You might want to check out accuratereloading.com and look under the "medium bore" sections too. There's a lot of 9.3 fans there too. The rifle you mention sounds like a beauty.

When did a 9.3 become a Big Bore?

I missed one on AR about 6 months ago. I think it went for $600-$650. DAMN!!!

Yep.

It is bigger than a 35 Whelen and is used with aplomb for Ele and Cape buff... sounds like a big bore to me.

As to the OP inquiry, to begin with WELCOME to 24hourcampfire! And it sounds like you have a REALLY excellent big bore rifle there. You might want to look or inquire here in the big game reloading forum but if it were my rife I would simply load some 250 or 286gr Barnes triple shocks ahead of about any medium burning rate powder you have available and call it good.

Good luck and good hunting.
Loading the 9.3x62 is pretty cut and dried..I have tried about everything in that caliber and RL-15 is the best for accuracy and for velocity in all of them I have loaded for over the years.

I load the 250 Barnes X, GS Customs, or the Swift bullet with 60 grs. of H414 on ocassion and that is the sole exception these days..

The 286 Nosler with 58 grs. of RL-15 and a 210 primer for 2523 FPS..the 300 gr. swift with 56 grs. of RL-15 for 2450 FPS, the 320 gr. Woodleigh with 56.5 grs. of RL-15 for 2412 FPS..

Cut these loads a couple of grs. and work up.

All these loads chronographed in my 9.3x62 Brno mod. 21 with a 26 inch Lothar Walthar barrel.

Oh, that made the bore larger? The 303 British was the most used caliber by the early settlers and has probalby taken more Cape Buffalo than any other caliber. Is it a big bore as well? How about the 338's???

Get off of this guy's case. He's new on the forum, comes from a firearms restrictive country, and wants some info on the 9.3 X 62. Rather than lend him some info, you want to piss and moan about his verbiage?

I have hunted extensively with the 9.3 X 62 in Africa, and do own and shoot a .450/400 NE 3", and a .450 #2. I might consider only the later two "Big Bore", but I won't beat this guy with sarcasm over it.

Atkinson has used the 9.3 a bunch too, as has Mule Deer. They love R15. I use H414 with Barnes TSX 250 just because the ball powder meters so nicely and has worked like magic in both 9.3 X 62 Mausers I own.

The 9.3 is not a finicky cartridge to load for, and performs in the field in excess of what you expect from its paper ballistics.

I love my M46 Hasgvarna in 9.3x62 it is flawless, it can be called a med. bore or a big bore. It doesn't matter, its all you need to kill whatever with it, great cartridge! Nice to have some new people to this site. There are some people here who always have to show they are so much more of an expert about what someone may say! Makes them feel more important to themselves. Sounds like a gun anyone would want to own, keep on posting and ignore those kind of people!

...Not stirring the pot too much, but the definition of "big bore" has changed with firearm development. Currently, Boddington (not the only opinion but widely read) defines a big bore as .45 and above. From what I've read though, a 12 bore was the 375 H&H of it's day - a very useful medium rifle. Seems like the 40's, with the 416's leading the way, might be tomorrows big bores?
qwerty2008,

Congratulations on the new rifle. In America any cartridge of greater bore diameter than a .338 Winchester Magnum is effectively a big bore.

Strictly speaking in African hunting a thirty calibre and below are small bores. Up to fourty calibre is a medium bore. Above that are large bore cartridges.

Warning: someone here will want to argue over this just for the sake of arguing. Good luck with the new gun!
I guess the 9.3x62 became a "big bore" with me after killing a lot of Cape Buffalo with it..A 320 gr. bullet at 2500 FPS from a 26 inch barrel and a big dose of RL-15 hurts'em! smile smile

The 375 is a "real big bore" to me and anything bigger from a 416 up is a "humdinger" and even the .375 H&H with 350 gr. Woodleighs qualifies in the humdinger catagory smile It's all in the termaknowledgy and really has no real substance other than making interesting campfire conversation..:) Anything bigger than a 416 or 404 is termed a "kicking SOB" in my books! smile

Hatari, I like H414 too, especially with light bullets int he 9.3x62.
