Hot dogs, wieners, what ever you call them, what's best?
I hope Travis don't chime in.

yeah and hopefully, he ain't figured out the whole new pic thing yet....especially, with franks and beans!!
I prefer plain ole Oscar Meyer Classics for home made chilli cheese dogs.
But to the question....
Johnsonville brats!
Smiths, all beef, smoked, natural casing.
Zweigles are pretty good, but regional - made in Rochester NY

Hey! Lookee here. BYC is back in town!
Costco sells a good hotdog. Pretty hard to beat that meat.
Hands down the winner
I miss Nick Tahoe's garbage plates.
You all know of course that when it says all beef, that can include everything form the snout to the tip of the tail.
Nathans or Costco both are good
I am more than good with Costco's dogs.
Nathans or Costco both are good
Agreed.
If you require old school, any good meat market can provide.
Travis

All he talks about is his COCK.
Dave
Hills old fashioned frankfurter outta Pendleton Oregon
Hebrew National when you can get them fresh from the butcher/deli not packaged.
I just by Hebrew National Kosher dogs
I like Claus' German Meat Market franks.
Claus has a master's degree in sausage making, which the Germans are actually sausage-crazy enough to have a program for.

Yup
Nathan's are the best I can get locally.
I'd kill for a sausage shop around here. I miss the smell of the pork store on main street when I was a kid.
Won't buy commercial (big name), love a good deer sausage as a dog !
Old school meat store (4 hours away) makes great sausage, smokies, brats etc.
North country meats =
http://www.northcountrymeats.com/products.html* They will also make sausage from, your own, wild game !
Well, there's a place near Culpeper VA that makes a real good all bison meat hot dog, but they're up to $14/lb now and I'd rather buy ribeyes at that price!
My wife is from Rhode Island and grew up with
http://www.saugys.com/ .and thinks there's no substitute.
I have to admit they're a darn good a combo of beef and pork and a nice snappy casing. We often buy a case when we're up there. I do think the Wegmans German style hot dogs are a pretty good substitute though.
You guys have me wanting a hot dog with mustard, chili***, and diced purple onions.
*** Not northern Greekified hot dog sauce, not Cincinnati "chili" with cinnamon and whatever else.
Mustard is great, as long as it is either brown &/or whole grain !!
Yellow mustard is for small children, whose taste buds haven't developed.
Nobody over five years of age should be putting ketchup on a hot dog.
since I am the person that defines the terms in my life. I ignore stupid comments regarding condiments on MY hotdogs. lol
Standards man! Ketchup on a hotdog? What's next? Sodom and Gomorrah redux? Even worse, ice in sipping whisky? It's the fall of civilization I tell you.

mmmmmmm.....
Washed down with a bud light too!
(ducking)

So, where does krout enter into the lore of franks? I'll follow the leading question line Sam called me a master of. I am not called anything good all that often.
Goes well with German sausage & mustard (brown) !
Assuming, of course, you mean sauerkraut, "kraut" & not the German soldier version ?
Chili slaw dog.
Quite possibly the peak of culinary creation............
So let's take this thread to the next level. What's the best way to cook a dog? "Frankly" I prefer grilled with a slight char!!
Not real big on anything that results in a soggy bun as in boiled with dog water drenching the bun. At Costco I bodly ask them to wrap the dog separate from the bun but that's because I don't eat them until 10 minutes or so up the road.
AND buns will likely take this to a whole new level of discussion. I found Nathans foot long Dogs last week but NO foot long buns. WTH??
And what's with the top split buns? I just don't know!!
Richard forgive me for taking your thread to BIG Dog status!!
Thank you David. So much good food, so little time, such a big belly! Me that is. How did that checkup go?
If the dog is hot the water will dry off of it in a few seconds. Char doesn't belong on a dog.
Enough color to know it was next to the heat. not charred, but grate marks for sure.
Steamed or simmered, just like they're served in Bavarian beer halls.
Grilled until the skin splits - but you need a dog with a casing
Chili slaw dog.

Held in an almost cult like status here in West Virginia.

Richard one test led to more tests (yet to be done) which seems to be the way these things always work out. ::))
Thanks for asking. Hope all is well.
Going to try some of those white hots this weekend They look great!! Assuming they're made of veal and pork?

Agreed

Wer're lucky in Omaha, as there are a lot of people from central Europe who came to work in the meat packing industry between 1870 and 1940, some of whom established meat markets to service the different ethnic neighborhoods, Czech/German/Polish, and some of those family run meat markets are still making sausages 6 days a week. Since we live in the western 'burbs, our local meat market is Stoysich's at 132nd & Center. They sell over 50 different varieties of wurst, including several different hotdogs and brats. I like the cooked German Brats, the all-beef weiners, and, best of all, the fresh veal bockwurst. Whenever we have guest passing through from out of town and who like German food, we order ahead for a selection of fresh sausages to steam in beer and then finish on the grill.
www.stoysich.comA different branch of the same family runs a separate meat market with equally good sausages, I just don't get there very often as it is outside my usual haunts, but I try to stop by to buy eastern/central European packaged/canned goods when I have to visit UPS to ship a long gun.

Party pooper.
Maybe some dogs simmered in Wild Turkey ?
Ya, pork & bourbon sauce works !
260, Here I ask about the best franks, and you tell me about the wurst!!
. (I know, sometimes I'm ashamed myself)

Well, I did manage to work FRANK in via Frank Stoysich, but that was either the best or the wurst that I could do.
260, all those German meats do sound mighty fine.
And what's with the top split buns? I just don't know!!l
Their only purpose is for Lobster rolls but that's a damn good reason!
OMG that looks sooooo good!!!!!!
I'm coming up there!!

Anytime buddy. Heading out to the camp this weekend and heck, might do it again!

We're going to eat some Stoysich German brats and knockwurst for dinner tonight!
I'm no hotdog connoisseur, and mainly grill them just for the kids. Been buying the Ball Park all Beef uncured hotdogs lately. Everyone seems to love me them. I'm more of a smoked deer sausage man myself.
A friend informed me the kids at a birthday pool party asked for grilled hot dogs, and to make it even worse one of them used mayo and ketchup. Civilization is coming to an end I tell you.
I'm not a fan of the big national brands and prefer natural casing regional brands. Around here that means preferably Kayem Old Tyme Franks or if those are not available, Sabrett's or Nathan's. When I get up to the North Country of NY, I look for Glazier red hot dogs, which I have also ordered online and had shipped to me.
I might have to get on a plane just to visit this place.
