Should l be concerned reloading standard bullets into the shorter Hornady 45/70 brass?

Will it burn out the throat of the 1895 marlin?

Pretty evident. Hornady 45//70 brass is short. In fact any hornady brass loaded with gummy tips are. I cull them out. Pain to change crimping did just for them ymmv

I dont know what a gummy tip is. I am simply asking what is up with Hornady 45/70 brass. How long is short? Only certain factory loads are short and other brass is longer?

Back to the OP, who can answer if they dont know the case lengths of the question? At first blush it has the ring or a non issue for damage to the gun. Tiny variations maybe an inconvenient. Again, I am curious as a 45/70 shooter what is going on (exactly what) with Hornady ammo.

Pretty simple really. factory loaded Hornady 45-70 ammo with Flex tip bullets uses shorter cases, about .1 inch short. They needed to do that to keep the COAL short enough to work in Marlin 1895 rifles as well as Win and clones of the 86. Regular 458 flatnose bullets don't cause these problems. So if you want 45-70 cases Hornady brand for bp loading you buy them in 50 ct packs as unprimed brass. They are 2.1". Problems? no more than shooting any other short shell in a long chamber, bullet lube, powder residue and other crud built up at the end of a short cases preventing the chambering of the right ones or at a minimum the easy extraction of the long ones. Common with shorts in a LR 22 chamber ,38's in a 357 chamber especially loaded with cast grease groove bullets or any other (44 Spcl/ 44Mag). If a guy used the short Hornady cases and grease groove cast bullets I think you would have a big problem in damn short order, but if you want the short case for reloading smokeless and Flex tips that is the way to go.MB

No, wont hurt a thing, a man simply isn't going to fire a 45-70 3 to 5K times as some do with varmint/target type rifle and cartridges, myself, I'd just pitch the short brass, go find/order some new R-P, W-W or Starline brass and carry on.

The hornady leverevelution loads use the pointed soft tip bullet and to fit the lever guns the oal needs to be shorter .
If I have hummus tip bullets I use the hornady brass but normally just cull it out.
It is possible I suppose that the shorter brass could lead to throat erosion but I won't live long enough to worry about it.

Not at all. I really did not know. I will watch out for this.

In my Marlins I used the shorter brass for the pointed Hornady 250gr monoflex bullets but it also was perfect for the Speer 350 flatnose that have the crimp groove a little further down the bullet.
All other loads got standard length brass and they both worked fine.
I did have to raise or lower the die to crimp the longer or shorter brass so I left a spacer in the die box just like a 38special/357mag die set.
