416 RemMag was made from 1994-1998, and might be a rarer chambering, thus more scarce.
Some collectors/shooters might pay more for it.

Slightly related:
The Big 5 edition rifles from the Winchester Custom Shop were made in sets of 125 of each chambering,
starting with .375 H&H in year 2000:
I--Lion--.375 H&H--2000--$1799.99
II--Elephant--.458 WinMag--2001--$1899.99
III--Leopard--.338 WinMag--2002--$2099.99
IV--Rhino--.470 Capstick--2003--$????.??
V--Cape Buffalo--.416--2004--$2199.99

Those were the price tags on the original boxes of set #98 of 125, in a photo of the set
which was being offered for sale, as a set, for considerably more dollars.
.470 Capstick price was obscured.

Slightly related:
Those .470 Capstick barrels were reportedly over-sized.
A buddy owned one and his barrel keyholed with the standard .470 NE bullets.
He said there was a rough spot in the rifling too.
Caveat emptor.
Some people actually bought those rifles for shootin' instead of just lookin' at fondly.
Shooters usually just bought one of the set after the dealer that got them each year
gave up on getting the same buyer to return for a yearly purchase.
