I recently picked up a 458 Winchester magnum (ruger M77 Mark I tang safety)and picked up some barnes 350gr tsx bullets for it. I looked through a few manuals am leaning towards H4198 or maybe even H Benchmark (I also have both of those on hand). Anyone have any min, max loads, and oal’s to get me in the ballpark? This will be my first time loading for a big bore rifle. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Drop about 3 grains and work up to these velocities taken in a 22 inch Model 70 barrel.

350gn Barnes TSX Bullet
75gn H 4198 = 2582fps with an OAL of 3.252"
80gn Varget = 2337fps with an OAL of 3.335"
78gn AA2230 = 2424fps with an OAL of 3.225"
76gn H322 = 2434fos with an OAL of 3.335" (Best group of .765")

A .458 Winchester is a great incinerator to use up spare powder on your shelf and just about anything from Rel 7 through the burning rates to about H4320 will work satisfactorily. Just remember that your shooting determines the maximum load for you, not the top velocity in a book, because if you are under Max velocity by even 100fps or more and you can shoot it well, that will still do all you ask of this bullet weight. And, there are a very small handful of animals in a mans life that this bullet would not be ideal for.

Thanks John I appreciate it. In my “non” Barnes manuals I was showing a max of 72grn with H4198 in which I thought I would learn to be anemic coming from the HODGDON manual.

I’d have to look at my load book but I want to say I used 72gr of H4198 in my old tang safety. I’m certain it was H4198 and I know I was getting 2550fps but I’m uncertain on the exact charge. The 350 Speer MagTip is a good bullet for the 458 too.

I have some of the gummy bear Hornadys in 325. I wondered what they would do in my smaller 458 American. But the 350 X bullets would be more universal on most American game. I would like to kill a few pigs with the American, then chamber to the Win Mag and do the same. Get a feel for both calibers. Packy

You can still re-chamber to .458 and use the American loads as well but they will shoot to a different point. If you do one and then the other as you suggest, they are still not interchangeable to point of aim.

Boy it sounds like I am in need of a 458 Win., only because I have tens of pounds of powder I can almost give away or "incinerate' in a 458W.

I used a lot of 350 grain TSXs in the .458 culling water buffalo. The goal was to try to get recoil down to .375 level and that was achieved. I used H4198 and seated the bullets in the second groove. 2600 fps plus; and I only stopped there because the POI was the same as the heavier bullets..
