What is your preferred cartridge for Cape Buffalo and why

if i ways going for cape buffalo i would take my winchester 458 mag load it with 480gr Woodleighs and never lookback

It would be a cartridge/load/rifle I could practice with a lot. I found my 416 Rigby Ruger with 400 grain solids to give me headaches and I could not practice at all with it.

My 1895 .405 WCF with either 360 grain NF or 400 grain Weldcore. Worked well on water buff and Cape buff and should work again.

Or maybe my Simson Suhl .405 WCF:

I had one of those and they kick way more than they should and that was a 400 grain at 2370 FPS. I have a Whitworth in 416 Rem and a 400 grain at 2454 FPS has lest felt recoil and the rifle is lighter. Which means the stock was a good fit for me in the big Ruger

If I buy another Ruger in anything that has a belt on it, I’ll plan on re-stocking it (or a cartridge such as the 375 Ruger). My 7mm RM tanger is 100% better after it was re-stocked. I just bought a 280 in a #1, I hope it’s kind to me.

That Simson Suhl curls my toes. Damn! Who did the conversion and stock work please?

sidepass,
This and another of my DRs was done by Robert (Bob) Hynden of Iowa. Here is the other one, a Beretta 45-70 that was his deer rifle before his demise a couple of years ago.

I bought this one from his estate and am having it modified to handle the 45-90 cartridge that I shoot in my 1886 45-90. Bob loved nice wood and used good strong shotgun actions for his conversion to big bore rifles.

Thank you for your compliment on the Simson Suhl .405 DR. It also shoots well.

My favorite is 404 Jeffery. I’ve taken Cape Buffalo with 404 Jeffery, 458 Lott & 375 H&H. They all seemed to work just fine. I just really like the 404 Jeffery, and the history attached to it, and my 8.5 lb. Dakota Safari in 404J.

It would have to be a standard SAAMI .458 WinMag or the souped-up loading of the rifle with same chamber, the .458 WM+.
