Papa Stavros Gyro Fries. Wife's chastising me because I added ketchup and tabasco. I said at least it isn't windex.
You big city folks sure have access to the damnedest things.
Fortunately I'm 15min from open country.
Lamb and beef steak under all that BTW.
problem with that is you can only get it the one day a week that Greeks work.
problem with that is it's hard to get it fresh because they only make it the one day a week that Greeks work.
Ha!
Not this family, crazy workaholics They run two food trucks, catering service and a restaurant. And good luck finding any Mexicans working for them.
I would eat the hell out of that.
Miss that stuff. Gyro with extra feta, tziki sauce, black olives and hit it with some Tabasco. Cayenne pepper dust on the friesđź‘Ť
Did you get some baklava for dessert??
Jim I have no doubt.
No Baklava for me Beansy but the wife got some.
She also had Falafel with pickled beets and tzatziki sauce.
Ill beat 284 to it.
You all eat chit that I can't even id.
Pretty sure I need to drive a hundred miles to find falafel.
And I'm only guessing I could get it in Pittsburgh.
But, it's not Italian, Irish, German, or Polish, so Pittsburgh may not have it.
Greek guy showed up here awhile back.
Ho hum.
Yawn.
Can't say I've ever sampled any Greek foods.
Best I ever had was at a place in Denver. I've had Greek food all over the country but this place beat them all. Was working there for about a week and ate there almost every day. My favorite is the fried smelts. Nothing finer than a big pile of golden crisp smells with tziki sauce and cold beer to wash em down.
Since moving here I was thrilled to find gyro's once more. But something was not as I remembered.
When back in Illinois I had to see if it was imagination and the passing of time, or if a true Greek restaurant held something that others didn't.
My suspicions were confirmed. Nothing like a greek run, greek shop.

Ho hum.
Yawn.
Well if I grew up eating squirrel and possum spaghetti, I'd probably think same.

You have the recipe for this possum spaghetti and squirrel dumplings?
I'm not much of a cook but I'm a damn good eater there 79.
Spent a good bit of my life wearin' a bib in greek joints all over Brooklyn, South Jersey and Philly before retiring .
Oh my !!! Sooooo damn good.

I was probably 50 before I had a Gyro, I've had many since. What a doggone treat a well made one is!
Judging from the Bourdain/Zimmern shows, I think I could be quite food happy in Geece.
"I'd have to drive a hundred miles to find falafel"
Just for grins, I googled "falafel in Lexington Ky." I got fooled, five Greek establishments there. I guess the next time I'm in the big city I should pass on my usual tall boy Bud & 6 White Castles for the trip home & try some Greek instead.

Funny you should mention a "doggone treat". Several years ago I had my first Gyro Sandwich. I thought it to be very good table fare but when I offered the end piece to my black lab, he turned up his nose and moved over to the other side of the room to lie down. Must have reminded him of a "bad date".
eternal question: gear-o or hero
close sse. It's 'ear-o'.
I had a Greek friend in college. She would always go nuts when I'd talk about leaving the OSU campus bars and grabbing a couple of "gy-ros' with a hard 'g' sound. For her, I think it was worse than the 'C' word.
Yes, yer rros is what I've been told more than once.
Now........ don't hang me from the gallows pole, but Arby's has a Gyro with 3 choices of meat.. The Greek meat one might pass if it had more onions & sauce.
Hey.... it beats a blank.
Their Reuben ain't half bad.

Lived in Nebraska too long.
Year-O around here, and they make some damned fine ones. About the only thing that will get me to the mall anymore.

Havent been to an Arbys since the 90's not saying its not good though
Bob the Burger guy in the commercials is funny.
pretty sure at arby's it's called a gear-o
I have an excellent Greek restaurant five minutes from my office. It's not something I crave weekly, but probably eat it 1-2 times a month. I could put their Tzatziki sauce on Corn Flakes! It's owned by a Greek couple in their 60's that close the restaurant every Fall for one month so they can go back to Greece. Due to them being close to retirement age I"m afraid one of these days they may not come back.

Check 'em for cash.

when available i use it for fries instead of ketchup
I’ll be hitting the Mad Greek on my Vegas trip in a couple of weeks.
If you stand still long enough the Greeks will stuff you with Feta cheese, like they do everything else.
Found that out a few years back when in Greece. They love Feta.

Id save my Greek Fix for Vegas. Ok that reads funny.
I was disappointed last time I was there a few years back. Wasn't like I remembered it in the 80's and 90's. More of a Greek Dennys now. Still decent food though for a midnight snack fix or hang over breakfast slumming out of a Vegas weekend.
Love a good gyro and it's not really that hard to make - I've used
Alton Brown's Gyro recipe and it's turned out really well using the Weber gas grill with a rotisserie. Maybe not Greek Restaurant good but good enough.
Since it's such a paste when you form the mass we call it "Lamb spam" and it really helps to make the meat mixture the night before to get it compacted. The rotisserie I have is one of those with little clamps so it doesn't go through the meat and his cooking times are a little short because you don't get the heat transfer through the central skewer.
Oh, I fondly remember nights/mornings, long ago, leaving the bar/club !
& the garlic sauce !!!
No fond memories of the next morning.
Truthfully, it was normally next morning !!!
What the hell kind of yellow cheese is on that - that ain’t Greek.....maybe Greek American.

It’s not what Triple D made it out to be. Good hangover grub for the ride home is about right.

Not sure what tripleD is but yes its probably always been the same but my decades of memory might have been warped by time.
Looks great
I have Greek first generation friend that runs this restaurant in Baltimore with his family. Would not believe the screaming and fights among family members working in the kitchen.
Fantastic food if you are in Baltimore area. I think some of best in mid Atlantic states

Nice looking menu - not a great section of Baltimore but likely worth it.
A valid point.
There are places that we will go in daylight. Maybe a lunch visit is in order.

Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives. Guy visited it on one of his episodes.
Ohhhhhhhhhh that guy. Duh!
Baltimore is missing only one thing.
Baltimore is missing only one thing.
Yeah, me headed over to Fells Point. Been far too long
I was thinking more along the lines of a big razor wire fence around the whole thing.
M 60s at every corner ???
But of course.
Go over to Fells Point then to the perimeter .
Buck a belt.
