FWIW:
Apparently this is one of the rarer configs

SAKO L61R .458 WM, Sporter Finnbear, SN 58xxx, 1984, barreled action, complete, unopened hang tag still attached. No stock. Purchased new, by the current owner, in 1984.

debates are to leave it alone, second hand stock it, or have a custom (laminate?) made and fitted?

input on which and who/what appreciated.

hard to even figure a good value on it as it is vs stocking/ shooting it.....for insurance. This gun will never most likely leave the family. Grandfather wants it to be an heirloom.

Thank you.

If you cannot locate a factory stock I would order a Boyds in English walnut. They come with dual crossbolts. Then I would reshape and finish it. Order it with a 1" decelerator pad, ask if they have red.
If you are happy with it send it out to be checkered in a pattern of your choice.

Actually, it may be a Boyd’s decision, but I’ve also been looking at $2-$3k customs from AI, etc...that have reenforced chassis for the big boomers, since these Sakos were prone to eat normal stocks, apparently. Thanks

Thinking you may be missing a digit in the S/N. I have an AV DeLuxe in 375 from the same era with a 579xxx serial.
If they intend to shoot it they should check for the presence of a bolt guide cross pin. In the pic below it's the small pin immediately aft of the blue bolt collar.
Without the pin recoil will eventually break the leaf spring and tie up the action. Don't ask how I know.

Sako incorporated it onto later production when they realized some cartridges would break the leaf spring in recoil.
I sent my bolt to Accuflite Arms in PA to get the pin installed. I wouldn't trust anything with more than about 30-06 level recoil without the pin.

What did it cost to have Accuflite Arms install a pin?

There's a guy who has older Sako stocks for sale. PM me and I'll get his info.
